On Valentine's Day, we added another furbaby to our family. Her name is Lacey Jane. She is a 9.5yr old Yellow Lab. She had belonged to my son's daycare provider and they needed to find her another home because they didn't have time to spend with her. She is a fabulous dog! She lets you know when she has to go out. First, she stares at you and then if you don't get the message she starts barking and "dancing" around. When she goes outside, she does her business and will bark to be let back in! She is 9yrs old, so she is very calm. She does not get on furniture, including the bed, and does not jump on people. She had no problem when introduced to the cats. That would have been the deal breaker. She also sleeps in her dog bed, if my son isn't laying in it first! The only bad thing is she is not fixed..which will soon be remedied! She is about to go into heat, so after this cycle, she goes to the vet! The only problem I am having is she won't eat her dog food. It is the same food she has always eaten. She has been to the vet and she is healthy. I can only get her to eat if I put a small bit of canned in with the kibble. I leave food down for her 24/7, but she still won't eat it. I'm not sure what the problem is....hopefully we figure it out soon. Anyways, here she is in all her glory!! I never really liked Labs, but she is turning me around!

Awh! She is a sweetie! Maybe she just needs to settle in a little more and then she will start eating normally. Enjoy.

That is so nice of your family to adopt her. I am sure she is just getting used to her new surroundings trying to figure out what is going on.

Our dog does not eat when he is not at home. Even when we use to leave him with my husbands parent, while on vacation. He is 14 we left him at a really nice kennel for the first time ever. She put gravy on his kibble and he ate all of it. Don't know if that might help, until he gets totally adjusted. It takes time, he will eventually eat, I am sure, but you might try the gravy idea.

She's a beauty. Hope she adjusts to her new home and starts eating.

She will be forever grateful to you giving her a new home. Be patient she will eat when ready. Just make sure she is drinking. She is still a little stressed and will take time to adjust. Patience is the key and lots of TLC. She will reward you immensly given the chance.

I've had several labs, and after they get over the hyper-puppy stage (at about the age of 9 LOL), there is no better dog on earth. They are sooooo loving!

Congratulations on your new furbaby and extra hugs for giving a deserving pet a good home.

The dog whisperer on TV reccommends that you feed your dog once in the morning and once in the evening. If you leave it out all the time you won't know how much the dog is eating. I feed my German shorthaired pointer a cup in the morning and a cup at night. My daughter has a pure bred lab and she feeds her 1 1/2" cups in the morning and in the evening. It depends on the size of the dog and the exercise they get.

One thing you can try is to put an egg on top of the food. I give mine an egg once in a while for a shiny coat. You might try putting some water on the food but make sure you take the food up at least an hour after if she doesn't eat it.

I am sure she will settle in soon. You should feed her the same time every day.

We have an older part lab--love this dog. She's as easy as you say this one is... never a problem--never in trouble. Shimano won't eat her dry food unless there's peanut butter on it.

Even though I currently have 2 much loved Collie muttleys, I still think Labs are one of the best family dogs! Your's looks like she is a total sweetheart!

Maybe she's dealing with the separation and loss, from her previous family, and so isn't wanting to eat much yet. I would guess with lots of love and attention, she'll be munching again soon. :)

She is beautiful, enjoy her!!!

You are amazing and deserve a high five, a high ten and then some. Thank you for giving this love bug a home. And not many that are not little cute tiny puppies get one once their owners can't care for them. What a lucky newbie! What a lucky family to get her!

tlrnhi 03-06-2010 06:29 PM

What a sweetie!!!

MissTreated 03-06-2010 06:32 PM

Oh, she's beautiful! How lucky you are!

Oh my, she is a beautiful dog. Give her a little time to adjust and I'm sure she will start eating again.

such a beautiful addition to the family!!! I love Golden Lab dogs!!!

Shemjo 03-06-2010 07:19 PM

She is a beautiful dog. Mine get wet food in the morning and dry out for them all day. I fill the bowl once a day, and it is shared by the big and little dog. Hope she gets back on her feed soon, so you won't worry.

QBeth 03-08-2010 09:42 AM

Labs are simply wonderful dogs! Hopefully, she'll adjust soon to her new home. Are you using the same bowls she had at her previous home? Using the same ones might be a comfort. Good luck. Don't give up!

How wonderful of you to give her a loving home. She looks very sweet.

We had the same problem with our dog several years ago . My son brought home a puppy , 2 yrs later he moves out and leaves the dog here with us . Well he wouldn't eat . I tried to hand feed him , nope would take it ! Had to call my son to come over and see him . This went on for about 2 months , I think Buster just missed him . Your dog is precious ! Have the previous owners come to visit ? I think sometimes this is a little depressing on dogs . They are used to seeing the "other family " then they are there anymore . Just a little TLC and it should get better . Good luck Annie

she is so cute, but she had a big change, give her time and lots of love. Penny

She's a beauty!! If you think she may be stressed, there is a fairly new product called "Rescue Remedy for Animals" by Bach remedies. You'll find it at most health food stores. You just put some drops in her water, it calms them. I've been using the Rescue Remedy for people, for many years. I even used it on my animals whenever I had to take them to the vet. My girlfriend just moved with three elderly cats in the car and after she had put some drops in their water before the road trip and they drank, they were very calm. I met someone who gives it to her horse. www.rescueremedy.com for more info

Thanks for all the comments!! Lacey is doing pretty well for the most part. I think she is felling better about things. Tonight my son came and tattled on Lacey. He was so upset because she was eating the cat's food! He's standing in the kitchen yelling..."Mommy!! Look what Lacey is doing! That's for the cats!! You're a dog!" I just had to laugh. I told him it was ok, at least she is eating something on her own. DH and I were talking about getting another lab since our neighborhood has all kinds except for chocolate. Our neighbors across from us and behind us both have yellow labs, and the neighbors behind us also have a black lab (supposedly he is a lab, but he looks more like a clydesdale horse to me! LOL. We figured now we just need a choc lab and we would be set. I didn't know there were white labs....don't think dh would go for 3 dogs though!! Saw a beautiful choc lab puppy but they wanted $350.00 for her. I don't think so. Hopefully this weekend I can get some better pics of her. It's going to be in the 40's, so we will be trying to find the least muddiest place to play.

Toto's Mom 03-10-2010 06:55 PM

Ohhh, Lacey is a doll! I am so glad she has found a good home with you. It may have just taken her a bit to feel like she was where she was going to stay.
My Toto eats the cats food, too, if nobody is looking, and they leave any. Lacey may have thought she was just visiting, and didn't want to be rude.
You said she hadn't been spayed, yet, and part of her lack of appetite may be partly attributable to hormones, combined with the changes in her life.
Give her a big old hug for me.
