Musical instrument - Do you play?

I have always wanted to 'try' to play an autoharp. Finally found one at a good price and have started practing.
It got me to wondering...
Since all of the ladies and gentlemen on the board are so talented, do you play any instrument and what..if you do? And when do you find time? LOL

Tartan 12-02-2012 06:09 PM

My DIL is a very accomplished musician and teaches music as well. I could take lessons but so far I have not had the same desire to learn as I have for quilting.

CindyA 12-02-2012 06:20 PM

Piano, but not for many, many years. I do think of taking it up again, though.

quiltingshe 12-02-2012 06:58 PM

Piano, but only for my own pleasure. It is a creative outlet as well. I especially sit down and play if I am stressed. I find it is a great relaxer.

Annieflower 12-02-2012 07:46 PM

You are never too old to learn something that is new and creative. Making a quilt is love of the creative spirit and that is my new challenge after singing and playing the piano all of my life. I feel so inspired when I read the posts here at the Quilting Board. I have learned alot and now I sing and stitch. Happy Holidays!:o

When I retired almost 2 years ago, one of my goals was to play the banjo. I have been taking lessons for almost a year and don't consider myself very good yet even though I have a musical background. Never the less, I still enjoy it.

momto5 12-03-2012 02:46 PM

I play several....piano, organ, keyboard, guitar, clarinet, oboe, bass clarinet and have attempted any others I came across. My Dad was a very talented musician...but unfortunately, I am the only one in the family who took after him. And I WILL play for folks if forced into it...but I'd much rather play just for me. I like the oldies, hymns and some classical music, and I play to relieve stress and sometimes, "just 'cause I can"....:)

LenaBeena 12-03-2012 06:10 PM

I play piano and learned to play the zither for our community theater production of "Smoke on the Mountain". It is a wonderful musical about a traveling family of Gospel singers in the South in the 1930's. Anyway my husband plays guitar, our son plays clarinet and drums and our daughter plays french horn and flute. Our son-in-law plays eight different instruments and our two-year old granddaughter loves to dance and play her xylophone. My favorite instrument is bagpipes and I love to hear them play marches, laments, and of course Amazing Grace.

sassey 12-03-2012 07:13 PM

i took piano lessons for 10 years also played the clairnet and taught myself the accordian havent played in years

miss_ticky2 12-03-2012 10:16 PM

Piano/keyboard here, but self taught. I play at our local church each Sunday ... it's a very small church and very very lacking in musicians, otherwise I wouldn't be playing...lol. But, there's a need there and I am able to fill it :)

DebbieJJ 12-04-2012 01:22 AM

I play the piano and organ....also I'm the organist at our church. It seems like there's a shortage of piano/organ players in our area, or like miss_ticky2, I would be sitting in the audience or in the choir too. It's time to let some of the younger ones take over, although I really enjoy playing in the services. :)

sew_Tracy 12-04-2012 01:35 AM

Before my hands and wrists went to pot I played Classical guitar and picking, play mostly only strumming now and I play Mountain Dulcimer. Played my grandparent's bellows organ when I was a kid. My grandfather used to ask me if I could play "Under the Sea and Far Away." Anyone else know THAT one :)

lillybeck 12-04-2012 04:08 AM

I do play the piano only not well. I started lessons in my late 40's because our church needed a piano player. I am not great by any means and only know how to play reading the notes and using chords and octaves. I have learned over the yrs that I will use the talent I have. I struggle to learn while others just sit down and start playing. I had a lifelong desire to play and sing and the Lord has made that happen.

sandyl 12-04-2012 05:00 AM

My DGD asked me that question last week! I told her when I was in jr. high I played the accordian. She immediately went into fits of hysterical laughter. What's funny about an accordian player?

I don't would of like to but never made time for it. I do have a extremely talented son inlaw who is a musician made music therapist. His main instrument is the saxophone but he plats so many others. I love to hear him play!

sewnsewer2 12-04-2012 06:29 AM

I used to play the organ, flute, clarinet, piccilo.

PensyDutch 12-04-2012 06:35 AM

I was started on piano lessons at the early age of three. My grandparents and mother were all accomplished pianists and my grandfather was church organist before I was born. Music has been my life. I taught for years, and later managed and became the CEO of a retail piano and organ company. I married my wholesale piano representative, who is a guitar player and vocalist. My son took lessons on both bagpipes and guitar and organ. My daughter plays piano. My grandaughter plays guitar, keyboard, and drums. We are retired now and my hubby is active in performance locally with a songwriters group and plays at "open mics". I now have taken up quilting and along with needlework, and paper crafts, I am keeping myself busy and happy in my "golden years". Martin Luther stated that the gift of language and the gift of music deserved the highest praise.

Caswews 12-04-2012 06:49 AM

Piano, Violin, Viola used to play those in my younger years and probably could again.. but right now my main focus is Quilting and sewing and crafts and ..... LOL

Tudey 12-04-2012 07:08 AM

30 years ago I learned to play guitar just well enough to accompany myself in singing, which I do well!

carolynjo 12-04-2012 07:26 AM

I took piano for years but only "play at it." I play for my pleasure, not for others. I have been a singer for nearly 70 years, though, and enjoy that very much. I sing in church choir only now and sing around the house for my pleasure.

solstice3 12-04-2012 07:43 AM

I played piano for years.... even played for Sunday school. Still have the piano but it is at my daughter's house. Need to bring it home one day!

WMD926 12-04-2012 08:08 AM

I play piano, clarinet and sing. I haven't had a chance to play/sing lately but I do love music.

wildyard 12-04-2012 08:23 AM

I love music, but the only instrument I actually play well is my boudhran. I rarely play it typically in Irish fashion, I prefer to hand play it, and love playing it to country and bluegrass music. I tried the guitar and autoharp but holding them causes me too much pain in my neck and shoulders. bummer!
My husband owns a music shop, plays just about everything, if not everything, he sells and has jams in the store every Saturday afternoon.
I also write a few songs now and then and love to sing, tho I sing with heart, not necessarily talent. LOL

Patchworkmarion 12-04-2012 09:32 AM

Piano and piano accordian, but not much anymore.Too busy quilting.

nygal 12-04-2012 09:44 AM

Unfortunalety I am not musically inclined at all. When we lived in Alaska I joined in the Hand Bell Choir. I tried SO hard to read music but my brain just is not wired for that. I attended all the practice meetings. The other people in the group, mostly older folks at that time were very nice and encouraging but I knew I was not good at it. So I ended up dropping out. I was actually sad because I just could not "get it".

Jannie 12-04-2012 04:13 PM

I play the radio really well! I took piano for about 6 months as a child. Just couldn't make the time for practicing. All 3 children can play the piano (living thru mother's mistake) and husband plays sax. I did take piano lessons again as an adult for a couple years, but I would much rather sew than practice.

Grammie Sharon 12-04-2012 04:56 PM

I always wanted to play the piano as a child. I took accordian lessons for awhile as a kid. About 10 years ago when my daughter stopped taking lessons I asked her teacher if she took in adults. I took lessons for 9 years. I'm not the greatest but it was a dream. She even entered me into federation competitions. I earned a silver cup. Guess old people dont get gold but silver. Anyway I was happy. I play handbells in our church bell choir. I love doing that.

Me too, played for many years in elementary and junior high. Have seriously though about getting one of those nice keyboards but I KEEP buying sewing machines

captlynhall 12-04-2012 08:04 PM

Piano. I'm better when I practice a lot, not so much when I don't. But only play for myself.

mountain deb 12-05-2012 06:47 AM

My sewing machine is the only instrument I play.

MimiBug123 12-05-2012 09:38 AM

I play piano and organ at church. I sing a solo occasionally, as well. When I'm stressed, I can sit down and play some old hymns and it relaxes me immediately. Almost as relaxing as quilting!!!

Central Ohio Quilter 12-05-2012 10:38 AM

I had about 6 years of piano lessons when I was little and still really enjoy playing when I can, but I gave my piano to my step-granddaughters.

I do play handbells in church and just love playing!

There is just something good going on in your brain when you make music!! I believe it enhances your creativity altogether!

Pat M. 12-05-2012 03:48 PM

Started a four years of age, played until freshman in college. Married, kids, retired and my mother bought me a piano and I found a good teacher and started all over again. Got carpal tunnel in my wrist and so the story goes.

svenskaflicka1 12-05-2012 10:46 PM

don't have much time for it any more, but was raised in a household that believed that music was second only to breathing. dad started me on harmonica when i was under a year old, and i "got" a small accordion for a baby shower gift. started piano when i turned 5, accordion when i turned 7, clarinet when i was 10, voice when i turned 5, organ when i was 11, guitar when i was 18, banjo when i was 45, keyboard when i was 40. finally took a course in piano tuning, restoration, and repair when i was 31, so i could tune all the darned things sitting in the house. sure wish i had time to really master them all, but, hey--scripture says "make a joyful noise", not "be perfect in everything you try!" we all make musical noise now, of one kind or another. hubby plays guitar, mandolin, banjo. eldest, piano/voice. middle, piano, accordion, violin, voice. youngest, voice, guitar, accordion. we are just a bunch of music geeks. and my folks were right. music is second only to breathing.

Butterflyblue 12-06-2012 10:53 AM

I used to play a little harmonica, but haven't done it in awhile. I have a limited amount of creative energy and too many other things I want to make/do.

Cagey 12-07-2012 09:52 AM

I play the piano, used to play the clarinet but doubt that I have the wind power for that anymore. I used to play the violin and started taking lessons again last year but my family couldn't take the noise so I quit the lessons. My DGD is a natural. She plays the piano beautifully (self taught) and plays the trumpet in her high school band.
