What does it mean when the word locked shows up in red on a thread?

It means, you can not add any more comments to the thread.

The thread has been "locked" due to content by Admin/Moderators, or sometimes also at the author's request, in either case no more replies can be added to it.

That's what I thought, but wasn't sure. Thanks for clarifying.
