Everyone has one... Mine is people not using the search button

It really is very simple ... It is at the top of the page right next to the Live Chat ...."Home | Quilting Newsletter | Live Chat | Search |"

Easy to use, here is a link to it :
http://www.quiltingboard.com/search.jsp

Go ahead and play with it , you might be surprised what you find here already

If you want there is an advance search option also , and this can be accessed from the "search" area :
http://www.quiltingboard.com/search.jsp

If you know a topic has been discussed , use the search to try and locate it , before posting a question looking for it . Some questions keep getting posted over and over again. Some discussions have been beat to death, but keep being presented as a "new topic"

OK Off my stool now... Have a GREAT day

Candace 07-14-2010 07:07 AM

Thanks, Sharon. Sometimes I feel like a broken record reminding people to use it.

amma 07-14-2010 07:10 AM

I really love the advanced search feature, it makes it much easier to find a topic from a member, specific area, etc...

Search picks up specific key words very well now, since Admin did some refinements a while back :D:D:D

sandpat 07-14-2010 07:13 AM

Yup...great feature, I use it all the time!

mlaceruby 07-14-2010 07:14 AM

I agree!
and I have only been here a month!
another peeve or maybe a question?
can topics be deleted in the classifieds section?

I have seen several over the last few days that have new posts(and are then at the top of the list) that are from several months ago.
even the ones that the topic has been retitled as closed or sold
so if you do a search it brings these topics up
seems like alot of wasted space on the board

ktbb 07-14-2010 07:15 AM

sharon, I agree with you and I'll add a variation to it.

My pet peeve is folks who don't really read a query/post and automatically give the poster information what they think is asked for ...a very common response is "use search" or "google it" when the actual question may have been something that can't be answered by just a search. I've seen many, many posts that could have been answered by doing a search....BUT there are also those questions where more information is asked and we (yes, I include myself in this) sometimes read what we think they say instead of what they really say. OK, I've said it, now I'll move on! Thanks.

Boston1954 07-14-2010 07:18 AM

I have been guilty of this in the past. (slap my hand) Now, I try to ask things that have not been asked before. One specific thing that gets me is batting. I think it has been discussed at least 5 times just this year.....

QBeth 07-14-2010 07:21 AM

bowtucks Bowtucks BOWTUCKS up the whazooie!!

Okay, I'm done. :-)

Melinda in Tulsa 07-14-2010 07:29 AM

I don't understand why some people have a problem with people asking questions about topics that have been previously discussed. I don't, nor do I use the search button that often. A person sometimes just *needs* to pose a question in their own words. Besides people, the more questions asked, the more active this forum. Give the newbies a break. It makes the board seem unfriendly when people won't answer questions and just say *use the search button* If you are sick of a topic, then just don't read it. JMO

patricej 07-14-2010 07:30 AM

my pet peeve #1 happens to be publicly posted pet peeves. what starts out as humorous reminders to each other can get ugly quicker'n you kin hit the send.

Peeve nicely, children. maybe this time we can get it right and have some chuckles.

;-)

Pet Peeve #2 - when i am the one who goofs.

I was a peever just the other day. i composed and posted the perfect answer ... to the wrong question!!! i had to delete myself.

WANNABEE 07-14-2010 07:34 AM

never knew search had advanced options. thanx

Been there and embarrassed myself too LMBO
One or two missed/misunderstood key words can change everything

DebraK 07-14-2010 07:59 AM

maybe we should call this "my number one suggestion" instead of a "peeve". More flies with honey and all that ;-)

Conniequilts 07-14-2010 08:13 AM

Yes, please be careful or you will make people afraid to use the board so as not to upset others.

Sometimes I do run a search and find nothing but later someone is able to link me to another area because they ran their search another way.

sharon b 07-14-2010 08:16 AM

I can do that  Thanks for the suggestion...

Ditto. It should scare a lurker from becoming a Member or stop new Members from posting all together for fear of making a mistake. We all have peeves, but is this the place to type them for all to see? Sure I too get peeved, but I just blow it off or go on. :D The Search feature is great! Thank You for it. It does sound a bit unfriendly to answer a question with "Use the Search or Google it". Just wording it kindly could make the difference. Short of time to answer, may be why there are so many of these answers. Don't know.

amma 07-14-2010 08:36 AM

I believe the intent of this topic is to help members become aware of the search feature here and how to use it, not to stop questions from being asked :D:D:D We all love to learn new things, and asking/answering questions is very good way of accomplishing this :D:D:D

Members may have also missed Admin's announcement over refining the search function for us and adding the advanced search feature too. He has spent a lot of time making it easier for us to find topics/subjects now :D:D:D

JanetM 07-14-2010 08:36 AM

This really isn't a pet peeve, but I think the Search Button would be used more if members would title their threads more carefully.

It is difficult to do a search on a specific topic when the results you see are one word titles that reveal little about the thread content.

Your title above is a good example of how to title a thread. If I just saw the title I would have a good idea of the content.

skothing 07-14-2010 08:38 AM

Thanks for the help. I needed it too.

There are a lot of bells & whistles on this website. Unless you spend a lot of time, it takes a while to learn how to use some of them. I'm a retired librarian, so I usually "search" to get my own answers before I ask on a board like this one. I find it amusing that quilters ask a question on the Quiltingboard just to have someone else "search" the website or Google to provide the answer.

I find it hard to not just be a lurker as others seem to have unlimited time to make comments. Much useful information is passed along, but this seems to be a social outlet for many.

At least I discovered the "Unread Topics" link at the top of the Message Board. However, it would be nice if the "Topics" gave a clue as to what they were about as I'm sure I'm not the only one with limited time to go through the messages.

bearisgray 07-14-2010 10:19 AM

I need to remind myself that what is "old and known" to me, is "new and not known" to others.

wvdek 07-14-2010 10:24 AM

I'm sure there are folks who are just plain scared to do something they know nothing about. Some of those buttons and what they can offer are intimidating for people who may still be computer illiterate. When I do a reply, I try to educate the person about the button/buttons.

How many of you have figured out the Watched/Unwatched button? Took me forever.

Patrice has saved my bacon a few times. Thanks for your patience and educating me.

pookie ookie 07-14-2010 10:30 AM

Some people like to engage in a current conversation on an oft repeated subject matter. This has always been the case online. It's also always been the case that others will come along and say something like, "google it!" So, maybe what people really want to do is peeve each other out. :0D

The stellar search function was the first thing I loved about this place but it's not for everyone. Research v. conversational opportunities. It's all good.

GrammaNan 07-14-2010 12:25 PM

Please don't be afraid to ask questions!!!! Sometimes it is the contact with others that is more important than the answer to a question. I will answer anyone's question if I can even if it is the same question over and over again. If you have a question and are too timid to post, please PM me. If I don't have the answer, I am sure I know someone who will.

Please: Don't sweat the petty and don't pet the sweaty.

I don't know where I would be today without the contact that I have had with others on this board. It has been so much more to me than a quilting tutorial!!!!!!!!!!!

King's Daughter 07-14-2010 12:47 PM

I frequently use the Search function and have found it very helpful; haven't tried advanced search yet. That being said, even if someone asks a question that's been asked several times before, there could be different responses than have already been given...new insights maybe, new ways of doing things. Just cause the question is "old" doesn't mean all the answers will be the same "old" answers!

One thing that kind of did annoy me a little was on a swap I'm involved in, posters kept asking the same questions over and over, instead of going to the first page and clicking on the link that had all the info.

dsb38327 07-14-2010 01:28 PM

 #1: Guilty as charged.
(1/4" seam allowance post by yours truly. There are lots but I had not met Mr. Search Field yet (I guess because I still asked.) I have read the responses to my post a zillion times, I have also used the search field and read many of the other (1/4" seam allowance) posts many times. I enjoy the many views and ideas. The same thing can be said different ways and we learn from some versions more than we learn from others. Thousands of others will learn better from the versions we pass over or didn't grasp.
#2: Guilty as charged.
(I forgot what #2 was.)
Just teasing. We all mean well and love helping each other. It is like a race to Mr. Search Field or Mr. Google to see who can find it first.
#3:
Please encourage everyone to be more specific when they title their post. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell your Quiltingboard friends. "Guess What" will deprive me of the information in the post because I will pass by that post. Sorry, I just don't have time and I really hate to miss out on good information.

What irratates one pleases another. There are thousands of us, many females (lots of raging hormones). Let's be patient with each other.
All members need to read the rules Admin has posted to keep us safe and make our Quiltingboard experience better. That being said I would like to ask a question:
 No, I won't do it.

i, too, have my wicked moments.

Anyone care for ice cream? It is chocolate chip.

Triple dip here with dark choc. syrup.

kathyd 07-14-2010 05:38 PM

No thanks, I just had mine. Choc/vanilla swirl with crushed Oreos on top. Yummm!!

mlaceruby 07-14-2010 05:40 PM

Peanut butter passion!
my blood sugar will be up for a week!

sandpat 07-14-2010 06:07 PM

Oh...just ate mine and enjoyed every bite!!

Ok..now I've just got to say that I thought this topic was just to let people know how awesome the"search" feature is on the board. I don't want people to quit asking questions and its NOT newbies who are asking. Lots of times the newbies know a better way..there are many who haven't been a member of the board for long, but have been quilting forever...so they can add something never before mentioned!

jamh 07-15-2010 06:16 AM

I love the search button! LOL I hate asking for help!!
