Macbook Pro and Embroidery Files

My husband bought me a Macbook Pro for my birthday. I have a Brother Dreamweaver machine. I have downloaded embroidery files to a flash drive. When I've tried to open them nothing shows up. I know Mac's are different than PCs regarding embroidery. Am I doing it wrong or will I have to download a specific software? I googled Macs and embroidery files and there were all these different software programs to download. But I don't want to spend a lot of money downloading software I don't need to.

There are some virtual programs to use. More than likely, like my machine, it's window based so it won't tale to your apple. My son downloaded bootcamp to my MacBook Pro and it works like a champ. I have half apple and half windows for my embroidery machine. There is a janome 12000 group where Jim stutsman talks about how to use your apple with your embroidery machine. The directions aren't just for janome. Very informative.
