New Clothing vs Used Clothing
 

I sort of laugh when people say that they MUST wash clothing purchased at a garage/yard sale or a thrift store - but don't say anything about washing clothing purchased "new" in a store.

Think about how many times a garment has been handled -

first in the making of the fabric
then in laying it out to be cut
then who knows how many people worked on it
then when it is packed
then when it is unpacked
then when it is in the store
then when it is tried on - by how many people?

And finally in the customer's home.

Just saying -

Oh, I do! I went to purchase an upper body undergarment. Looked at one brought it to the clerks attention that there was a lot (and I mean a lot) of makeup in the cleavage area. She asked me if I wanted it and I said no. So she put it back on the rack. I used to work at that store and told her it needed to go back to damaged goods. She said someone would buy it. I always wash brand new clothes before wearing them. DH won't wear anything new without knowing for sure it had been washed. Always be aware of open packages of underpants and socks. Also undershirts.

It's very important to wash infant and children's new clothing before they wear it. I"m surprised at how many don't know to do this. I wash every quilt after I make it even if the fabric has been prewashed. Clean and fresh never hurts.

I've always laundered new clothing ... it's surprising how dirty the water is. I also launder anything that comes from thrift store or garage sale or wherever and will continue to do so until there is no more water. Just thinking about how long my ancestors wore clothing between washings makes my skin itch!

I always wash new clothes, of any kind. I wash any clothes that are used. I am known as a "scrubby dutch" Clean everything. I also wash every finished quilt.

I always wash everything... I hate trying on clothes before I purchase them. I try to wear as much underclothing as possible when I go shopping. Just don't know where the item has been.

Any clothing I buy from anywhere hits the washer first. One DD is allergic to sizing--------so now I wash!

we wear nothing around here that isn't washed first. and yes i agree i hate trying
clothes because you dont know who had it on first.

I'm not that concerned about germs from other people trying on clothes before me or even clothes pulled from the laundry basket before washed. (yes I've done that before, kids lived) It's the harsh chemicals on new fabric that is the problem.
