We are planning a move from MD to NC early in August and I'm getting discouraged reading reviews. Does anyone have a company that they'd recommend? I have one vote for United Van Lines, so far.

Where are you reading reviews? What are you wanting from the company? Full service, including packing, or just a door to door transport. We used Two Men and a Truck to move locally 4 years ago and I was very happy with their service. I also know of a local moving company that I'd highly recommend, but I don't know if he does out of state moves. A good friend of mine also owns a moving company locally and he moved me to VA 20 years ago and did an awesome job. When I contracted him for a local move (just a few miles), I had nothing but complaints! He apologized, gave me a slight discount and said that his local help was not as good as the long distance help when I commented on the difference in service compared to the VA move. I'll be happy to PM you the company names if you'd like.

United has moved us twice in the past. Did a good job.

Allied moved my daughter but wouldn't recommend them.

Bekins Van Lines, my husband has worked for them for years. it really isn't about the van lines in particular. Its about the mover you get. they make your experience. :D

DO not use Bekins. We used them when we retired from N.J. to Az and they lost a LOT of stuff, damaged a lot of furniture and refused to pay for any of it. I had to go to a local TV station here in AZ in order to get some monetary relief. BUT they still refused to have someone come out and repair any of the furniture. This is a terrible company. It was the corporate office of the President that refused to settle with us until channel 12 here got involved.

We have moved several times because of business and never had a problem. But the first time we used Bekins - it was a nightmare.

I agree that the individual mover is as, if not more, important than the company. Finding someone local to the beginning of your move, that you can check out with references, (maybe check Craigslist?) and that you can meet beforehand will likely be the best plan.

The driver will likely be the loader/mover for your stuff and will also unload on the other end. Having a chance to meet him ahead (not often easy), make a connection on moving day, having his cell number for contact *during* the trip, and discussing thoroughly your concerns before he supervises the loading, is the way to head off many problems.

Provide drinks, a sandwich lunch, a sweet treat, and plenty of paper towels at the kitchen sink for wiping sweaty brows and hands.

Usually refrigerators are not moved. I use them to store all the "extra" items I'll need during loading day that I don't want anyone to pack up by mistake. :D

Do you want a company that packs for you? If not, try Googling You Pack It, we ship it. They bring a container to you, gives you 3 days to pack it, call them up, they'll come and pick it up, let them know when you'll be at your new place, they'll deliver it, you have 3 days to unpack, call them up, they'll come pick it up. We moved 500 miles and a full trailer for $1400.
