My daughter, who is off in her own apartment now, got a call from a neighbor that she had found our cat Stinkerbell's collar. We took this little guy and his brother in as feral kittens. His brother has calmed down a lot, but Stinker was still about half wild, scared of everything, and not very friendly. My daughter spent a lot of time taming him, and he was actually a pretty sweet cat, though a little squirrely--we used to say that he was kind of autistic. He and his brother both insisted on going outside on a regular basis. The last time we saw him was Monday night when we came home from dinner and he was sitting on the front porch, but wouldn't come in.

Well, when my daughter called our younger daughter to tell her about them finding his collar, which was kind of a mess, she didn't tell her the whole story. They found him, too, and he had been badly mangled by a coyote. He's the second cat we've lost to coyotes--I hate those things! My older daughter is the most upset, because he was really her cat even though she no longer lives with us. Whenever she comes home the first thing she does is go look for him and his brother. Since she moved out he's kind of taken to me a little more, and I sure will miss him. It always felt like such an honor when he would rub up against my legs or ask for some petting, because it was so rare. I'm sure going to miss the little guy!

So sorry about your kitty.

In our neighborhood here in So Cal. People do not let their cats out due to the coyotes. They will be gone in a day. We even watch our dog all though we are in a newer subdivision all fenced. They jump the fence no problem. We have the Padres national forest behind us and Angeles Natl Forest behind and across from us. We are on the I-5 right between the two.

We still like being where there is some wildlife LA is so congested.

I remember when I lived in Laguna Hills a long time ago, I was walking my dog who kept looking over his shoulder. I finally looked back and there were 2 coyotes following us. They never did bother us. We could hear them howling at night. That was before Laguna Hills was so built up, as all of So CA is now. Pretty much why we live in Illinois now. Sounds like you do live in a great area!

poor poor kitty.... He is in Kitty Heaven now where there are no bad coyotes.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat being lost. Our cat of 17 years went outside to potty-he was an inside cat and only out on a leash usually, but he got so bad with arthritis he refused to use his litter box even though i brought it upstairs and put it by our bedroom door, he wanted outside to potty. my husband let him out at 2 a.m. to potty and something got him quickly and quietly. broke his back, we took him to the vet for one last time.
we now have three cats. a momma cat and her two kittens who came to live in our backyard. we let them into our garage at night and needless to say, into our house later on. one kitten is still slightly feral. he. excuse me, she (i thought it was boy till taken to the Vet) refused to come into the house till long after the mom and sister were acclimated. i'm just now getting to where i can pick her up a bit off the floor to kiss and pet her. she's very skittish but wants love a lot.
coyotes are losing their regular hunting places, so all pets must be kept indoors. not an easy thing to do at times i know.
your cat had a good life and lots of love i'm sure. remember the good times hon.

what a bummer :(

Shemjo 05-22-2009 09:49 AM

Sew sorry about the loss of your pet. I have inside cats, but one got out lastfall, but she comes to be fed every day. When I don't see her, I worry that something has happened, even though the food disappears. She was always very standoffish, and there is no way I can get close to her to catch her. She runs off when I open the inside door! She does "talk" to me, and watches from a distance. I saw her this morning, so it is a good day!
I know how the loss leaves you. Grieve and love the one left.

zyxquilts 05-22-2009 01:21 PM

Oh Harmony, I'm so sorry to hear about Stinker. They do manage to sneak into our hearts when we aren't looking, don't they?

SaraSewing 05-22-2009 01:36 PM

My year old goes outside - can't stand the potty pan. She even got a mouse yesterday. Better dead on the grass than in my house! But I sure worry about her. Worry both about other cats & fights, cars, and also the unforseen, like coyotes.

bearisgray 05-22-2009 01:43 PM

Sorry your cat got killed. They leave a big hole in one's heart when they are gone.

I let my cat out too, and I always worry about him until he comes back in.
I've tried keeping him in, but he whines so much, that my husband might do him harm :-|

It's like waiting for the teenagers to get themselves home at night!

Tink's Mom 05-22-2009 02:27 PM

So sorry to hear about Stinkerbelle. I can tell by the name that this kitty was a bit of a handful.

If you happen to see some of your fabric being moved around rather playfully.....you know that Stinkerbelle is still inspecting Quilts......

Marcia 05-22-2009 04:19 PM

I am so sorry. Whacko or not, I know you loved him.

barnbum 05-22-2009 05:33 PM

Awww--it's amazing how much we miss them, huh? I'm sorry.
