new to me phone scam

I am familiar with most scams, but this one is new to me and perhaps to some others out there. I received a robocall, a lady's voice saying that my Amazon account had been used to purchase an iPhone, using a device that was not my regular device. I was given a phone number to call. I knew immediately that it was a scam and did not call that phone number. I'm sure if I had called they would have tried to get me to give them information that would let them into my account. Beware - this call actually sounded legitimate, but it definitely wasn't.

thanks for the heads up!

They sure can find ways to keep us on our toes

lberna 11-02-2019 11:00 AM

I don’t answer any phone calls from people not in my contact list. If it is important, they can leave a voicemail.

Battle Axe 11-02-2019 12:01 PM

I don't answer those calls either. My new phone S-10 has a "Potential Spam" feature. If it says that you can forget it. Of course it is Medicare enrollment season and that is like open season on us oldsters.

This past week I had an Amish friend come and wash all my windows. She said that I had done so many favors for her that she would not take pay for the work. So I made a note when she said she had found this new coffee and she had become an coffee devotee. I have never had a cup of coffee, my drink is much worse: Dr. Pepper. So I got on line and found this Mountain Cabin coffee and ordered $60.00 worth. Immediately I got a phone call and an email asking if I still had that credit card in my possession. I have used it repeatedly to buy fabric, but never coffee. I've never started drinking that because it was supposed to be bad for you, then good for you and so I associated that with growing up. Besides that it is expensive. The Amish lady got a big kick out of my coffee order being watched by the credit card company.

dunster 11-02-2019 12:20 PM

Battle Axe, my drink of choice is also Dr Pepper. Or Dr Thunder, Walmart's version, which is identical but cheaper. Unfortunately I think it is as bad for me as coffee would be, maybe worse.

Jingle 11-02-2019 01:20 PM

I love two cups of coffee in the mornings. I just buy it at the store. I don't drink any kind of soda/pop.

I don't care if it is good or bad for me.

sandy l 11-03-2019 04:13 AM

Yeah, we got one of those other day too. Seems like we just figure out the scam, ignore it, and they come up with a new one.

luvstoquilt 11-03-2019 04:36 AM

I am with you Jingle. I can’t wait to get downstairs in the morning for my coffee! I used to drink seltzer but have even quit that. It is 2 cups of coffee in the morning and water all day. Sometimes I have a hot tea in the afternoon.

I don’t answer my phone unless it is someone I know. I will call back if I get a message. I have noticed lately the scammers are leaving messages basically as an annoyance. If you Google the number many times it describes the scam. What will they think of Nextel? My late mother was convinced she had won a lottery and she lost a lot of money. She was in her 90’s. There is a world full of uncaring people for sure.

Snooze2978 11-03-2019 04:53 AM

I only drink 1 cup of coffee a day or I get more tremors than usual in my hands. Sodas are out for me as they actually put me to sleep instead of give me the jeeters. As for credit card companies calling you when you order something online that isn't a usual product, I'm glad they keep an eye for us. I got a call when someone out in CA (I'm in IA) tried charging $5Gs for stocks to my card. On another card someone tried to order $1,800 worth of makeup at Sephora on it. Never use that card for Sephora and if I needed that much make-up its time to pack it in and give up.

juliasb 11-03-2019 05:27 AM

I have come to the point that I screen all calls if I do not recognize the phone number. If someone really wants me they will leave a message and I can call them back.

SusieQOH 11-03-2019 05:47 AM

What is it with the robocalls lately? They drive me nuts. They seem to come in waves but my phone often says Telemarketer or Spam call. Many others are from my area code though.
I could drink coffee all day long but I get too wired so I limit myself to 2 cups in the morning.

shasta5718 11-03-2019 06:46 AM

The best thing to do is actually call your company yourself and ask if they tried to contact you. If not it saves you and alerts them that a scammer is using them. Do not call the number they give you or go to a link if it's on the internet, use the one you have yourself or that is in the phone book.

Dunster, hope the fires are not getting close to you at Elsinore. I lived many years in Sun City and I'm still worried about neighbors there. Prayers for California.

willferg 11-03-2019 10:58 AM

I don't like but don't mind the calls I can ignore, but I've been getting tons of voicemails left on my cell phone for health insurance. The message ends with "have a blessed day," which doesn't seem like something a health insurance company would say in an advertising call...

Thanks for your concern. So far the fires have not affected me, other than occasionally a bit of a smoky smell and a haze over the valley. Last year one of the major fires was much closer, not close enough to endanger my home, but close enough that the employees at the Costco gas station where I shop were wearing masks, ash was falling all around, and we could see the flames just across the freeway. The fires are indeed scary, especially when they start up during the night and people awaken to find that they are in danger.

This is what I do also.

Thank you so much for letting us know. I get robo calls all the time and I usually don't even answer. Good for you in not calling that number.

QuiltnLady1 11-04-2019 03:26 PM

Thanks for the heads up. We get a lot of calls from "Verizon" saying our phone service had been discontinued and he had to send gift cards. I normally don't answer numbers unless they are in my address book but we are waiting for a call to schedule DH hip replacement surgery and they never use the same number twice so I am answering way too many scam calls these days.

ibex94 11-04-2019 03:50 PM

There is a system out there called "geofencing". If you have a smartphone and drive through the fence, you start getting robocalls from the company that set up the geofence. The only way I can figure out how to stop those robocalls is to turn off the phone as I drive.

Darcyshannon 11-08-2019 10:34 PM

Thanks for heads up. The scam message I remember the most was left while my phone rang while I was unloading Costco groceries in a deluge of rain and was getting ready to drive home. I am still getting my bearings in my new community. I get in the car, glad to be out of the pelting rain to hear an ominous voice tell me if I don’t call back now the police will be sent out to arrest me and lock me up. So many things were giveaways it was a scam but it was distressing and annoying.

The part that troubles me the most is that it is proven that as people get older they are more susceptible for a variety of reasons to scams. Obviously they get enough positive hits or they wouldn’t keep doing it.

SusieQOH 11-09-2019 05:27 AM

I got a weird call the other day from Australia. They left a voice mail so when I checked it the place changed to somewhere in Texas. And the voicemail was empty.

aashley333 11-19-2019 12:16 PM

My mom received a check from Publishers Clearinghouse, $7000+. Looked so legit that I took it to the bank teller.

It was fraudulent, and she told me that if it had been deposited, the accounts would be frozen.

If it's too good to be true...

Queenbarbiej 11-19-2019 01:03 PM

My favorite robocall is the one that shows up as my home number. I let the answer machine get it and it's one of those calls that said Microsoft on your computer is down loading a virus right now as we speak and I need to let the take over my computer.

Chasing Hawk 11-19-2019 01:08 PM

I got one from the Chinese Consulate yesterday. They said they were waiting for the documents I needed to sign to release the funds they were holding for me.

So far the people who say they owe me money, but haven't sent it:

Christopher Wray
Melania Trump
Bill Gates
Several FBI people
a few Nigerian Princes

If they would just pay me, I would be set for several lifetimes. :D:D:D
