Niagara Falls Canada
 

To all my new best friends in Canada, need some advice. We are planning a trip to Niagara Falls this October. Just wondering what you think we should go farther into Canada to see or do. We have been to Niagara Falls twice before and we were thinking of going farther into Canada and check out other things. I want to go to Newfoundland but hubby thinks it's too far. We are in MD. He's also afraid I would bring home a puppy.lol We were also thinking of looking for a private cabin to rent. We go to a great cabin in VA but this is our 35 anniversary and we wanted something special this year. Thanks for all your help in advance.

We have SO much to do and see when you enter via Niagara Falls!
SO much that without knowing what you two are interested in, it is hard to make recommendations. Likewise without knowing how much time you are wanting to spend, how far are you willing to trek!

Here are some of the typical tourism websites that might help you start your planning. I didn't check each out as to their differences, though I suspect that they present much the same info, though perhaps in a different manner that might give you more on one site than the other.

If you are interested in wine/wineries, there are many in the Niagara area that you can tour or just stop by for a visit. Many have places to dine as well. Friends went on a guided bike tour last summer, going from one winery to the other and were quite impressed with their tour. Lots of options in the Falls area for accommodations, from traditional hotel stays of all levels to bed and breakfasts and quaint inns. I don't think you will find any cabins in this area of our province ... though there are lots, if you want to head further afield.

Kindred Spirits in St. Catharines and The Quilting Bee in Fonthill are definitely two quilty stops you will want to include!

If you are wanting to come further into Canada, around Lake Ontario and you are in Toronto, with oh so much more to explore. A big city ... so if you are looking for laid back and quiet, perhaps you are not interested.

Head the other direction from Niagara to follow the shores of Lake Erie for gentler, quieter areas and you'll not be disappointed. And we could send you to many other great spots within our province ... near and far!

At that time of the year, you will find many Fall Fairs, that can make for an interesting visit.


Some things to note ... following Labour Day, many of the tourism spots are either closed, or go to reduced hours, mostly weekends. Some will keep their regular hours til our Thanksgiving (mid-October). So if there are specific destinations that you are wanting, it is best to check into that before you come, in order to plan accordingly and not be disappointed.

Not to worry ... Niagara Falls flows 24/7/365 :D ... and is truly quite a site, no matter the day of the year. One of my favourites is in the fall, with the autumn colours ablaze. The other time is mid-winter, with the snow and ice effects ... again quite outstanding!

We have a great province to come and explore ... and it really does come to life with all the beautiful autumn colours.

Yes, I "do" Toronto, but certainly not a city girl.

More so ... fall is my time of the year ... the icky humidity is mostly gone, the colourful leaves are here, and just a great time to be out and about exploring. I live about 2 hrs from The Falls, so somewhat know the area.

And yes .... in one of my former lives, I have been a Tour Leader! :)

omgosh! i lived in niagara falls, ny when i was in 6th&7th grades (i'm 64) and as i was reading your post i saw fonthill! that's where i took riding lessons! i was a real horse freak! thanks for bringing to light some of my long put away memories. i am sure i will be smiling all day as more little memories of that time come back to me. have a wonderful trip! we used to eat fresh cherries all the way from fonthill to the border and never had to claim them because they would be totally eaten! 5# of cherries, 3 people, go ahead, you do the math, lol. took maybe 45 minutes for the trip,and less time for the cherries to disappear. have a happy trip, and then all y'all, have a happy day! oh, yes, later in life i spent 25yrs in texas. from western ny to western usa, but not directly.

we always try to do a comedy themed dinner theater..there are tons of them in Ontario..just google.
One of our best times, though, was at the King Henry VIII dinner theater. It was really wonderful!

Another fun one in Niagara is the Oh Canada Eh! dinner theatre ... a real good intro to flavours, songs and history Canada from coast to coast!

For anyone coming to Niagara, be sure to check the Niagara sites before you do, as there are often some very good discount coupons available online.

There is so much to see and do in Ontario!! October is about my favourite time of the year- the trees are in full colour and the summer heat is gone. I live about 1 1/2 hours from Niagara, in the Waterloo/ Kitchener area. October is time for Oktoberfest if that is something you like. Niagara, Niagara on the Lake, and the wineries and tours, is wonderful. Kitchener is home to a huge Amish/ Mennonite community, so there are many restaurants to recommend and some quilt shops too. Newfoundland, by the way, is a very long way from Niagara, but the dogs are adorable. You could check online for Tourism Ontario for ideas. Toronto is still home to me, we moved from Toronto 18 months ago to this small town. It is an enormous, international and multi-ethnic city with a major traffic congestion problem. There are word class restaurants and great theater opportunities. If you are so close, you must spend a few days there- check out the CN tower and dine at the top. Stay in a hotel downtown, use the subway system and take in all you can from this wonderful city. Can you tell that I love Toronto? My husband commutes to downtown every day. Sorry I guess you do need a little more info. We are very simple people and sorry quilter1, we aren't interested in city life. My husband likes to hunt and loves classic cars. We like the outdoors but not much on long hikes. We don't drink, so wineries are out. We went to Maine about 5 yrs ago and found out that Mt. Desert is "closed" after October and some after Labor Day.lol You want to talk about humidity? Come visit me this summer. I'm sure it's worse than yours. The Amish community looks interesting. We were in NF maybe 32 yrs ago when I was pregnant with our 1st child. We went in Feb to see the falls somewhat frozen. We hit a warm weekend and had colored fog instead of colored falls lol. Foggy all the way home about 15 hrs of driving. Should only take about 9. We were there a year or so before that in the summer and yes it was hot and humid around the falls. We also went to Niagara on the Lake and found a great fudge shop. I thank you all so much for your information. I haven't ordered a tourism book yet. i attended a conference in Niagara on the Lake 10 years ago. Loved the area, i'm a photographer/quilter so was entranced by the views. I went to Toronto, it is big, though i enjoyed the ethnic markets. My favorite activity was take a cruise on the St. Lawrence Seaway, that went through the 1000 islands, stopping at the one with the huge mansion that was being built for the financier's wife when she passed away. Name of the island fails me)Then i drove over the big bridge back into up state new york and drove to Boston. The field-stone houses are still some of my favorite.
