This is my marriage and all my friends marriages to a tee.

I didn't want cats. My wife wanted cats. So we compromised and got five cats.

fruitloop 08-16-2017 01:36 PM

I read this to DH and he said yep that's our marriage too!

lynnie 08-16-2017 01:45 PM

purrfect!!!

SusieQOH 08-16-2017 01:46 PM

Omg, that's too funny!
It was the reverse with us- and now I can't live w/o my furbabies!!

Jane Quilter 08-16-2017 01:51 PM

thats not funny.......it is too close to home.

jokir44 08-16-2017 02:15 PM

Mmm-hmm. My husband didn't want dogs in the house and no cats at all. That was 3 inside cats and 6 house dogs ago. :D The wonderful thing is that he has adored them all. This has been over almost 40 years, not all at once.

Nammie to 7 08-16-2017 02:17 PM

My husband had never had indoor pets - at one point we had 7 cats. We are down to 6 now.

When we had 6 dachshunds, I told my husband it was his fault. I'd never had a dachshund until I met him or multiple dogs. He wanted a dachshund and then decided that one needed a buddy and it just sort of escalated. His fault completely :D

GingerK 08-16-2017 02:25 PM

We had been cat (my love) and dog (his love) parents/servants for more than 30 years. But about 10 years ago we decided to no longer replace our babies and downpetsize. In 2016 we lost our sweet Molly dog and my darling Chester cat--my avatar that I just cannot replace. And on Jan 2 of this year my dear Flash died in my arms. I like the freedom we have achieved but I miss having a purring hairball curled up in my lap. Thank goodness we occasionally sit the Grandpuppy or DH would probably sneak a barker into the house.

I've always wanted a dachshund- hopefully one day I will. I used to babysit for a family who had one and he and I were buddies- he kept me company all evening. Love them!

Boston1954 08-16-2017 02:55 PM

Halfway off topic. I have had two Dachshunds. The first lived to be 12 1/2 and the second was nearly 16 when he left me. If you want a dog for quite a while....the smaller the breed, the longer the lifespan.

Jim and I both love dogs and cats. We have 4 cats and a dog right now.

Jingle 08-16-2017 05:04 PM

Over the years we have had About 14-15 dogs and cats. My husband never had any pets and I didn't either. I have a soft heart and soft head. All but one cat has been strays or feral cats. The dogs I bought except for three. Now we have 2 small dogs and two cats. He didn't want any of them but, he has taken to all of them.

patsan 08-16-2017 05:05 PM

Thanks for the chuckle.

Joset 08-17-2017 04:07 AM

same here i grew up with house cat and i have always had a house cat so we have a house cat ha ha

Sewnoma 08-17-2017 05:51 AM

I wanted a kitten, he wanted a bird. So he got a bird and somehow I got a puppy. :D

Oh well. Close enough. LOL

maviskw 08-17-2017 07:50 AM

We just spent the weekend with our cat and Daughter's dog in the house. Not good! The cat was just fine, he gets along with anyone/anything. But the dog gets along with no one. She is not allowed in Doggie Park because she picks fights with the other dogs. So one or the other had to be outside. (The dog was just itching to go chase those cows across the road, so she had to be firmly tethered.) When we wanted both of them to be inside, one had to go to jail. The dog's jail was Daughter's bedroom or the cat was locked into the laundry room.

purplefiend 08-17-2017 10:42 AM

At one time we had a mama cat and her 7 kittens...they all lived in our bedroom. Shortly after I became allergic to cats. :( Now we have 4 dogs, only 1 of the four doesn't give me allergy issues. None of them are allowed in the bedroom.

fruitloop 08-17-2017 01:35 PM

I think most happy fun marriages will be able to sub the word cat to most anything else. LOL

My little guy in my avatar is Cash. Cash is 17 years old now and going strong. I've had one live to be 18 and a couple live to me 16. My friend had one that lived to be 20! They are pretty long lived.

Stitchnripper 08-17-2017 02:04 PM

Mr. Stitchnripper and I have always been on the same page re: pets. We have had a lot of cats and one dog together. Now we have fish. The Betta is named Bob (compliments of 9 year old grandson). We have the grand puppies with us now but they will be going home tomorrow or Saturday I think. We will miss them except for first thing in the morning when they get us up to go out.

it sounds like the dog needs some firm training.......I would be very leery having a dog that was anti-social....

This dog is not anti-social with people. But she must have grown up having never seen another animal. She is actually a therapy dog and goes with our daughter on rounds to see Hospice clients. She does love people, just not other animals; I should have made that more clear. She is much too old to change now.

Before me DH was a lifelong strictly dog person, I can take credit for is new found love. He loves, loves, loves his 3 kit cats. When I tell his family how much he loves his cats they look at me like I am half crazy. Lol!! They cannot fathom that DD can really love a cat.

SusieQOH 08-18-2017 09:27 AM

I love posts about cats and dogs. They are always so funny!!! I'm a four-legged lover for sure.
Love all your stories :D

This is the second time I read this thread. The first time I called a friend with an animal rescue and read it to her. We laughed and laughed. This time it seemed even funnier. I love this quilting forum because it's like visiting with a bunch of friends. I find myself with about 16 cats right now but need to find good adoptive families for about 10 of them. I took 2 moms having kittens to save their lives and a litter the people were moving and going to throw the kittens out into the trailer park, "someone will feed them." They were 3 months old and the baby only weighed 18 ounces. They are all healthy and well and I love them all so much but I am getting old and need to find them younger families. I am alone and have enjoyed your pet stories so much. And the 'weird' fabric post was a hoot also. Thank you for your friendship.

I hope those people have nothing but bad luck and are miserable for the rest of their lives! How despicable can someone be!
Thank you ByThePiece for your kind heart. I am a rescue pet person too. No store bought pets for us.

I live in a area where stray cats seem to show up. When one shows up I entice it on my screen porch, put in carrier and then take to vet to be spayed or neutered. If it stays around then at least no babies. I keep cat food out every day year round. DH says I'm feeding the raccoons but that's okay too.

Sewnoma 08-22-2017 01:57 PM

When I was a kid we had a cat that had kittens, and my grandmother found a stray mom-cat with kittens in her trailer park that were about the same age and brought her to us to take care of. My mom was mad, but my sister and I were thrilled! Our cat had seven kittens, the stray had four more, so we had 11 kittens! Both mom-cats were black, and they didn't seem to care whose kittens were whose and raised them all together. So cute. All these black and white kittens, except three orange tabbies.

We found homes for all of them, despite my sister & I pleading to keep them all!

I've also reread them and read them to my husband. He cracked up!!! You have such a big heart- I wish I could rescue some of those kitties. We are down to 2, 3 died within a year and a half but they were sisters, so they got old at the same time. So hard :(

zennia 08-23-2017 09:07 AM

Showed this to my husband. He laughed. So true. We had 5 at one time now we only have 3.

Yup. Long haired dachshund. There are also wire haired dachshunds that have a sort of terrier/schnauzer look

onestrokeartist 11-29-2017 12:52 PM

My mother always hated cats, don't know why, she said they would jump up on counters and that they were dirty. I believed her. I moved in with my then to be husband, and his cat promptly pooped on some of my clothes that I had been unpacking. Funnily enough, I didn't scream blue murder. After all, it's a little critter after all. Anyways, in the space of being married 27 years we have had a number of kitties, at one spot in our lives, no kitties as I began to get allergies. Then the allergies stopped. So our most recent kitty is Crescent a white and black. Our most affectionate adorable kitty Maxi just passed away. We had him for about 14 years. I still cry when I think about him. He had a tumour in his mouth, we tried to keep him as long as we could, but could not bear to see him suffer. he was a Russian Blue. Hope he is having a happy time in kitty-kat heaven.

My husband knew that I came with cats and/or dogs or not at all. Now he loves our cats as much as I do.

Same with us only the reverse. I didn't like cats and my husband loved them. That was about 8 cats ago and I am totally in love with them!
