This morning my husband was out behind the barn with one of our dogs when he walked through some leaves and instantly a swam of wasps rose up and began stinging him.

He grabed a hose and turned the water on full force to the dog and himself getting as wet as possible then he ran like blazes to the house, all the while hundreds of wasps were still chasing him.

Our dog did not get as many stings because of his thick coat of hair and he can run faster than my hubby. He did get stung on his foot and it is red and swollen.

But poor hubby got nailed about 50 plus times by the time he got into the house.

I spent about half an hour pulling out the stingers. He has welts on him that are hugs. Got one on the eye lid and that really looks nasty.

The only thing that has stoped the pain, believe it or not, is Oral gel.

He is doing O.K. this evening inspite of the fact that he looks rather beaten up.

We will have to get a profession pest control man out to rid the property of those things. They are the ground dwellers so not so easy to find the nest. I thought they always hung from above, not so. Some are living high and others are 'low lifers'...have to find some humor in this situation.

You know, movies show these events of people being chased by bees, wasps, ect., they simply run and jump into a lake...guess hubby could have gotten into the pool...but things happen so fast all he could think of was to get into the house and away from the attackers.

I guess the moral to this story is to watch where you walk, huh!

One guy told my husband to throw gas over the area and set it on fire...never mind that not only would it destroy the wasps nest, but the barn, surrunding tree, and possibly our house and who knows, with a little luck the neighbors homes too!

I think I shall offer DH a glass of wine and see if that helps him.

Better yet, I will set a bowl of wine out near the area and perhaps the wasps will indulge then when they are relaxing we can hit them with a big stick.

Ouch! Watch him carefully next few days...hope he gets better soon.

kristen0112 07-28-2011 10:12 PM

That's awful! I am glad he seems ok. I don't think I would have made it so allergic to bees and wasps.

C.Cal Quilt Girl 07-28-2011 10:12 PM

Wow..Ouch.... double post

C.Cal Quilt Girl 07-28-2011 10:12 PM

Sewfine 07-28-2011 10:54 PM

That is awful. Watch him and make sure he is not allergic to these critters. Hope he get better soon.

Jammin' Jane 07-28-2011 10:59 PM

Yikes! You better make sure he's not allegic to them. My foot swelled up last week from horsefly bites. He must be in tremendous pain!

Annaquilts 07-28-2011 11:02 PM

Wow I did not know we had them down here. We had many in Oregon and DH used to put a glass jar over the excit entrance. Please take good care of the both of them. Ouch!

tellabella 07-28-2011 11:10 PM

1 sting hurts so much ...can't imagine 50..hope they feel better soon...good thing he is not allergic...

slk350 07-28-2011 11:26 PM

That happened to my husband and 2 kids when we had just moved into our house up north, but with yellow jackets. The people before us never raked, mowed or cleaned the huge side yard. They were outside in the early evening and one of them stepped on a under ground nest. They got stung and ran into the house, yellow jackets following. Someone told my husband to go to the hole after it got dark, pour motor oil into it and seal it off with a coffee can. It worked. Hope your husband is OK

scowlkat 07-28-2011 11:31 PM

Yellow jackets nest in the ground and when I was growing up, my dad would wait until dusk, pour gas straight into their hole and set it on fire to burn the nest.

annthreecats 07-29-2011 01:34 AM

Glad you husband is okay.

I hate to say this but those wasps can kill when they attack like that. My boss had a friend who died from one of those wasp attacks. He hit a nest with his lawn mower. I guess he was highly allergic to their stings. You should be aware of their activity in an area. I'm told you can see several flying in and out of the nest at all times when they are active during the day. Be careful. It's dangerous stuff.

Painiacs 07-29-2011 01:45 AM

How scary! Be careful! Hope he feels better soon. Not sure wine would be a good thing. It thins the blood.

plainpat 07-29-2011 02:17 AM

Poor guy! & doggie too. I'd take him to EM or Dr if anything looks infected.
I always heard about a Great uncle who was stung by bumble bees...they swarmed him & he barely made it.Take care.

SueDor 07-29-2011 02:21 AM

Keep an eye on him in the next couple days!

nyelphaba 07-29-2011 04:20 AM

Last October we 2 yellow jacket wasp nests- one outside our entrance door and the other in our basement underneath our bedroom. Very scary because suddenly for no apparent reason, my bedroom was full of wasps. Without all the details we called an exterminator and the problem was gone within 10 days. My husband and I had to sleep in the living room. GOOD LUCK! I was attacked by one nest when I tried to kill it myself. In retrospect, probably not a smart idea.

MissSandra 07-29-2011 04:30 AM

oh my gawd, I am still welted from one sting a week ago, I cant imagine your husband and dog, My daughter in her 8 month of preg, was attacked by bees and fell it was awful and yes off to er where all was ok, and the exterminators were at her home within hours, my gd commented there were bees in the bathroom, that night before, and they thought one or two had gotten in threw an open door, but they had found a way into her apartment building walls and got into the house, then i see this cute bee fabric but I never buy it ...

michelehuston 07-29-2011 05:02 AM

Wow..that can be dangerous! Sounds like you are keeping close eye on him!!!

sweet 07-29-2011 05:05 AM

My sister several years ago was out mowing the grass. She had a pair of shorts, tank top and tennis shoes and socks, bra and underwear on. She stepped on a nest in the ground. I heard her scream and I thought she had cut off her foot. She came running into the house with one shoe off, screaming, yelling 'bees'. I told her STRIP. Inside her clothes were about 25 wasps. I called the squad because she had Primary Pulmonary Hypertension. (She needed a heart lung transplant). They came, saw her meds, looked at her body and said she should go to the hospital. All told, she had over 140 stingers in her skin. Be very careful with that many stings. It can set your heart a flutter. And not in a good way. It's best to be seen by a doctor. I pray that they leave your yard. They left ours, but it was a while before we'd go out to turn off the mower. PS, after stepping on the hive in the ground, the reason the bees where attacking her was because the scent of the hive on her clothing and shoes. I killed 25 live one's as her clothes came off. My DH was in the room and he just said hurry and began swatting. She has since passed, but there is something that you can put in the hive. Contact your county extension agent.

Gramma B 07-29-2011 07:36 AM

Wow, hope hubby is feeling better! Scary and bizzare.

Reminds me of a story about my brothers. We have always had bee hives at the farm; they bring them in the spring and remove them in the fall. They are always around the house, barn, anywhere they can get water, and find flowers. They never have caused any problems.

Well, a couple of years ago, the bee hives had been removed about the week before. Evidently some of the bees were not in the hives when they removed the hives, and got violent. They attacked both of my brothers who were out in the shop at the time. Both ran to the house for cover, and of course, got several bee stings. My youngest brother found out that day he is allergic to bees. They swelled up immediately and his throat started closing up on him. He rushed to the hospital where they were waiting with the anti-venom.

Scarry!

About 15 yrs ago or so, I was getting ready for work, and kept hearing this buzzing. Thought the water softner needed resetting (we had several powef outage issues), and didn't think anymore about it.

Each morning I kept hearing this buzzing, and it started getting louder. My husband, whose hearing is not the best, started hearing it too; then, went searching.

Somehow, yellow jackets had gotten under the siding of the house, and were making nests between the mainfloor ceiling and upstairs floor. We got an exterminator out there pronto to get rid of them. Since then we have built a new house and destroyed the old.

Glassquilt 07-29-2011 07:59 AM

Scary

amma 07-29-2011 08:44 AM

Oh No! I am so glad that it didn't turn out worse than it did!! Poor DH and furbaby :(

wolfkitty 07-29-2011 08:46 AM

I feel bad for your husband and dog!!! I was out cutting wood after my husband had died. (I was alone.) I went to work on an old log pile, and apparently disturbed a nest of some kind of bee in the pile. I did not know that they built nest in the ground either, at that time. I didn't stop to think about it, but ran into the house immediately and slammed the door. I managed to get away with only 3 stings, but they were following me. Thank God I wasn't allergic, as the house was a ways away from town. I know you will take good care of your husband and dog. I hate bees!!!

clynns 07-29-2011 09:44 AM

I can say I'm pertrified of bees. I don't like anything that flies. But bees or the kind in particular. I moved to the country about 16 years ago and since have a great respect for honey bees. Without them pollenatng our crops we would NOT have food. I respect them, but I still have no use for yellow jackets, wasps, mud dwellers and bumble bees. Since living in the country my knowledge of different flying insects has increased. There is a different in all of the above. We need bees. Honey bees. The rest of them I'd like to get rid of.

MrsM 07-29-2011 09:52 AM

I was told to put pennies on the site of the stings for 15 minutes. The copper stops the pain.

Carol's Quilts 07-29-2011 10:02 AM

So sorry that happened. Hope they will both feel better soon. Has the dr. given your DH anything for pain?

I've heard that attacks like that with so many stings can cause an allergic reaction to future stings. Don't know if that is true or not, but your dr. would probably know.

Stitchit123 07-29-2011 12:00 PM

Keep an eye on both DH and pooch for delayed re-actions Nephew was OK for a day then ended up in the hospital the poison had a delayed re-action- Respritory Failure-is common

iowabelle 07-30-2011 06:09 PM

I'm glad your husband is better today, I read that news first and then came to see what happened to him and the dog. (Poor doggie!)

Your husband's pyromaniac buddy sounds like my father. One time he got the bright idea to burn the grass in the yard because that's the natural thing to do. Darn near took out our house. :(
