One of the more important things I learned from my Mom was:

"Do the best you can with what you have and know at the time that you are doing it."

No point in berating oneself years later with the could haves - should haves - would haves - if one didn't know any better at the time or have the resources to do differently.

That said - when one could do better - improvement was expected!

Your mom sounds like a wise woman.

One of the more important things I learned as a mom is "don't should on your kids".

It helped me refrain from those useless conversations that start with statements like "why didn't you...." or "you should have..." The past is the past and we can only learn from it when we are ready.

Of course, that advice makes so much more sense now that I'm an old(er) woman!

My Mom's advice is "Keep it simple" and "Make your own Happiness" It does make more sense asI get older!

Mom always said, "If you cant say something NICE, say nothing at all." Always tell my kids that too!

Sometimes the unpleasant MUST be said. But it should be done with love - when possible.

I hear my daughters saying to THEIR kids the same thing I did to them.."I did the best I could with what I had".

End of discussion with them.

We can do no more than that.

That's good advice for some of us who never heard it earlier in our lives!

My Mom still gives me good advice, without realizing it. She is teaching me how to age with dignity, grace, and humor. What an amazing woman she is. I am so grateful :)
