Name your favorite summer food indulgences

Summer is but a few short days away. That being said, what can't you live without at least once a season. Please make mine root beer floats, fresh corn on the cob, vine ripe tomatoes, and marinated BBQ chicken.

QuiltnNan 06-13-2012 02:36 PM

gotta have fresh strawberry shortcake with home-made biscuits at least once. hopefully, there will be real whipped cream on top :)

aronel 06-13-2012 02:41 PM

Any food from the grill, watermelon, fried green tomatoes, fresh ripe tomatoes, corn on the cob. I'd better stop - I'm getting hungry!

DogHouseMom 06-13-2012 02:48 PM

I don't have to think about this for more than a second. Corn on the Cob.

We soak it (green ears and all) in water all day long (a large bucket with corn standing on end). Once nice and wet, we put it on the grill set to low (green ears and all). We had a special can that was 18" tall and only about 6" diameter. We filled it almost full with water then dropped a stick (or more) of butter in it then put that on the grill to heat and melt the butter. When all was done, we pull the ears back and as they cool very quickly, we'd then use them as a "handle", twist the silk off the top, then holding the handle we dip it into the can of water with the butter floating on the top. Easiest way to butter an entire ear of corn. Salt. Eat. Repeat.

As a kid, I held the record for most ears of corn eaten in one sitting ... 9.

My love of corn on the cob was notorious and there wasn't a family on the block that could grill the stuff without inviting me over for at least one ear. I'd smell it and come anyway - invited or not, regardless if they had other company or not.

All you've said so far and SMORES! We have to toast marshmellows over glowing coals!

tesspug 06-13-2012 03:40 PM

Peaches off my tree. Grill 'em, slice 'em over homemade ice cream, put 'em in morning cereal. But the best is right off the tree with the juice running down your chin.

Glenda m 06-13-2012 03:45 PM

Amen to all of those. You named all of my favorites, and I'm not even a Southern girl. I am partial to a good macaroni salad, too.

tsnana2000 06-13-2012 05:33 PM

Watermelon!!!!!

barny 06-13-2012 05:37 PM

We live in Dallas and already eating tomatoes. I can't quit. I eat them until I get blisters in my mouth. "Good son" raises tomatoes and squash and okra and I'm getting my fill of them too. Yummmmm. We have our back yard fence planted with tomatoes. Our dirt is terrible. One batch is about all we'll get. No fall tomatoes at all.

Greenheron 06-13-2012 06:55 PM

BERRIES! Strawberries, black raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, red raspberries. And all of the above,:o

Pam B 06-13-2012 07:10 PM

marthe brault-hunt 06-14-2012 04:08 AM

Lobster burger , raspberries, bite a tomato fresh from the vine and a large glass of iced tea

Quilt-Till-U-Wilt 06-14-2012 04:11 AM

Fresh corn on the cob, watermelon and home grown tomatoes. We have a farm close to us and they sell just picked corn every Sunday. It's the beat I ever ate.

Edie 06-14-2012 05:12 AM

You are good QuiltnNan!!!!! Just made home made biscuits for our strawberry shortcake. Trick I learned from the Mother.....Slice your shortcake in half, zap it for about 30 seconds. Then lift the top, put on the strawberries, cover it, put on more strawberries and, of course, real whipped cream. There is something about the hot biscuit and the cold strawberries that puts you in Minnesota summer Heaven, right??????

My very first thought was fresh peach ice cream from the peach tree in the backyard----if the squirrels don't get them first. If they do, there's a great fruit and veggies stand right down the road.

deenatoo 06-14-2012 06:40 AM

How do you do the lobster burger?

Tomatoes fresh from vine...ummmm. Iced tea is a year round thing for me...24-7, 365....

gollytwo 06-14-2012 12:37 PM

When it gets very, very hot - watermelon.

Debbr63 06-14-2012 12:54 PM

Graeters peach ice cream only made in July and August ...

ptquilts 06-14-2012 01:11 PM

I vote for peaches, nectarines, unfortunately I have to get them at the store. I love it when they are so juicy you have to eat them over the sink.

Oh yeah ... forgot about those. I don't eat tomatoes from the store so summer and my own tomatoes are a real bonus for me.

BTW - For you tomato lovers ... try growing "Black Krim" tomato. OH SO DELICIOUS!! One of the best tomatoe's I've ever eaten, slightly salty flavor!!

Iraxy 06-14-2012 07:18 PM

Tesspug hit it right on the target. Mmm, peaches. But, since I can't find that, I settle for Jamaica. It is hibiscus flowers that are dried and you can make a strong, sweet, tart tea. Icy cold after coming inside from the heat, can't be beat! That and vanilla ice cream with fresh peaches. Yum!

deenatoo 06-15-2012 07:49 AM

That sounds delicious!! I could eat some right now....

Things that mean summer to me: wilted lettuce salad (with bacon and onions), and cucumbers and onions in vinegar and oil. Also, corn and tomatoes are so close to our hearts (transplants from the Midwest), but to get quality up here in Alaska is sometimes rare. We cherish good produce!
