need suggestions for a new can opener
 

Many years ago I had an under counter can opener- then I bought the hand crank ones and loved them- but as I get older the hand ones are not doable anymore :( and have no clue where the under the counter one went - it just is gone :shock: Anyways I went to Walmart and bought a 5.00 electric can opener that was worse than the hand cranks - so my question is what can opener do you have and would you recommend it ? I have seen the portable ones that are smaller ( about 20.00) are they any good ?

Electric can openers stopped being the greatest of things years ago. The first ones that I bought I loved but later on they seemed to go dull and not open almost as fast as you opened them. I went to the hand operated ones that have the large handles on them. I've had mine for over 5yrs (way over) and when my daughter moved out she wanted it because it did such a great job. I gave it to her and got another one. The ones with the large handles are made from Oxo and Kitchen Aid and I'm sure others but these I know work great. I wouldn't buy another electric one for anything. I rather use the old punch ones before I got an electric one. Good luck on your search. If you haven't tried one with the large hand grips you might want to one they run under $10.

ELectric Can Opener
 

I have an OSTER electric can opener that I love! I don't have to grab or pull anything.
Once you start the opening process, it runs by itself and does not need to hold down the cutting device.
I quit using hand held can openers some years ago as I began to have problems with my hands.
I have owned and used the standard ones that have been on the market for years. But this Oster
is a really great can opener. I would buy another one - in a flash, if it quit working.

I have a ONE TOUCH - battery operated - a little bigger than a computer mouse. Set it on the can to be opened and press the button! LOVE IT!! Great for handicap - arthritis sufferers, etc etc.

Do a Google search first. I was having trouble with my 90 day old Black & Decker, then read the reviews. :thumbdown: No one else liked it either, so I tossed mine and have a hand crank for now. I would prefer an electric, however.

I have a wall mounted Swing-A-Way crank type can opener. Been using it for years. Never seems to get dull. You can find it in the Vermont Country Store Catalog online, at Amazon, at various hardware stores. Mine is mounted up high, which might be a problem if you have shoulder issues, but it could just as easily be mounted at counter top level or inside a lower cabinet door. No power? No problem.

I hate the sound of a can opener so I use one of the side open kind, I have one made by Pampered Chef, probably overpriced. But it is very easy to turn, and you can put the lid back on the can.

You should try to get one that opens the can from under the rim (I call them safety openers) because you don't cut your fingers on the sharp edges of the can top. Mine is Hamilton Beach. Good luck.

I too prefer a hand one...and it is a kitchen aid..6 years and still going strong!
