New York City garment district
 

I will be in NYC this summer and wondered what to see in the garment district or where the most fun place to shop there would be. My travel companions aren't sewists so I won't be able to spend a lot of time but would love to see some of it.

I don't know where it is but Mood Fabrics is supposed to be fascinating. It's the place where the Project Runway contestants go to shop. Don't know about quilting fabrics but there is probably a lot to look at.

Mood fabrics popped up in my mind. Tell them that is where the contestants shop from the TV show Project Runway.

can I go with you? that has always been a dream of mine to go to the garment district. The only time I have been to NYC was an afternoon and walk hurriedly with my husband and his friend.

I know of only one fabric store for quilting. City Quilter.
Dotty (dotcomdtcm) shops there a lot, maybe you two can meet up there.
she says they even have a line of NYC quilting fabrics. Yellow cabs,NYC landmarks and fabs like that.

Don't know about the garment district, but my sister took a bus tour, and saw and early Singer building. Singer had its beginnings in New York, so I think it'd be interesting to find as many relevant places as I could.

I've been many times and it is fascinating. My favorites are Mood, spandex House and a trim shop that is close that I can't remember the of. There is also a museum that was pretty interesting. FIT (where PR films is across the street from Mood. It is a lot of fun and there are so many small shops with lace etc., everything for the Broadway shows costumes. Enjoy yourself, it is fascinating!

check out Paula Nadelsterns website. I know she goes there and lives in NY, I was thinking someplace she mentions where all she goes

I was in NYC in early Dec a few years ago. One of this board's members who lives there had said to get in touch with her if anyone was going to be there. I contacted her, and ended up spending the day with her and two other board members. We didn't know each other beforehand but felt like we had known each other for a long time. We went to a quilt shop in Soho, and The City Quilter. We also went to Mood in the garment district. Fabric is really expensive there, but it was fun to go and see these places. The City Quilter is a great quilt shop and it was fun to say I went to Mood. Hope you can go and you might could post something nearer to the time you will be there. Perhaps some board members who live there could meet up with you and take you around.

I have been to a couple shops with my daughter, but can't remember for the life of me the names. I saw a wonderful exhibit of quilts at the Folk Art Museum one year, and you may want to check their site to see what's currently on display. There are also quite a few quilts in the collection at the Brooklyn Art Museum. Have a wonderful trip!!

I lived in NYC all my life. We retired to Arizona 7 years ago for nice warm weather. My hubby worked in Manhattan his whole career. The Garment district is very busy and there are great shops to visit.

BUT, you must take care while walking the streets around there. It is not the safest area in the city. Be careful of your purse and only go during daylight hours. Take in a Broadway show during the evening!

I've ben to The city quilter a couple of times.. Nice shop.. There are a couple of trim shops, and button shops..

I'm heading to Ireland, and Paris in a couple of weeks, and hope to hit a couple of shops there.. I can't wait..

I visited both Mood and City Quilter in November. CQ does have New York specific fabrics - I purchased a kit to make a quilt for a friend that is next up on my "get it quilted" list. Mood didn't have traditional quilting cotton fabric and was very expensive. My one purchase, just to have something from the store, was a Swarofski crystal button.
