Money maker idea for Quilt Guilds
 

Since most guilds have a need to raise some funds for programs, charity work, etc. here's a suggestion:

our Guild has a yearly "garage sale"(held in our meeting location) where members, and sometimes others, donate items related to sewing. We almost always have a machine donated and LOTS of fabric yardage, patterns, books, magazines, & notions. We price things pretty cheap--set rate on books, magazine bundles, yardage at $2/yd, scrap bags (very popular) and then of course various items like quilt hangars, UFO's, some knitting items, etc. Almost every year we get a donation of some deceased seamtress' stash--helps the family & us.

We have found that putting ad in local paper, on FB, and the local swap/sell social media is all it takes. We have several people that sew for charities that know to come early every year and it really helps them get lots of fabric, etc at "dirt cheap" prices.

We also have found that a morning only sale is enough to get many people out and not be a full day commitment. Afterward, we recycle the magazines & some books that are paperback and patterns way out of date, rest of unsold items goes to a local charitable thrift shop.

I personally hate being the organizer (did my turn today) but if everyone prices items and there's a set price on the things you get lots of, then it is fairly easy.

This year we made almost $800 and had enough decent yardage left to make dinner scarves & fidget lap quilts for the local nursing homes.

I was in a guild that did that. We simplified the pricing by wrapping each piece in a piece of yarn, the color corresponding to the approximate size of the piece. Then anything with yellow yarn was one price, red was another.
It was simpler than putting price tags on each item and made it possible for us to reduce prices at the end of the day by just changing the dollar amount corresponding to each color.

My current guild guild makes up baskets of the donated items and raffles them during a meeting. We buy tickets and place them in bags next to each basket full of quilting goodies, and then a ticket is picked from each bag.

That's a "Win, Win" !!
