you seem to know 1. they arent from where English is spoken, and 2. you've heard them speak enough to seem to feel you can't even figure out what language they do speak.

As an American citizen you 1. seem to know all the local laws. They probably don't know any, or even know they should check for any

2. They may speak English as a second (or more) language(you really don't know yet), and speak their native language among themselves. 3. where they are from, they may have come to America under the false premise it is a country of freedom, when clearly it is a country legislated to bits. They may have come from some place where everything very restricted. 4. They may be afraid of speaking to the neighbors because its not that way where they are from, or they would not be welcome to speak.

3. you should try and speak to them to be: a good neighbor, a good local citizen, and just an all around good American. If they can tell you what they speak you can get online, go to google, type in all you want to say and hit the translate button from english to (whatever) and learn to say it or simply print it out and take it to them so they can read it in their native language.

and, before a I pulled the county down on them, I would simply ask why (if that is what they are doing because you haven't asked them directly - you've jumped to a conclusion by watching their property) they want to raise bees if there is nothing close by to pollinate (bees do need trees and flowering plants), and that your husband has a bad allergy to bees and could be harmed by them. Then, gently explain, due to people like your husband bees have not been allowed (housed - they fly around in nature after all) within the town/city limits by law.

and, while you're at it you might want to check the rules on raising chickens in town, cus many many places across the country are now allowing chickens be be raised in town - they may jump from bees to chickens - lol.

I live in a town, but I own 18 acres in the country. I house 7 stray (abandoned) dogs and 8 stray (abandoned)cats out there and am getting chickens and bees (my brother is tired of hand pollinating plums!) What with the bee colony collapse virus the bees are dying off at such a rate I'm suprised theres enough food (for people) to go around. Honey bees are a rather calm bee, they are not yellow jackets, wasps, carpenter bees or ground dwelling bumbles all which can cause nasty stings if bother even a little. I'm sure I could have bees in town if I wanted, but the fruit trees and big veggie garden and berries are all in the country. I had a very nice rooster in town and he finally wandered across the back road and was captured by a farmer. Since he wandered into my yard from where I didnt know I let him go to the farm (I think he came from a flock owned by an ag agent living across from me in town - his chicks were running the steets for awhile lol)

I don't bother the neighbors about what they do unless it is harmful, so the Christmas eves and New Years eves they are out shooting off (illegal) fireworks until 3 am is something I put up with, and the parking in my drive by people going to their yard sales. I did however escort a young boy home after he tried to shoot squirrels( from up in a tree he climbed by himself dragging this gun along, and then getting hung up in the tree and I thought for sure he was going to kill himself w/ the gun the way he was holding it and using it to pry out of the spot he was in) in my yard. I informed the parents that giving a 7 yo child a weapon (not a bb gun, a regular gun here) and letting him run the neighborhood with it was their irresponsibility; but the law read you cannot fire a gun within the town limits and not into anyones yard for any reason. Also, the next time it happened I was calling the police and going to the trouble of suing them and possibly having their child put with reponsible people. The gun went away in town at least, and I didnt have to involve the law.

mainly, just try and put yourself in some elses place. If you moved to, Brazil say, and everyone spoke Portugese, and you not a word, and you were a little afraid of trying to jump into local life w/ your neighbors. You knew they watched you, you could feel it, You thought they were talking about you.
so, to feel better, to think it was more like what you were used to you washed and hung some clothes out to get them sun fresh and next day a marked car pulls up and a guy in a suit gets out, and a translator and he tells you thru the translator you broke the law hanging clothes (or whatever it might be - bees even!)
really, how would you feel then! what would you think of the neighborhood, of the country that was now supposed to be your adopted home. Wouldnt it have been so much better for you to feel welcome and cared about if the Portugese neighbor tried to explain the local rules to you? Thats all I mean in all of this - we really should care about each other, we're all we got! as a species - sharet (and, I am not speaking for everyone who is thinking going to the county is not a great first option, just for me. Also, unless you're an American Indian, our families all came from somehwere else, all our parents, grands, or greats back had feelings of being out of place, and needed to know they were accepted. just my opinion, but I feel I could voice it cus you asked the "why" question-) :-)

You have misunderstood my "why" question, which hasn't really been answered yet. When I asked why everyone here has their panties in a wad about me going to the county, I meant, WHAT COULD THE COUNTY POSSIBLY DO TO THEM THAT IS SO BAD. It's not like they're going to be hauled off to jail, is it? Or seize the property? Remove their children from their home? Burn it down? It's becoming quite obvious to me I've had WAY less interactions with my local government than the rest of you. Quit dog piling on me. Is it not the code enforcement officer's JOB to inform citizens what they can and cannot do in a community, especially when they have people on staff who are paid to interpret?

Every county is different, but you can read the regulations for your city to find out the answers to your questions. Ours are on-line.

Just as an example of code enforcements: I know that for our weed control, the first ticket is $100, the 2nd ticket is $200, the 3rd ticket is $300. If the city comes in and takes care of the weeds, you also have to pay that bill, so if someone turns you in without speaking to you first, you can get pretty ticked off.

Wow. You posted something on a public forum where people customarily make comments. Just because you don't agree with someones reply does not mean that they are jumping all over you. Seems to me that you were just fishing for people to back up your proposed plan of action.

Hope you find out the boxes are for planting flowers or starting a raised garden. My neighbor has a pitbull, but both the neighbor and the dog are sweethearts. Lots of luck.

Beehives generally have an opening at the bottom to allow the workers in and out. Are you sure they are not filing cabinets and you are letting your fear guide your judgement?
Best thing would be to just make a friendly inquiry and let them know that hubby is allergic if they are hives.They may locate them in another spot after that. Most bee keepers transport their hives to locations that are close to a source of nectar, so they are often moving them around into regional areas.
