losing weight

anyone have any good results with weight loss supplements like hydroxycut or others like that?

Sandygirl 05-10-2012 02:59 AM

Nutrisystem for me.

Take a good look at your eating habits and portion size. only by adjusting those will you lose weight. not some potion or pill.

I agree, pills are not the solution. Clean eating and exercise. Log what you eat. Check out this website http://www.myfitnesspal.com/ It helped me to loose 15 pounds.
Good luck, I know it is not easy to loose!!!

The best thing is watch what you eat and excercise. I haven't lost much weight but have lost 118.5 inches. My Dr. says that mucsle weighs more and keep at it. Soon the weight will come off.

There's a very interesting article in the current Newsweek magazine written by a doctor whose speciality is obesity.
Cutting out sugar and starches is what this MD says is the only way to fight American obesity.
He also says exercise may be good for a lot of reasons, but has nothing to do with weight loss.

This is a great aid in losing weight. Lots of my friends are on here as well. Good luck.

Dr. Oz had things to eat to lose weight on his show this week. One tip was Expresso and a chocolate cookie that he said the recipe will be on the web site. Maybe you can find something there that will help.

Jennifer Hudson will tell you that Weight Watchers is THE one!

Ladyjanedoe 05-10-2012 04:53 AM

My fitness pal is great but don't rely on their calorie estimates for exercise. I bought a heart rate monitor when I hit a real nasty plateau and discovered that they were telling me I was burning twice as many calories as I was. I use www. my fooddiary.com now because I was having trouble getting ugly tracking cookies on my pc from all the ads on myfitnesspal. It's essentially the same thing but you have to pay for it. It's worth it for me not to have to run a security scan to clean my pc 3 times a day. I've lost 62 pounds since Christmas.

That hasn't been true for me at all! Exercise is the reason I've lost so much weight. That and strength training. I have RA and lupus and if I can do it, anyone can.

You might want to re-think what your Dr tells you .... as he's far from correct.

Think about it ... a pound is a pound is a pound .... one pound = 16 oz.

Fat, muscle, lead, feathers, whatever .... one pound of each is still one pound!!!!!!!!

The only difference is that some of those pounds take up more space, and some less.

LynnVT 05-10-2012 05:06 AM

There are no shortcuts. Hang in there and most of all, be honest with yourself about what you're eating and what you're doing. Move more, eat less. Good luck with your journey. Congrats to those who are doing so well losing weight!

redkimba 05-10-2012 07:36 AM

I went with Weight Watchers for the loss. (some folks here diss it, but - hey- it worked for me)

Jingle 05-10-2012 07:56 AM

Losing weight is alot easier than keeping it off. Its a lifetime battle.

Need to make lifestyle changes while using any supplement

Depending on how you body reacts to the supplements, you can have good results losing weight with supplements. However, any supplement like that should only be taken as a crutch while you are losing the weight. At the same time you should be making lifestyle changes so that when you've lost a comfortable amount of weight and stop taking the supplement, you can maintain that weight loss.

By lifestyle changes, I mean changes in WHAT you eat (focus on healthy or healthier versions of food - generally speaking, lots of fruits/veggies, lean meats, whole grains instead of white/more processed junk; baked, not fried, etc), WHY you eat (eat b/c your body needs nutrition & energy, not b/c it's time to eat, others are eating, emotions, at a party, etc.), WHERE you eat (try to eat as a family at a table, not in the car, on the run, in front of the TV, etc.). Try drinking water with your meals instead of soda (even diet is not good for you).

To help with portion control, immediately portion out the food when you get home from the grocery store and/or when finished cooking a meal. That way, when you serve yourself, it's already portioned and you don't have to think about it. If you think you might want more than one portion at a time, take one to start, eat that (w/out wolfing it down) and then take a few minutes to listen to your body and see if you're really still hungry. I seem to remember my health teacher several years ago saying that it can take up to 20 minutes for your brain to recognize/process that you're full when eating, so try giving it time to do so.

Lifestyle changes also mean incorporating physical activity into your daily/weekly routine. While going to the gym is great, you should also look at adding daily activities such as walking a dog (instead of just letting it out back on a leash), taking the stairs instead of an escalator or elevator, parking further away from the store, etc. to your daily routine. When choosing entertainment activities, try to choose activities that are more active than passive (think hiking vs. movies).

Small changes, when taken together, can be huge. However, as you implement small changes, the progress can be slow. Using a supplement can give you the emotional jump that you need keep with the small changes. Even with a supplement your weight loss should still be gradual. Unless you gained all your weight 10 pounds a week, don't expect to be losing weight at 10 pounds a week.

Ultimately, all programs and supplements should be a short term fix while you make long term changes to your life.

I have been using whey protein shakes to lose weight with some success. The best thing that happened for me was that I was diagnosed with low thyroid. I am taking a daily prescription now and it has helped tremendously. If you haven't had one taken, do so. It is worth it.

nycbgirl 05-11-2012 04:54 AM

Many years ago I broke my ankle and was bed ridden for about 2 months....so my dear friend from work called me and said " You better watch what you eat cuz you're just going to get FATTER!!!!! Mind you he wasn't being rude, we always had weight discussions. So I decided that since I couldn't move I had to have alot less calories so I had a slim fast for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, turkey usually, and a very small portion for dinner, just whatever my MIL made I ate. If she had desseert I'd allow about a two bites of it. I never felt deprived and I lost about 10 lbs. It was not hard just made a decision and stuck with it.

just to add on to this statement: People are aways getting density and weight mixed up. Muscle is more dense so it takes up less space here's a link to a photo of muscle vs fat: http://www.onemorebite-weightloss.co...t-v-muscle.jpg

For me those magic weight loss pills like hydroxycut make me feel weird, it raises my blood pressure and makes me nauseous and my migraines get worse. My problem is I don't eat for hunger, I eat for emotional reasons so most of the time those pills don't work for me anyway. 20yrs ago my dr gave phentamine (sp) I had lots of energy but didn't lose a pound because even though it wasn't hungry, I was still doing my mindless eating.

Since I've hit menapause I'm not losing like I used to, I'm doing it much slower so I'll make the life style changes necessary to keep it off this time.

Good luck, it's a hard to lose weight and many of us know what you're feeling.

y.morman 05-11-2012 05:12 AM

This may sound silly but Weight Watchers does work. It teaches portion control and healthy eating habits. When I needed to lose weight my doctor recommended Weight Watchers because in is not a diet but teaches life style change. By watching portions and tracking what I ate I lost 65 pounds. Good Luck!

ashiecat 05-11-2012 09:39 AM

I have lost 19 lbs since the first week of Feb. I had just been told that I had type 2 diabetes & my dr said to cut out white rice, white potatoes & bread. I was told that I had to watch my carbs, but I didn't get to see a nutritionist for a month to find out how many carbs I was allowed. So, without stressing too much but watching the amount of fat grams & counting my carbs I have dropped the weight & NOT been hungry! This is the easiest 'diet' or lifestyle change I have EVER been on. So, I am back to having bread, rice & potatoes - but in moderation. For the most part, I am keeping my carbs just below what the nutritionist said I could have (175-185) and I try to walk most days (dr prescribed 10 mi per wk) and its coming off. I have even found chips that I could have that were only 15-18 carbs per serving & have 5 grams of fiber. So I don't feel deprived at all - I can even have chocolate in moderation!

ShabbyTabby 05-11-2012 11:16 AM

Over the years (I'm now 77) I have fought the "Battle of the Bulge" and probably tried every diet or pill to come along but all in all I have found Weight Watchers to be the best to follow. The new plan is really easy and you don't give up everything you love...just portion control and cooking methods. I have heard so not so good reports on Hydroxycut so be careful about pills as they do not change your eating habits and that is what you must do to lose it and KEEP IT OFF.

raedar63 05-11-2012 11:19 AM

For me the life long struggle gets harder as I age . I am working on more exercise and simple calories in and calories used . I have done it all over the years . Blood sweat and yes sometimes tears is what it takes. I try really hard to eat as few preservatives as possible.

I do a modified Adkins...40 carbs a day along with a No White diet....no flour, sugar, white bread, pasta, white rice, etc. Don't have cravings and feel satisfied on this diet. Have lost 62 lbs. so far.

Depression and stress! Works every time!

Cornerstone quilter 05-11-2012 09:47 PM

Thanks for all your input. I have considered Weight Watchers. I have a friend who has lost a bit of weight on WW. She and her husband both. They look great and when we go out to eat (a group of 6), they don't seem to be deprived. Will talk it over with hubby. He needs to lose some weight, too, although his is due to medication.

mountain deb 05-11-2012 10:53 PM

Sigh, gaining the wt. is sooooo easy. Unfortunately, getting rid of it is so hard. I know from experience. I am about to join a new program through the VA system for wt loss, I hope it is the kick in the pants I need. I know once I get my brain in gear the body will follow.

coachmatthewsvhs 05-12-2012 03:54 AM

Beware of pills. My mother took physician prescribed weight loss med (granted, this was a long time ago), one a day for 4 days. Caused an aneurysm. She died at 45 years old. That medication is no longer on the market.

Ruby the Quilter 05-15-2012 09:00 PM

My dh has used Sensa and it has worked for him.

charity-crafter 05-16-2012 04:11 AM

I was wondering about sensa. I saw something on one of those news shows. Costco has it now but it's still pretty pricey.
