Nook HD+ ????
 

My kids gave a NOOK HD+ to me for Mother's Day.

I haven't done much reading lately - and don't have a Wi-Fi connection -

I haven't opened it yet - would I get their money's worth out of it?

I need to rephrase my question -

Do any of you have a NOOK - and if so - do you like i?

And if not, what do you dislike about it?

There is no way that any one else would know what I would/could do with it!

I have a Kindle instead of a Nook. I love it. Both are similar and easy to use. There are several websites you can subscribe to that will notify you of free books every day.

I think quilting books would be nice on it. There are many "apps" you can put on it. Everything from games to calendars, to calculators.

There are many, many things to do with a Nook other than tradition reading.

You don't have to have a wifi connection to download books. You can use a USB cord. It should be in your box.

I would like to suggest that if you think you will like reading on it, then you can probably find a free WiFi connection someplace and get lots of things to read and then when you want more, go back to another free WiFi place. I am thinking you wouldn't have to get to the free WiFi often, just when you wanted to load up your Nook.

As Lisa wanna b said---you don't need wi-fi for downloading books..you do that on your computer and transfer via the USB cable. But if I'm not mistaken, you can browse the internet w/ a wi-fi connection. So I see where you're coming from with your question. I have a reader (not a Nook) and it will also connect to internet via wi-fi--BUT it is not worth my trouble....slow to connect...drops connection...I just don't bother since I have iPad and pc. If you love to read tho, it will be great to carry with you. Hospitals have wi-fi, McDonalds & Pizza Hut do, many businesses do, so go ahead and learn how to connect and drop it in your purse when you'll be sitting in a waiting rm. You'll grow to love it!

DH got me a Nook, I didn't think I would like it better than a book, but I love it. I download books from the Barnes and Nobles website, lots of free ones on there. I carry it with me everywhere. I can get online with it and check email. You can also sign up at library sites, check your local one and can check out books.

I love my Nook Color! As I get older the print seems to get smaller and more bleary. But, with the Nook, I can easily enlarge the print. Also, I can read in the dark since it is bright (adjustable). This comes in handy when traveling since I suffer from insomnia and don't like disturbing DH. I can download books from our library onto my computer using Adobe Digital Editions (its a free app). Lots of library's have a digital section. My Nook is also an MP3 so I can listen to books also. Plus Netflix. Only problem is that I like a larger screen for movies and you really need headphones to hear it.

If you live close to a Barnes and Noble, you can take your Nook there for free WiFi. Barnes and Noble also have a lot of free books you can download.

You can also have pictures on it.

I can only vouch for the Nook Color. My oldest has a plain Nook - it's not back lit. He did that on purpose so the battery would last longer. His battery lasts several weeks. Mine only lasts a few hours.

I absolutely love my Nook - you can find many free books too - you definitely need a Wi-Fi connection to get your books - I am a big reader and if I read a book and looking for another - I have it right at my fingertips - I just hit the buy button and instantly I have a new book. Also, you can download samples of every book - gives you a taste of the book to see if its something you are really interested in. I have read many of the $2.99 or less books and free books - and they are great. Also, you can access the internet with your Nook also - and you can make the print larger if you have problems with small print. I guess you could say that I love my Nook - I never leave home without it.:thumbup:

I don't have a Nook but do have a Kindle Fire and I can go to my library and connect to their wifi and download books from them. I have always been a reader but the last few years had not read much. I'm sure making up for it now, last year I read over 60 books.

i have a kindle and i always have a book loaded on it to read. i really like mine.

I like the idea of going someplace that has free WiFi. Our library does, but so do places like Panera Bread. What a good excuse for an enjoyable lunch. One member of our reading group, has one just device, but she does not need Wi-Fi because she downloads whatever our next selection is right in someone's house during the meeting when the selection is announced.

do you have to pick Kindle or Nook? Are the books compatible? Is this going to be like VHS and Beta, where one technology is going to become obsolete?

I just got a Nook HD+ myself and I love it! I had had the original Nook and really like that this one is backlit and the colors are so vibrant. I also like that you can subscribe to magazines on it...might keep the paper clutter down in my house

I have a Nook Color and I use it daily. I read and play Scrabble on it. I just love it. I have an account set up at Barnes and Noble, and I can also take books out on loan from my local library. Wonderful invention!

I have the Nook 3g and the Nook color; love them both. Barnes and Noble have litterly thousands of free books. You can also get magazines, you buy the subscription on line at BnN and you pay only monthly, they are very cheap and you get the first 14 days for free and you can cancel anytime. There are lots of free apps plus low cost ones. You can save PDF docs on it and Office docs, etc. If you live close to a BnN you can go to free classes that will help you get more out of it and also read each day in the store for an hour, for free. You can connect either to your pc and download to your Nook or most all coffee shops, McDonalds, etc have free wireless. I don't know about all hospitals, but at ours you can't connect to the wireless with your Nook or Kindle or most Ipads. That is because on these devices you can't change you settings to auto connect and we have to keep our proxy settings on a separte part of our firewall (mandatory by law) so even though these devices can see the internet they can't connect. I went with the Nook because they allow you to get books, etc from more than just them. The first one I tried was a Sony and you had to buy only from them and they even cost more for the books. I took it back. Give it a try and see how you like it. There are even some FAQ on BnN that help solve alot of issues or questions. I love mine and I'd upgrade to the tablet if they made it to where I could change the settings and auto connect like my laptop can. The good thing is, if you live in an area that has fast foods and coffee shops, there is plenty of free wifi to get so even if I'm at work I can take my lunch break and download books. By the way, when my quiling/embroidery mags are ready to download, I also download a copy to my Nook.

Your battery will last lots longer on the Color if you turn the wifi off when you don't need to use it.

I also had a Sony to start with. Now it's a paperweight! Different formats were not compatible to the point that it would freeze up. Argh! My Nook can read PDF's, epubs and whatever format Barnes and Nobles is. Also I can listen to books using the MP3 in the Nook and also watch Movies on Netflix and check email. My brother also stores pictures of his family on his.

I keep the WiFi turned off unless I'm downloading books. The battery is my only complaint. But, the cord is a nice length so it's not too much of a problem to read while it's charging.

I have a Nook and love it. I have all my quilting magazines on it. It goes where I go. You will love it once you open it up and discover all you can do on it.

I received a Nook Tablet for Christmas. I like to read in bed & I like the Mocha screen best for that...you can change the background color of the screen & also the brightness & I don't have to fiddle with a reading light. I like that I can change the size of the print & can hold it with one hand...which is nice when my shoulder is bothering me. I plan to go to Barnes & Noble for a little tutoring so I can use it in the best ways...still haven't tried archiving or putting books on shelves. You can also download free books to Kindle on your computer & there is a program to recalibrate them so you can read them on your Nook. I do rely on my husband for recalibrating, but hope to learn how myself. My favorite sight for free books is inspiredreads.com (and signed up for a daily email for these books) I downloaded the free Kindle read to my computer & then if I want them on my Nook, I recalibrate...

I have 2 Kindles-One for games, email, web surfing-etc and one for reading. I older one's battery last longer as it is not using power for wifi or games. I love both of them and would be lost without them. I use to say I would always love paper books and still do buy some from my favourite authors to continue series-ie.JDRobb-But it is so much easier to have the kindle when traveling as it is lighter and packs more books and best of all, doesn't take up fabric space in the suitcase!!

If you can pay for a book you will. Eventually the free books will run out or you'll get to the bottom of the barrel. I have a kindle and read so much more than I used to, but I had to get past paying for a book. I'm the same way with apps on the iPad. I feel like EVERYTHING should be free. I download the sample, and just choose the books I really like. I'm sure your kids got it to help you into the 21st century like my family does! Embrace it!!

I have an IPad with the kindle program on it and love it .. I can read anywhere there is WiFi and I carry a WiFi with me if we are traveling. Its great ...

I am on my second Kindle.........first one was the keyboard and now the Fire. I get emails from BookBub every day. They usually offer 4 or 5 books....$.99. $1.99, $2.99 and always one FREE one. You can choose what category you prefer to read...mystery, thriller, romance, spiritual etc. Haven't "bought" anything in quite some time:thumbup:

I love my Nook HD, I upgraded from one of the original Nooks. I really like being able to adjust the text size and the back light enables me to read in bed without turning on a light. It turns out - the BEST thing about having an E-reader vs. a 'regular' book - I can put it on the shelf on the treadmill or eliptical and it makes the exercise time fly! If I only used it there it would be worth it!! I can make the brightness and print the size I need, no glasses, nothing to hold, just touch the screen to turn the page.

I prefer to do my book shopping and purchasing on my laptop and downloading the books to my Nook when I need a new book to read. You can also download the Nook application on to your laptop. I always down load the books on 'Free Book Friday' and they seem to have lots of specials where they have half priced books. I also try to avoid downloading books right after they are released. I have several on my wish list and the price on several of them have dropped since I added them to the list.

I just bought a Nook HD+ and I have had problems figuring out how to get the books from my computer to the device. If you go to Adobe.com and BN.com and put Nook HD+ in the search box, you will be able to find the information given on how to get the books on the reader. I have printed out all the instructions and would be glad to share them if you wish to e-mail me privately. Personally, I got the Nook because I can't find new homes for the paperbacks when I'm done with them and I'm filling up the basement with them LOL!.:D [email protected]
