Mending/Darning socks

Does anyone else still do this?

I can (and will) mend a small toe hole with a machine mend.

Does any one still mend socks by hand? My Mom did - and she did it elegantly!

It seems like a shame to toss a whole sock that just has a bitty hole in it.

I can definitely understand why someone would mend hand knitted socks. That would be a lot of effort to discard for a small hole.

I do mend my store bought socks by machine with the darning stitch and my free arm. I can do a nice flat mend to extend the socks wear if it only has a toe hole and the rest of the sock is good. Hand knitted socks I would mend by hand if I had any.

I mend my socks, but my husband refuses to let me do his. He just keeps on wearing them until he can't stand it any more!

My mother also darned socks. I have her darning egg somewhere. Me? Nope. Not gonna do it. I have no inclination to darn at all.

I mend the gym socks that are my favorites, by machine. Either use FM foot or zig zag. My aunt used to put socks on a lightbulb and was meticulous about her darning. They turned out beautiful. My mother would pull the two sides together and make a big lumpy seam that gave me blisters! She liked to knit. Not sew.

I still darn socks by hand. Have my grandma's darning egg. Very relaxing.

I mend mine too, since I wear the socks with the individual toes in them, and they're only available around Christmas. My DH "can't stand the thought of wearing something like that!" But I secretly mended a small hole in a few of his socks and he didn't seem to notice.:p

I have a small gourd which is almost shaped like a light bulb which I have used to mend socks for over 50 years! I enjoy doing that task.

I darn socks, replace buttons, re-do elastic, put on patches ....anything to extend the life of garments and accessories. When totally unsuitable to wear, depending on what it is/what it is made of goes in the rag box, all salvageable bits cut out for re-using as bags/quilts/whatever....nothing is wasted.

Definitely yes, you knw the saying waste not want not.
