Melting crayons

2 Attachment(s)
Made some heart shaped crayons with my younger son this afternoon. We took broken crayons and melted them in heart and flower shaped molds. My son will give this to classmates as valentines day gifts. Cheaper and nicer than the paper valentines I normally do and the crayons change colors as they continue to write.

What a neat idea. It can be used and used up . Cards tend to get tossed anyway.

Great idea. 2 questions...does this ruin the tray? Where did you get the trays from?

That is such a fun project. :) my oldest loves to "melt stuff" and she has melted so many crayons. The plastic trays that are for candy making work great(you have to pour the melted crayon into it) and they pop out so easy. I picked up one of the silicone trays and that didn't work too good. The wax stuck to it and the new crayon didn't have a smooth surface. Not sure how to really explain it.

I bought a non-stick Wilton pan at sur la table store. I melted crayons for about 10 minutes in the oven at 250 degrees. I rested them on my stove top for 10 minutes and then outside in the cold weather for maybe 10 minutes. Once the are cold, they slide right out. No need to spray the pan with anything. A lot of fun. I used a razor to get the paper off the crayons that still had some paper. The pan is fine. The wax washed right off. just to make sure i got rid of all the residue, I will run the pan through the dishwasher once and it will be as good as new.

Brilliant! I love this idea, so clever!! My kids are all too old for this craft, but I'm going to store it away for "someday" with future grandkids. :)
