Here are some tatted pieces I have been doing. Mostly learning the ropes of needle tatting, and practice with my shuttles.

Wow! You are doing great! My grandmother tatted, but I never got her to teach me. It is something I want to learn one of these days.

mom-6 02-13-2011 09:07 PM

Beautiful!

I've tried several times to learn tatting, but apparently there's more to it than the directions in the book indicate. I do ok with the first tiny little circle with the loopy things sticking out, but can't get past that successfully.

Leota 02-13-2011 09:09 PM

Pretty :D
That's on my bucket list to learn how to do...

sewwhat85 02-13-2011 09:10 PM

I love and admire tatting! I just don't have the patience or talent to do it! Beautiful work.

Gerbie 02-14-2011 12:31 AM

You tatting is just lovely. I have always wanted to learn how. It looks so neat. I purchased thread, book and shuttle several years ago, and for the life of me I can't figure this out. I never before had a problem with any type of pattern or directions but I just can't seem to get the tatting directions or at least they don't work for me. Love your projects. Please be sure to teach others as it is really a dying art I think. I have not found anyone around here yet that knows how to tat, still looking though.

sheilainoz 02-14-2011 03:03 AM

lovely work ... it is a dying art ... I was taught a long time ago by some lovely ladies. Its suprisingly easy once you get the hang of it but it takes a long time to actually make something which ppl cant understand

SueDor 02-14-2011 03:15 AM

Beautiful work!

ptquilts 02-14-2011 04:14 AM

DH wanted to learn to tat and we downloaded instructions but neither of us could figure it out. I guess you have to learn from a live person. We couldn't find one of those.
So how did you learn? Beautiful work, BTW!

CarrieAnne 02-14-2011 04:15 AM

How pretty!

patt013 02-14-2011 05:15 PM

Hi all. I've been tatting for over 30 years. Have a website with free tatting instructions: http://www.tattingjustforyou.com and recently started a blog with free basic patterns: http://tattypatty.blogspot.com

The only trick to tatting is in learning the doublestitch and realizing that the shuttle thread has to go around the thread on your hand and not tangle with it. Unfortunately, both right and wrong stitches look the same but if you tat wrong you cannot pull the thread to close the ring.

hperttula123 02-14-2011 05:22 PM

It's beautiful!!! I've never learned how to do that and I don't think I ever will.

I really like how you put the two colors together. Just wonderful!

Midwestmary 02-14-2011 06:01 PM

I love tatting! I've done a little shuttle tatting - is needle tatting easier? I eventually gave it up - just drove me nuts trying to pick out those knots when I made a mistake. Thanks for sharing - your work is lovely.

Beffy_Boo 02-14-2011 06:08 PM

Very pretty! I bought a book to learn how to do it. My uncle loved to tat but he was too embarassed to show his work or do it in front of us. My aunt would proudly show us what he had done when he was at work. I'm so glad that for the most part crafts are no longer gender specific and men doing traditional women's crafts are no longer considered sissy-la-las.

CloverPatch 02-14-2011 06:14 PM

Okay, when I read this i expected to open a thread about tattos! Too funny.
I was taught tatting years ago, but don't remember thing one about how to do it.
Your stuff looks really good.

SassySewer53 02-14-2011 06:20 PM

There is not a standard notation for tatting, however tatters are trying to establish a notation system for patterns. I honestly think the key is in knowing how to hold the work in order to execute the stitch/design elements to a pattern. Also, it helps not to let your mistakes intimidate effort to learn a new stitch or skill. Once you get past that, there is no end to what can be learned with tatting. In fact, I had to get beyond this level, too. I hope you will learn sometime. Ronda

SassySewer53 02-14-2011 06:22 PM

You know, I find that men can be the worse critics! Yet they do very beautiful work. Glad to have male input. Gender does not bother me one bit!

SassySewer53 02-14-2011 06:26 PM

Oh, thanks, Sharon B! I have tatted stitches basically for about 20 yrs now. I am just breaking out of my comfort zone to learn more skills in making the tatted laces with colors, beads, and other embellishes using the tatting. This was my first try at 2 color tatting. Normally, I work one color only--generally offwhite or ecru for heirlooming and antique reproduction costumes for dolls.

When I was a freshman in college one of my roommates tatted. She would keep a shuttle and bobbin in her pocket and tat while we waited for class to start. She said she was making lace for her wedding gown. I lost touch so don't know if that happened or not.

SassySewer53 02-14-2011 07:01 PM

I use an old eyeglass case that is hardshelled to store my shuttle work. It is so portable that I love doing it while waiting at dr appts and any other excuse to make lace! I hope your friend got to make her wedding gown lace. You can really make beautiful things for weddings with tatting. Thanks for posting here.

SassySewer53 02-20-2011 09:45 PM

Took me about 2 days.

SassySewer53 02-21-2011 12:55 PM

gorgeous work sassy how long does one of those take

Thanks, BB! It usually takes me 2 days. If I stay on task, I can make it in a day. I enjoy doing it, and it really isn't hard to do.
