Non quilt ? about hemming tulle
 

Hi everyone, I apologize for a non quilting topic but I can't really find the right answer anywhere and I know how knowledgeable everyone here is so....I am altering a flower girl dress for my daughter and starting hemming tonight. The skirt is 3 layers, inside is satin and middle and outside are tulle. I did a rolled hem on the middle layer and am not happy with the result. I see others dresses online and it looks like the tulle is just cut. Is that normal?

The ones I have seen are just cut. THe only time I have hemmed tulle was along the edge of a veil. Not the easiest stuff to hem

You do not have to hem the tulle, I did alterations for years and it was always just cut straight.

If you don't have to hem it, don't. I did a rolled hem for some window scarves once that I made out of tulle. It was an absolute nightmare. I used binding clips to hold the hem in place while I sewed, but it was still quite difficult. Plus, I wanted to match the thread as much as possible, so I picked up a 100% rayon thread, which only made things more difficult. It did look cute when it was finished, but those were countless hours of my life I'll never get back. :P

Use a satin stitch then trim as close as you can to the satin stitch.

You can cut and it will be fine. Tulle doesn't ravel.

I shortened my daughter's wedding gown. I just cut the tulle layers.

I've rolled hems on silk to make scarves but tulle is just cut and left. Have fun!!

To do a rolled hem on tulle you have to use a stabilizer with it, a light weight tear away will work. It helps the thread hold on better. Do a search on you tube on it, I've seen a few videos plus at a serger convention they did it. But it doesn't fray so unless you just like that look, I wouldn't worry about it
