Hi...something different...just wondering what sort of mattress you all would recommend (brand names will probably be different here in Aust). We may be in the market for a new mattress and there's so much to choose from. Our's is an innerspring and far too hard and I wake up with a sore back every morning.
The ones with the comfy pillow tops are so nice but I've heard they can develop hollows..can anyone confirm that?
Latex is very expensive and some say it's hot?
There's pocket springs and the other sort with the linked springs.
I just don't want to spend all that money and still not have the right mattress.
Any suggestions? I know it's an individual thing but wondered how the various products held up over time :)
Thanks

We have a Temperpedic bed, it is what they call a memory foam mattress. It is so comfy.

I have an innerspring, but it is not too hard. We also added a memory foam topper. I love it. One problem with the pillow top is that you can't turn them so they wear evenly. I think going and trying several is what you will want to do. My bed is about 11 years old, supposedly I should replace it but it is still very comfy. If your bed is still in good shape, you might try a memory foam topper to soften it up.

Also Temperpedic. Foam mattresses tend to be hot and sweaty in the summer and very firm and cold in the winter. I have back and joint issues and I found the Temperpedic matteress to help. I read that a good firm spring mattres with a nice temperpedic topper is the best of both worlds. Spend a lot of time laying in the store trying out mattresses.

We have a pillow top and I hate it. It does get hollows, when hubby goes out of town on business I sleep in the center on the hump to try and even it out. Hubby has slept in a LOT of beds on his travels and really likes the Marriott mattresses. You can check them out on their website.

Call around to your local hotels to find out what kind of mattresses they have - in my area, some of them have Tempur-Pedics, some of them have those sleep number beds. Use a discount travel website to get a discounted rate, and try them out overnight.

Hi miss_ ticky2
I live in Brisbane.Just up the road. I have a Slumberland Chiropractic. I've had it for quite a few years(about 10 years) and it's as good as the day I bought it. I turn it frequently at least every three months. I just love it and my daughter said "it feels like it hugs you" when she slept in my bed.
But having said all that my husband doesn't like it. Not that it matters as we have separate rooms because he is trying to raise snoring to Olympic standard.
You need to lie on the mattress for at least 10-15 minutes in the shop. Yes it can be a bit embarrassing but it is your money you'll be spending. Just lie back close your eyes and think of waking pain free.Don't rush your decision you'll have it for a long time. Don't try more than 3 in any one day. Good luck and I hope you'll be happy with your choice.
Just remembered:- it will take about a week to get used to the new mattress. I was horrified when I got mine thought I'd made wrong choice, but my youngest daughter said they were given that advice when they bought theirs.
If you want to speak to me just PM me.

I have a comfort select. Looove it as I can make it firm or soft depending on my pain level. Does have pillow ton but it zippers on. I am going to call and get a new one. Their mattress r
Guarenteed for so manY yrs. I had problems with the pump. Got a new one at priestess price! Much cheaper! Sure the pillowtop will be too.

We have a pillow-top, it is not too bad but you can only rotate it rather than turn it, which I am not too keen on. We don't have hollows in it and I don't find it too warm (apparently a lot of people find them too hot). We did try out a number of mattresses over a couple of weeks and we are happy with our Slumbercorp Posture Caress (has a 15 yr guarantee).

One thing that is important, which we were told in one place, don't rush into it and don't get a mattress that is too firm. Height/weight of the sleepers is also important to consider, if the salesperson is a good one, they will steer you in the right direction.

We always use a pure wool fitted underlay (it is quite fluffy) all year round, this does act as a mattress protector and is very good for keeping temperatures even. I find latex impossible to sleep on and I always detest that faint rubber smell (weird, but thought I'd mention it).

Hi Katesnanna...does that one have a pillowtop on it? I'm going to google it but just wondered.
Thanks :)

We have a Serta and love it. :) Just depends on what your body prefers. Go to a mattress store and lay on all of them. I went twice before I decided. :)

I have a Temperpedic bed also and love it.We had a pillow top mattress but the mattress became uneven and uncomfortable.

Sleep Number Mattress - I highly recommond. They are a little pricey but well worth the cost. We have one at home and one in our motorhome. I am not the best sleeper at night, but since the Sleep Number mattress came in to my life I get a good nights rest every night. Also, good sleeping when we travel.
This mattress is adjustable on both sides, I have a different setting than my husband. DOES NOT get hollow spots where you lay like some of the pillow top or Temperpedic foam mattresses do.

Wishing you a good nights sleep.

I love my Temperpedic. I had such bad back problems that I used to have to roll out of bed to my knees to get up in the morning. That was on a pillow top and after a few years we had a bed with hills and valleys. If you got too close to the middle, you felt like you were struggling to keep from rolling down hill all night. Since we got the Temperpedic about 7 years ago, my back pain has not returned.

ontheriver 06-08-2011 05:31 AM

We have a sleep number mattress. I sleep great, each side can be set to your preference.

Prism99 06-08-2011 07:29 AM

My favorite brand is Stearns and Foster, but avoid their top-of-the-line. I find a little below tol to be their very best.

We have a pillowtop this time and I do not recommend a pillowtop. It will develop hollows even when the mattress underneath does not. If you can't find a mattress with good support that has a soft top, then I recommend adding a foam topper that you can replace as it wears out.

I also do not recommend getting an ultra-thick mattress (like the S&F top-of-the-line). In my opinion it adds negatives. The mattress gets heavier so you are less likely to rotate it. Biggest drawback is that it becomes harder to find bottom sheets that will fit the mattress and, when you do find them, they are very expensive and never on sale. I would be happier with a more standard width mattress!

We tried a sleep-by-number because I have back problems. I liked it, but my dh absolutely could not stand it. It is a lot of work, but he packed it up and returned the whole thing. Not sure, but I think it was the sound of the mattress he could not tolerate. He did reject several other standard type mattresses because of the way they were made, I think with inter-connected springs. He can't stand the sound they make when someone moves. It was easy for him to eliminate these just by lying down and moving around on the mattress in the store.

Furza Flyin 06-08-2011 07:39 AM

We stayed in a hotel with a full size sleep number. NO SLEEP at all. There was only one airbladder in the full size and everytime my DH moved (he is 6'1" I am almost 5') I would go rolling off the edge. It was worse than a waterbed.

noahscats7 06-08-2011 08:52 AM

Boy, can I ever confirm that pillow tops form a DEEP impression where you lay. Ours measured 11" deep when we laid a yardstick across it and measured the depth. We were able to return it for a credit and get a different kind. So that being said...you don't want one.

i have a sleep number bed and love it

bearisgray 06-08-2011 09:16 AM

Good topic.

I'm weird. Sometimes I can fall asleep on the floor in about 10 seconds.

Other times, I toss and turn all night trying to get more-or-less comfortable. (And then, when I finally do, DH decides he has had his nap for the evening on the couch and then decides to come to bed! :hunf: )

I was wondering about the Temperpedic - I'm short and heavy and he's skinny - and we only have room for a double bed.

cjomomma 06-08-2011 10:06 AM

I have Serta posture pedic and love it. We have had it for 17 years. I always catch my kids lying on our bed during the day because they love how it feels.

hobo2000 06-08-2011 10:43 AM

My hubby and I both have back problems. We have a Select Comfort or "Sleep number bed". It is heavenly. Some nights I need it softer and other night the harder the better. With this bed I can have it anyway I want. Ours is 15 years old and like new. Soooo easy to move and its a king sized bed. You have to buy the mid-range on up, the less expensive ones are not so good. Ours has the heavy pillow top and does not develop hollows.

DeneK 06-08-2011 11:20 AM

I have had my tempurpedic almost 10 years and I love it. Surprised to see that so many others have one.

miss_ticky2 06-09-2011 05:25 PM

Hi everyone...thanks for all your replies. I just want to update that we went looking at mattresses yesterday and spent a little more than we had hoped but now have a latex mattress. They were able to deliver it yesterday and I can't say I had a great sleep because it feels so different...lol. I know it will get better. But...this morning is the first morning in probably nearly 8 years that I got up without a sore back!! Yippee :D I think we made the right choice :)
