I fail to understand why so many choose to use the location in hiding option. Am I the only once that does? Are quilters afraid that someone might find them? I would embrace finding new quilting friends.

I understand the city being hidden but I do show my state. :)

I know I have been wondering the same thing. When I read a post about weather, etc. and look to see where they are from and get the 'in hiding' I don't have any idea where the weather is at. I don't read a lot of those 'in hiding' posts.

mzmama 06-07-2011 06:27 AM

I can only guess that they don't know how to put it in or how to change it. Do they think we are going to come knock on their doors? I think I would love to have one of you guys come quilt with me and have tea or coffee.

DebraK 06-07-2011 06:47 AM

Maybe they just don't care. That's perfectly okay with me. I didn't change mine for a long time until people started pestering me about it.

Part of my concern in pinpointing my exact location - this board is available to everyone not just board members, and I work hard at protecting my personal information. I want to know who I reveal it to, for what purpose. Not that I'm concerned about board members, just the rest of the world.

There are loads of reasons for "in hiding" or funny location like Bikini Bottom, at my machine, in the sun, etc.

One reason is secret angel swaps. Participants don't want to give themselves away with the postmark being matched up to location, some users don't know how to update it in their user profile or never realized there was a spot for it when they first registered, some net users just prefer total Anonymity, there could be personal reasons, like an ex who has turned stalker or for all you know we may have members in the Witness protection program!! OK that last one was just a tad facetious. There have been many topics on the subject and it all boils down to a participants own preference. If you are that curious or a post is about weather for fires or whatever just ask where they are talking about or send a PM.

I guess I never paid attention to where they are from.

Rebecca VLQ 06-07-2011 07:44 AM

I see it sometimes, but the bulk of what I read here doesn't really matter where they're from!

BINGO!!! That's my reason, too. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to protect yourself.

People have asked me where I'm from and I send them a PM explaining why I don't want that info out there for anyone on the world-wide-web to see.

Great question, I hope people are helping you to understand why we don't put our locations.

This question has been asked so many times, I don't understand why some have a problem with others wanting to be on the safe side. I think I would be safe to assume most all on here are decent and honest but it only takes one rotten person to stumble on here. I've already had a horrible situation happen to me (not from this site) and do NOT want a repeat here. I'm sorry if my "in hiding" status hurts anyone, but not playing it safe can hurt a lot more.

You're not hurting anyone, Willa. I think the phrase "in hiding" is an unfortunate one for the board to use a default, but I imagine no matter what phrase is used, someone could find something wrong with it. Such is human nature ;-)

LOL I just noticed that mine says this.

wanda lou 06-07-2011 02:22 PM

protection, you just never know.

amma 06-08-2011 12:33 PM

It is wonderful and okay if you want to list your location and wonderful and okay if you don't. It is soley up to what you as an individual are comfortable disclosing :D:D:D

So if any of us feel uncomfortable publicly posting our location by other means, we may not be comfortable about posting it here either

We are close to 30,000 members now... and when doing a internet searches, hits to our quilting board frequently come up... that is how many found our board to begin with.

So it is not just members who read our locations, but anyone on the net too who follow links to us
There is a LOT of traffic in/out of here... and not all of them are quilters. Many can end up here due to off topics like in General Chit Chat.

Currently this is how many topics that are on the board, and each topic can lead someone here when they do an internet search pertaining to the topic/title :D:D:D

Main 39905
Pictures 30709
BOM 523
Introduce Yourself 8377
GCC 14689
Tutorials 405
Links 9460
Offline 1024
Buy/Sell/Trade 8499
Swaps 298
Offers/Donations 742
Recipes 2126
PDA 706

This is 117,463 topics that could lead anyone to here.... and even some of the titles to quilting topics are vague enough that a non quilter could end up here. How about all of the Harbor Freight titles in Main? Or the ones titled "Looking for machine parts," what kind of machine? sewing...metal machining?

AND as previously mentioned, some of us are/have been in secret swaps too and our locations were not supposed to be disclosed. :D:D:D

I agree, makes it sound like they deliberately are not revealing their location, when for many members it may not be deliberate.
