That little toot grabbed the kitchen dishsoap, ran into the den with it, my daughter (her mother)saw her and jumped up to get it away from her as she was holding it upside down. Sophie saw her mom jump up and thought the chasing game was starting and she did a little jig and took off with it spilling out. It was a liquid dishsoap and my daughter cleaned it up and went to do something else. She called me later crying because when she went back in there she saw it had bleached out my carpet! grrr! So....I'm going to try to dye it with a clothing dye, does anyone know how to set the dye so it won't bleed next time I shampoo the carpet?

Oh my goodness. I wouldn't have thought that dishsoap would bleach carpet. You poor thing! I feel for you.

Call a carpet repair company, they could dye it or take a piece out of a closet to repair it.

What kind of detergent was it?

It was a liquid Walmart brand for the dishwasher. It didn't indicate bleach was in it but I guess they all have some amount of bleach. The dishsoap is locked up now!

Before you cut up your closet carpet, try coloring the "stain" with a Sharpie marker! You may need the closet at a later time.

The guy that did some work on our fireplace bleached the carpet in my sewing room. I call the people who laid the carpet and they replaced just that part. You can't even see where it is. Since we didn't have any carpet left they took it out of a closet.

I used the professionals (I got a reference from the company that put in the carpet) to come out and dye a few bleach spots in my new carpet. The work was fantastic and colorfast after a few hours. The job was a perfect match and it was quite inexpensive. I wouldn't attempt it myself. They had about five different bottles of spray dye and they just kept going over the spots mixing the the different bottles, it was kind of neat to watch and nine years later it is still good as new. Until that day, I had no idea it was even a possibility.

Almost all dishwasher liquid has bleach in it. Believe me, I read all the labels on them. I gave up on liquid and just use powder, but my daughter still uses liquid. We don't buy any of the liquid that contains bleach, as we don't want bleach going in the septic system..

So sorry this happened to your carpet. Wishing you well on the repair job, whatever you decide to do on it.

I think that is what the "antibacterial" is in dishsoaps now...

Will your house insurance cover it? My Girl fiends Nephew spilled bleach in her dining room and the insurance replaced her carpet in the whole house as it was all the same.

No dish detergent stain here, but when DGS was about two, he go ahold of my coral nail polish, opened it and applied it as lipstick!! All I could think was to get it off his mouth, he dropped the bottle, and it went on my new white carpet!! Carpet shop cut the stain out, added a piece of carpet I had kept ( was I physic?????) . Good as new!! Word to the wise, always keep piece of new carpeting!!

Lisa, my husband & I have a carpet cleaning & dyeing company. We don't think that the liquid soap bleached your carpet. (Unless the dish soap had bleach in it) Our suggestion is for you to call a professional carpet cleaning company to get the soap out. If by chance it has been bleached out they can either dye it or patch the carpet. You'd have to have extra carpet to match for patching. But we feel if it's just plain dishsoap that cleaning will get the rest of the soap out. Good luck!

Lisa, I would follow Debbie's advice before you do anything. If that does not work, you certainly can have carpet people replace a small area, if you have some extra carpet or a place (like in a closet) that you would be ok with having removed.

This reminds me...18 years ago (wow, hard to believe it has been that long) we had all new carpet put in our house, downstairs and up, over the course of 2 days. Later in the evening on a Sat. night, I noticed our youngest DD (who was about 2ish at the time) had something bright orange on her...looking closely, I discovered it was orange paint (from my painting days). She had tracked it up the stairs and into the landing at the top. Yep, bright orange paint on my beautiful brand-new beige carpet! We ended up calling friends who own a paint/wallpaper store and they were able to get it off of the steps...however, the biggest mess of it was on the landing and they just couldn't get it to come out. Luckily, we had extra carpet leftover so the following week the installers came and cut out the ruined part and replaced it. One cannot tell where that part is, at all. That night was the closest I have ever come to 'abusing' my child...I was so mad, I was shaking!!!! It was not funny then but we all laugh about it now!!!!

Maybe it isn't really bleached but just has a soapy/sudsy residue left in the carpet----that would make it look a lot lighter and looked "bleached." I'd just try shampooing the carpet without adding any shampoo to the water before doing anything drastic on it.

Thank you all for your ideas. I am going to shampoo it before I try to dye it. It is definitely bleached out. It's a dark green carpet and now everywhere the soap fell the carpet is an off white/yellowish color. I like the sharpe idea but I will have to see if I can get one the right color, if not then after I shampoo it, I'm going in for the dye job. After these 2 grandkids I need to just replace the carpet in the den but I'm trying to hold out and get the den and 2 of the bedrooms replaced at the same time. I think I'll just try to do it myself until then, worst case scenerio it will look better than it does now. Thanks for your advice........and yes, she is too sweet to stay mad at for too long!

I always have people call me and ask if they can spot dye their carpet with Rit dye. And I always ask them to call me back to tell me how it turns out...they never do. So, if you do use Rit or some type of fabric dye (the Sharpie for that matter) please let me know how it turns out. It sounds like the dishsoap definitely had bleach in it. I wish you lots of luck! Oh my....SOrry. I just had all new carpet in the house last year and kept the big pieces they left so will hold on to those babies. Hope it comes out. Let us know. I will keep up with this post.

If you do try to dye it yourself, please post your results. We are moving into a house that has the old gold carpet in the bedrooms, and we can't afford to replace them right now. I'm thinking about spraying them with ritz fabric dye to change the color. I have nothing to lose since I hate the gold - even black would be better!! I won't be trying this for several weeks though so would like to hear how it turns out for you if you decide to dye it. Thanks.

There is a spray-paint for car carpet to match the original colors. Maybe there is one for house carpet as well.

The car carpet one should work equally well on house carpet.

Oh man.. sometimes grands aren't so grand after all.. but they have no idea what they are doing. We have a silly 'accident' song we sing when something unexpected happens.

I think all automatic dishwasher detergent has bleach in it.. I have often used it to remove a stain from something mulit-colored.. You can put it just where you want it and it will definately bleach the stain... (or the carpet if your little one runs with the bottle.)

I had no idea they could re-dye carpet.. I'd be interested in seeing your results too..
