I went to an Estate Sale today 4 houses down from mine and it is one of the few older homes built in the early 1950's, Its a little larger than mine but it was like walking into a time warp they house had nothing newer furniture and appliance wise than 1964. It was like opening a Better Homes and Gardens in 1957.

Well the kitchen was mind blowing, it still had the original enameled metal cabinets that looked like they were put in last month. The original gas stove and all of the appliances were still there but the ice box blew me away. So much I had to buy it on the spot!!! Its a late 40's to early 50's GM Frigidaire in mint condition!!!!   The chrome is perfect along with the finish and it was still ginning like it was just bought.

I even got a ice cold coke out of it and drank it (thats how they were demonstrating how good it was) so I asked what do you want for it and the lady said make an offer and I got it for $75!

I have a new Kenmore with all the bells and whistles already but I think its coming out as soon as I paint the new old Frigidaire Orange to match the Kitchen Aide mixer we have!!

I found this photo of one just like it on the web to show my wife and she really likes it. Now I might go back and get the gas stove and paint it the same color Orange. It was just as mint as the ice box!!

Here is the photo, kinda looks like an early 50's Pontiac...

Well, it IS nice, but I was hoping to see a sewing machine, lol!!!!!!!

Barbm 06-11-2010 04:21 PM

really cool- can't wait to see it orange.

Alu_Rathbone 06-11-2010 04:23 PM

Gorgeous! Love it!

My Grandfathers building has almost all the original things that where put in the house. Original wood floors, windows, cabinets, bathrooms are all original, doors... all from the fifties! My Great Grandmother had the building built.

I would have loved to have seen that house!!!

Very cool!

cjomomma 06-11-2010 04:51 PM

I remember those and I am not that old. I always thought those were so cool. Great find.

isnthatodd 06-11-2010 04:58 PM

Looks just like the one we had when I was in high school. I did hate defrosting the freezer, tho.

That was the first thing my wife said about it when I told her I bought it. I told her the cool factor out weighed the other issues!!

And lets face it my house was built in 1951, I have some morbid fixation about that year so it was one of those things that were meant to be!!

Me too, I wanna see the new orange appliances all set up and working when they are installed.

Ginger2010 06-11-2010 05:08 PM

Wow! I remember having that first refrigerator just like that when I got married in 1971. I never like defrosting it either!

According to the site I went to to lift the photo it was a 1949 model. But I bet that style was popular for several years.
they had one a little newer than that one in the utility room and I didnt get it but there was a bag of silver coins in that icebox!

We had one just like it in the basement when I was younger...I didn't like having to defrost it and the ice cube trays were something else....but it sure looks cool!

Cold, hard cash?

raptureready 06-11-2010 06:02 PM

How cool is that!!???!? (pun intended) Those old refrigerators are great! I used to have a Crosley Shelvador with the rounded top---that thing ran like a dream but I finally gave it away for a bigger, newer, but in no way better, fridge. The Crosley Company had gone out of business in around 1953 or 56 and I first got the Shelvador in 1977. Kept it until around 1989.

bluebird 06-11-2010 07:37 PM

Grew up with one like that, also hated defrosting it. Go back and get the stove too, have seen them set up on patios and they are great. When we remodeled our kitchen bought a new double oven Roper gas stove to replace the old gas Roper double oven stove. That old stove was made better than the new fancy one. Had the clock, salt n pepper shakers, broiler and the top closed down over the burners when you weren't using it. Wish I had kept that stove, would still be usable long after I'm gone. Had drip pans that you could pull out to clean, remember once a mouse was in the stove, could see his tiny feet running around on the drip pan. Too funny watching the cat trying to get at that mouse. Sorry Ms Mousie.

mom-6 06-11-2010 08:31 PM

Hey I'm supposed to go pick up one of those from a friend's garage when we can work out scheduling. He says you have to watch it or the sodas will freeze and explode. He also said it was heavy as all get out!

Jingle 06-11-2010 10:15 PM

I would hate to see you paint either of them orange, if the paint is in good condition I would leave them white. Orange was not a color chioce when these were made.

CanadianLoon 06-11-2010 10:41 PM

We have an old fridge (used for beer)at the cottage which our daughters painted red! Very cool! Cant find the photo.
The condition is not as good as yours.
I believe that freon gas is an issue with some of these fridges and Hydro Electric pay people to take them away.
We love it.
Enjoy.

pab58 06-12-2010 04:37 AM

I love those old refrigerators!!! That looks like a beauty! ;) Great find!!!

lfw045 06-12-2010 04:58 AM

How cool is that! My Mom and Dad had one of those when I was a kid!

PunkQuilter 06-12-2010 05:27 AM

Billy Great find! I am looking to buy a small home with all those original 40's style metal streamlined cabinets! What's left of them are being ripped out in favor of ..gulp..cherry and granite!

I rented an apartment a looong time ago that had a hulking aqua colored fridge. It had half moon copper colored shelves that spun on a center pole. It was chill in every
sense of the word. What's inside yours shelf-wise? Can you elaborate on the 1951 fixation?

hazeljane 06-12-2010 07:53 AM

Aww Billy-

I think it matches Buttercup, my 1948 Chambers range. And you should send her to me.....

Our house was built in '56 and we bought it from the original owner last year. The kitchen and baths were intact, as is the sandblasted and varnished knotty pine paneling in the den. We love it. We did have to replace an ugly 70's stove with Buttercup, but the fridge is new.

Its in perfect condition but it would look a lot better the thing was painted Orange to match the other appliances. I only use automotive paint so its not like I am going to be going to Kmart and buying a bunch of spray cans.

Plus I can not leave anything alone, a BMW isnt suppose to have the drive line out of a Corvette, but my 2002 328i is getting just that right now.

When I restored my house the former owner had already pulled everything out of the kitchen and put all new in. I redid the bathrooms and got rid of the Pink and Green tiling and went back with something more modern but the kitchen would look really good with the orange stove and icebox. I like the blend of 1950's and the more modern upgrades.

Here is my bathroom.....

KitchenAid makes modern appliances that look old fashioned, but I don't think they have that model. It would be nice if they could put new-age technology into that look, since those old appliances are so power greedy and inefficient while they look so neat. Here in BC there's a huge movement to making our homes more energy efficient which then becomes cost effective and keeps us greener.

gingerella 06-12-2010 11:21 AM

Nothing wrong with the new old fridge, but think of the electricity it will be using. The newer ones are very much more efficient - more "earth-friendly" as it were.

Pam 06-12-2010 11:48 AM

Billy, I really like the color choices in the bath, especially the dark grout between the floor tiles, snazzy!

Luckynumber7 06-12-2010 02:49 PM

Wow, that is awesome! Sounds like a great find.

Thanks this was the first time doing tile work before and the floor was fun to do but is far from perfect. I found out the hard way that the wall going into my bedroom is out of square. But after doing 3 more floors at my house and 3 bathrooms and the kitchen at my moms and dads I think I have the hang of it now.

Here is the floor....

Pam 06-12-2010 06:33 PM

Billy, who knew that laying tile was going to be your first quilting job? Nice on point pattern you have going there with a double border.

littlehud 06-12-2010 07:15 PM

That is so cool. And it still works. They made them to last back then.

wvdek 06-12-2010 08:34 PM

What a neat old fridge. When those shut, they shut. Orange, huh? Well, why not. If it is done astastefull as your other things it will be fine.
