No more mess!!

I just spent the last 5 hours cleaning my sewing room good! Now I need to go to the thrift store next week to donate some things. Sure feels good to have a clean work space again.

Doggramma 03-23-2014 11:54 AM

I did that a few weeks back because someone from the gym wanted to see my sewing set-up. Yikes! Took me all weekend and filled up the vaccuum with dust/bunnies, and activated my asthma! But it sure felt good to have a clean organized space again.

when she got here she asked "did you spend all weekend cleaning?" ... she makes crafts for shows and it sounds like she has a big mess too!

SouthPStitches 03-23-2014 12:03 PM

Must be some of us are doing at least a mini spring cleaning of the sewing room. I spent an hour or so organizing, folding, putting away and generally tidying up. It does feel good!

Raggiemom 03-23-2014 12:58 PM

I cleaned my floor and table off last week but sadly I just put it on shelves and in drawers. At some point, I need to sort through everything :)

Tartan 03-23-2014 01:31 PM

Well done! It is time for Spring cleaning.

grannie cheechee 03-23-2014 01:56 PM

I'm going to try and clean mine tomorrow. Now that my DD is sewing in the same room it is more of a mess!!!!!!!!!!
I'm hoping to make more room for all my new stash.

Jan in VA 03-23-2014 02:05 PM

Mine needs cleaning desperately, too. But whenever I get that urge, I just go take a nap.:D

Onebyone 03-23-2014 02:36 PM

A few years ago when DD, a very minimalist person, was in my sewing room with me she said, mom if something happened to you, I don't want to sort through all this fabric and quilting things and it's really not fair to leave it like this for someone to have to. I know she is right and that has motivated me to organize and get rid of a lot of stored items. Not just in the sewing room but the whole house.

Boston1954 03-23-2014 02:43 PM

I did not really do cleaning as such, but I went through a bunch of fabric and ended up giving about 5 Walmart bags to my church quilting group so that they can make some quilts that they raffle. That feels good too. Maybe I will get in there and do some real cleaning.

GingerK 03-23-2014 03:15 PM

I did that last Nov. when I moved my sewing area to a different room. Took 3 days I swear and I was so very proud of myself when it was done. Lasted about a week. Sigh....

buslady 03-23-2014 03:27 PM

Been working on mine, too. Yes, it feels good, but would really feel good if it would just stay that way a little longer!

cathyvv 03-23-2014 03:31 PM

My kind of attitude!

cathyvv 03-23-2014 03:36 PM

Only 3 days? I've been measuring, folding, sorting fabric for over a month and am starting to see that there is an end to my stash!

I am also getting some donation bags ready to go to my guilds for charity quilts. It feels good to know what I have and what I don't want. It's also nice that I've reached the point where I can part with some fabrics that I now realize I'll never use.

Quiltaddict 03-23-2014 10:44 PM

Every time I clean up my sewing area I just start a new quilt and within an hour or so it looks like I never cleaned at all.

Me too,
but I am working on folding all my fabrics and getting them in some kind of order. I do that for awhile and then sew or cut for awhile. It's getting there.

QltrSue 03-24-2014 04:04 AM

Every time I go in my sewing room thinking I'll clean and reorganize, I want to sew instead, so don't get very far! But a few days ago, I had to make room for a new Babylock Tiara (lucky...and grateful...me!) so in doing that I have made a bigger mess than ever! I'm working on it every day, but WOW, whatta lotta work! Just want to learn my new machine and work on those pesky UFOs :) . Gotta keep going......

Quiltinjay 03-24-2014 04:16 AM

Good for you! I love my sewing room just after I've cleaned. Funny how fast it gets messy again.

just joan 03-24-2014 04:20 AM

Jan you made me laugh. That sounds like my way to clean.

Jackie Spencer 03-24-2014 05:53 AM

I have moved 4 times in the last 3 years. I have sorted through and gotten rid of things, some of which I really would have liked to keep, and I still have so much. It took me longer to pack up my sewing room than it did the kitchen!! I try to keep my sewing room organized, and always clean up after I finish a project. I don't work well in clutter, and like for everything to be in it's place. I do need to re-fold all my fabric ( I have wall to wall, and floor to ceiling shelves, on one 12 ft. wall) that will take me a while!

Jingle 03-24-2014 06:12 AM

My room isn't too bad. The 90 Foot countertop seems to get messy. Time for me to sort into my scrappy bins again.

I tell them it's their inheritance to remind them of the days and hours I spent cleaning up after them as they grew up..

That was my thoughts about leaving my 'stuff' behind. I have gotten a lot of bigger things out of the house but my sewing/quilting rooms need to free up more space. Trying to sort things to keep and fill boxes to 'move out'.

Bneighbor 03-24-2014 07:24 AM

I spent the last 3 weeks emptying out my room...completely. I have a painter here this morning, painting ceiling, walls and trim. I am drawing out a new layout to make the room more efficient. I am tired of hunting for something and not getting anything accomplished. After everything was removed, the contents filled 2 bedrooms!!! I decided that at least 1/4 had to go out of the house, and 1/4 should be sorted and reused, repurposed or removed. With almost half gone, I should be able to put a new layout together that gives me work zones...cutting, sewing, embroidery (plus a hooping area), storage, and a pressing area. My room is about the size of a 2-car garage. Hopefully the painter will be done by Thursday for Friday. I cannot wait to get started on my new "Creative Embellishment Studio". Sounds fancy!

Well, to me that sounds like she does not want anything of yours.......so to be "fair" if it were me, I would give it those who would want it now! I have the same situation here...so I am giving to " others" ........

Yesterday, I finished the cleaning, re-arranging, purging, tear my hair out phases of redesigning my workspace. It feels so good to have several items recycled to new homes. For once, I actually discovered that there were fewer works-in-progress than I had imagined! I think that was the greatest satisfaction experienced.

To celebrate this moment in my personal history I chose one WIP to do some sewing where I would see the most progress in the least amount of time. This was my reward as I had become discouraged while in the midst of the clean up.

Sew piecefully!

She has many of the quilts I've made. She is into scrapbooking and knitting. Her craft room could be a magazine picture on any day. It's so pretty. She uses all the quilts I give her but isn't interested in making one. She has knitted me beautiful sweaters as I'm not interested in knitting but love the sweaters. I know better about leaving an unorganized home. I had to clean and sort two of my older relatives homes and before I was done I was ready to just call someone and say take everything, just get it out. I was getting angry of the mess they left for me to deal with even though I loved them very much.

Jannie 03-24-2014 07:02 PM

I am in the middle of discarding and organizing also. We just had our hardwood floors refinished so everything had to be emptied out. Now to put everything back and decide what really doesn't need to go back in. It is surprising to see what has been stored -- for who knows how long. Hubby is doing the happy dance every time I say this box is going to charity or dump. A lot more would be going if I would let him have his way. Sure will be glad when it is all put back together.

My daughters said the same thing to me, so I spent THREE weeks (off & on) to, again, sift through my 8x8 sewing room that is floor to ceiling in bookshelves, drawer totes and an overly filled 4x4 pegboard (no fabric in here). I also sorted, and put into separate 3-ring binders, my purchased quilt patterns, magazine cutouts & computer print outs, embroidery designs, How-to's, paper piecing, doll patterns and etc. Whew. Also made up an MSExcel spreadsheet as I did it so that I don't waste an entire evening looking for something (it has almost 1100 items & a separate listing of books on this list). I even started to put Replacement Cost figures on the items and that was pretty scary in itself. The numerous listing of UFO's was also alarming. Need to get rid of things in the rest of the house, but have some pillows and quilts to finish and we know which will wait till later ---and gardening season is coming to interrupt the 'later'!!!

Onebyone 03-25-2014 02:26 PM

My grandmother's china set, my adult kids do not want it, my nieces did not want it, I am the one keeping it in the cabinet and we never use it. What do you do with stuff like that? It will be tossed if something happens to me so why am I hanging on to it? Just too much stuff that never gets used.

QUILTNMO 03-25-2014 05:29 PM

i did the same thing such a nice feeling!

Jannie 03-26-2014 09:41 PM

Why not use them for special occasions. None of my married children wanted china when they got married. They still do not have china and they are approaching the 30 year mark. My mom had dishes that dated back to the late 1800's. She has each grandchild's name on a dish. I will give each their assigned dish and will not ask what they do it. I think one will keep it & pass it down, one might not even get it home before it is tossed, and I'm not sure what the third one will do. This younger generation just doesn't seem to need to hang on to the past.

quiltingcandy 03-26-2014 09:59 PM

My mom's side of the family has a lot of family silver, furniture, etc that dated back to the 1600's on a couple of items. My grandmother and my mother gave most of it to the person that they wanted to give it to before they passed. I had the responsibility of doing a lot of sorting at my mom's house after she passed away. Basically told everyone that if they wanted something specific to say so, otherwise it would be sold or given away. We didn't have any arguments and that was nice. For my own children I have said the same thing. I am trying to clear out a lot of crap (I am 59) but they will deal with the rest of it because I want to enjoy what I have now and not worry about what they don't want to deal with when I am gone.

I do keep them informed what has some value and what does not. My youngest daughter loves the "family" items" but my other daughter doesn't care at all.

After all - when I am gone it won't matter.
