Need some advice please - altering a dress

I realize this isn't a quilt-related question but many on this board are very skilled seamtresses (kuddos to you!!) - -

I bought a dress that has a, for lack of a better description, under slip then has a beautiful over dress, kind of sheer but it's way too long on me. My first thought was to lob off approx. 10" off the bottom of the over dress & sew a new seam, however, that would eliminate much of the pretty print on the over dress. Any suggestions???

You could possibly take some of the excess from the waist area and reshape the sides so that you don't lose the print on the bottom. I just looked at the website at the dress. My suggestion is to undo the neck area from the slip. Cut off what you don't want at the top of the sheer dress at the shoulders. Re-shape your neckline, sew the shoulder seams and undo the side seams to redo the armholes. Re-attach the sheer dress to the slip. That is how I would do it.

Rather than reconstructing the top of the dress, I'd trim close to the edge of the design pattern, and then move that all up onto the plain green part and applique it on. You may not be able to move up an entire 10", but move up all you can and then you can trim a little bit off the bottom. With the over dress being sheer, you can get away with wearing it a little longer than you normally would.

Thanks, ladies. I appreciate your input.

Or you could cut off the bottom very carefully and make a full collar from it.
