I've only been on the board since June and noticed some threads are blocked from replies. Why?

The ones that I have seen blocked are not offensive. Just wondering.

Rebecca VLQ 10-08-2010 02:36 PM

Variety of reasons: could be a dead-horse topic, could be that it starts getting a little too intense for the fun nature of the board, could be someone's forgetting their manners. It's up to the powers that be. They keep on top of it to keep the board safe and sane...

:D

I suspect that admin can read between the lines and locks them before they become 'offensive'.

kathome 10-08-2010 02:39 PM

I agree that it needs to be monitored but just wondered because the last one that I noticed was locked was about copyright laws and I thought that I could shed some light, only to see that it was locked.

Darlene 10-08-2010 02:44 PM

Sometimes they lock them to keep the posts at the minimum. Other times they are informational and they don't want any more postings.

I think it's been beaten to death...if you do a search it's been talked about multiple times.

Patrice is a mod, she locked it (I think) but not without first addressing the original question about copywright...

the board should be a place we gather to share information, friendship, encouragement and all things positive.

a friendly, informative and spirited debate can be a great deal of fun. it's an opportunity to see things from other points of view and, perhaps, to learn something. we should laugh and learn our way through.

poisonous arguments; venting; steaming; "screaming"; and spiraling anger are altogether different. whine with no cheese is a drag. and, really, somebody should give that poor dead horse a break. he's been through enough.

when the top pops off the Enough-Already-O-Nometer, it's time to lock a topic.

when the EAON melts, it's time to delete altogether.

soooooooooo ... as this conversation continues ... if it must ... please keep all of that in mind.

hint ... hint ... hint .... hint. ;-)

Yes if the horse gets beaten to death how will we be able to gallop past the quilt to tell if the mistake is too visable?

Rebecca VLQ 10-08-2010 03:25 PM

Hey, did you know that Mr. Ed was not a horse at all, but a zebra? But "back in the day" film did not pick up on the differences in hairs on the coat....

(the point being that Mr. Ed would be a dead horse, except he wasn't a horse at all....he was a zebra. So, we could be beating a dead zebra right now...)

BACK TO THE FUN STUFF! ;)

A horse is of course of course a horse and no one can talk to a horse of course, unless of course that talking horse is the famous mr Ed. And he was a Zebra. They better change the song. ROFL

C.Cal Quilt Girl 10-09-2010 06:45 AM

What do you mean Ed was not a horse ??? LOL Am I often the last to know these things, Geez I should be offended, but I'm not.
Guess I'll go make Baby blankets for Linus Catch ya later :) Have a great day!!

amandasgramma 10-09-2010 06:59 AM

I learned that some are closed because of posts that we DON'T see.....some are stopped before we can see them that may be offensive. So, even though the thread LOOKS okay, what's been sent in may not be what we want to see.

If you want freedom of speech in the craft world, you can find it elsewhere. Knitter's Review has a nice off-topic "enter at your own risk" forum.

Or, start your own. Every place is owned and/or operated by someone and they make the rules. I've admin'd two dominant boards. One was all about freedom to do anything except break the (U.S) law. The other was tea and crumpets. While the heaviness of the hand depends on the boss lady, users are free to land on the locale of their choice.

Personally, I think this site is over monitored. I belong to another discussion board which is very open to all opinions and I thin the only time a post is deleted is when someone advertises without permission or when someone is a scammer of some sort. Sometimes the discussions get pretty spirited and you sure can't have very thin skin with some of the threads. I find the threads which are of interest to me, I read them, interject if I choose to and I move on. Truly, i can't read them all nor do I want to!

All that said, I have total respect for admin, it's his site and should be run in the fashion fitting to him.

lots2do 10-09-2010 12:17 PM

I like the way things are handled here. When I was new to all this forum stuff, I found another forum that I only visited once or twice. The arguing I read scorched my eyebrows and I was truly shocked by what was 'allowed'.

MissTreated 10-09-2010 12:27 PM

That's my point. Go where you're comfortable. I'm comfortable going to the "not very monitored" site because I won't buy into the arguing, nor will I read what is potentially offensive or simply of no interest to me, just like here. The other one is vastly visited by men, so it is what it is.

bearisgray 10-09-2010 01:06 PM

It would seem sensible to me to stay away from forums that one is unhappy with the way they are run.

Mimito2 10-09-2010 01:40 PM

Some of us have enough personal drama without adding conflict from a forum. Sometimes you just have to be positive, count to 10 and remember that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. THANK YOU! Admin and Moderators for your guidance an dedication.

patricej 10-09-2010 01:53 PM

you're very welcome. it's a labor of love. you guys mean the world to us. :-)

ptquilts 10-09-2010 02:15 PM

I have to say this is the NICEST forum I have ever seen.

Rhonda 10-09-2010 02:29 PM

I so appreciate not having to wade through alot of cussing. I wasn't raised around it at all and it annoys me to have to deal with it. This is a nice clean board and it stays that way because the people who run it care.

MissTreated 10-09-2010 03:05 PM

That is one thing about the other forum I attend. If someone does use a swear word, the software they use detects it and "bleep" is put in it's place. Not perfect by any means, but it works. I appreciate the honesty over there, but men can be brutally honest sometimes!

I value different opinions, it truly causes a rearrangement of thought and thought processes. That of course is not to say I have to agree, just means I value it, especially from respected peers.

Absolutely - there are enough sites that are anything goes - and people who want to be there are welcome to them.
