My son's soon to be ex..just officially moved out of their house this morning. I had made them a quilt this past Jan(he had me make it with her favorite colors and a tulip pattern). It is much to hot for him (I made it with poly fill and flannel backing). He asked me..if he should keep the quilt and I am not sure what to say. Thats my first question..what would you all do???

My second question is...I need ideas for a quilt to make for him now..so it is not so hot. The poly fill I used was called high loft poly batting. How do you make a summer type quilt?? What pattern can I use for a guy and made with all blues??

Thanks everyone for any and all help I get with this matter.

Let her keep it, it was made for her really. Best to make a new one just for him.

I agree.

Let her keep it

I agree, he may not want the reminder of it in the room.

Check out some blue quilts on the QB. Maybe you will find inspiration.

I have to agree, let her keep it.

I agree with the others - tell him to give the quilt to her.

The poly batt is why it is so warm. Use one of the all cotton ones to keep it cooler. And I think he was asking what to do to find out if you would be hurt if he gave it to her. It sounds as if it was more hers than his.

ditto

Sounds like he wants her to have it and was questioning to see if you would have hurt feelings if he gave it to her. Sensitive Son!

Let her keep the quilt. I use Hobbs or Warm and Natural cotton batting. It is thin and light weight. I don't like a heavy quilt or too warm.

donnaree59 07-05-2011 07:03 PM

I'd let her take it so he wouldn't have it lying around (or have to 'hide' it) to stop the bad memories... Make him a new one for him to enjoy himself....

Sadiemae 07-05-2011 07:10 PM

I agree also!

The quilt was a gift and he obviously meant it for her. IMHO

I use warm and natural/white in my quilts for my sons and they love it. Warm enough, but not too warm. For daily use I made a simple 4 patch with a camping themed pattern square in between. This is for everyday use and is very loved. Your son will love whatever you create for him.

I would tell him that you will support what ever decision he decides to make and that you will make him another one. I know that my kids would keep it since I made it but that's just the way they are. I have always heard that when you use cotton batting it is cooler to use in different seasons. If he's one that no matter what season it is he stays on the warm side try using flannel as the batting; make sure you wash it first so that if it wants to shrink it'll do it before it's quilted.

You should be very proud of your son for even asking what he should do. I also believe he was asking for your approval to let her have it...(The quilt) LOL...

vjengels 07-06-2011 06:41 AM

It would be in bad taste to request the quilt back... according to my mother; I ran into the same situation about 8 years ago..... let her keep it. As far a s a summer weight quilt goes, use flannel, make sure you wash & dry it several times to get all the shrinking out of it. That'll make a nice light quilt.

grayma 07-06-2011 07:43 AM

I would let her keep it. It was a gift and probably more for her than your son. Besides, if they would by chance get their problems resolved and get back together, this is one less issue for them (and you) to deal with.
