My mother wants to go on vacation. This will probably be their last chance to go on one. She wants to go to Amish and/or Mennonite country. We have discussed Penn., and Kansas, but now she has mentioned Montizuma, Ga. We live here in Ga., but we are interested in what ideas my new family may have.

Looking forward to your thoughts, Nana Julie

The Lancaster area of PA is so pretty! They would enjoy that - and would have to have their picture taken under the town sign for Intercourse, PA! I'm from Texas and it takes hours to get anywhere here. But in PA you have Gettysburg and Philadelphia for history people, Lancaster County for different culture people, Hershey for chocolate people (Is there anything there still to see? Hasn't the chocolate factory closed?) My husband is a train buff so we went to several train museums there, too. Not far to Atlantic City from there.

My daughter and son-in-law lived in the DC area when he was in the Marine Corps. When we'd visit them we'd go traveling around for a few days, then stay with them for a few days, then off again. I was amazed at how many things we could see without driving for days and days!

Lancaster PA is probably the largest Amish area but I've not been there so I'm not sure what tourist stuff they have.

There is also a large Amish community in Iowa - Amana Colonies. There are I think 7 different villages, all have at least 1 shop, all have quilts <g>, the largest community has a lot of shops for arts, crafts, food, etc. - and of course the Amana manufacturing plant. Very strange - this big Amana "radarange" mfg plant right there in the Amish village. Haven't been there in years. It's a "day" trip, you won't spend much more time than that there.

Lancaster area, PA is just gorgeous. All the small towns, wonderful people, resturants, shopping, don't miss the dairies (if you go, incredible real ice cream). It is like a whole another world. Everywhere we've been in this wonderful country is just terrific. Once you get past the "franchise" part, each city has it's own unique character.
