Not A Quilt

I always enjoy learning something new. Through our guild, I was able to take a class by Judy Gauthier from Bungalow Quilting in Ripon, WI. (I highly recommend attending one of her classes if you have a chance) I am not affiliated with her in any way. She flew down to the valley to teach us her scrap user system and how to make an umbrella....I am so glad I signed up for this class! Here is a picture of my completed project.

Saw all the class umbrellas on facebook! Will look up her site! Looks like fun

How neat is that! I really like that umbrella and bet you had a good time at the event. Thanks for sharing.

Your umbrella looks great! Prettiest one I've ever seen.
|
Wow. Beautiful umbrella. No one will believe you made it yourself.
|
Really nifty!! Great idea! Beautiful!
|
Wow, that's gorgeous! I wouldn't want to use it though. I'd be afraid something would happen to it.

That’s beautiful. Do you use an old frame or are “blanks” available?

I love Ripon and have visited Bungalow Quilting...the shop is in a bungalow, at the bottom of the hill from the main street! Quite homey... We were in Ripon in early December, 2018. We had to deal with some snow and rain, but that was OK (We live in the SF Bay Area but were raised in Illinois, so we know about "real winter".)
Ripon is a delightful small town, set among rolling hills and farmland. Ripon College is also on a hill in town. There are some beautiful old Victorians near the college...tree-lined streets, enabling quiet walks among the neighborhoods and meeting friendly people. My nephew and his family have lived there for 5 years. He owns and operates the Knuth Brewing Company. Nearby Green Lake is a gorgeous place to spend a day or several, just enjoying the setting and activities on the lake. My first visit to the Green Lake / Ripon area was several years ago during January. Everything seemed like a typical Wisconsin winter with the all the snow and cold temps...causing the area lakes to freeze. As we were driving past one of the lakes, we saw folks enjoying ice fishing. That was the first time I'd seen ice fishing "live". I couldn't believe what I was seeing...little huts a hundred yards out on the ice and next to those were HUGE pick-up trucks / SUVs. Holy Cow!! Sort of reminded me of the movie "Grumpy Old Men" (Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau). If you find yourself in Central Wisconsin, make a stop at Bungalow Quilting and take a stroll through the neighborhood around Ripon College and downtown. It's a gorgeous little town...especially in the fall. BTW, the fabric on that umbrella is the same I used as backing for a table runner...it's currently on my table with a bouquet of flowers my cousin sent me for my birthday. Enjoy the rest of your day and take care. Happy quilting!! |
Love your umbrella!
Have never been to Ripon but have relatives who did live there, and are now in Oshkosh. Also have never been to Mission, and it's in my own state! |
Beautiful umbrella! Do you use specialty fabrics or is there a spray on product to make them waterproof?

Very nice. I also would like to know about materials used. I lived in Ripon during my junior high years. Looks like I was just down the street from where Bungalow Quilting is now. I still miss that town and all the fond memories

I agree that it is the prettiest umbrella I've ever seen.
|
How very pretty. I had questions so I found this supply list for making one from the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild & yes, you use whatever fabric you like & you waterproof it when it's completed. Also, you use an umbrella frame. Looks like fun & would be beautiful in batiks.

Your umbrella is beautiful.
|
Wow, didn't know an umbrella could be made, other than commercially. Great job
|
Gorgeous umbrella, love those colors.
|
During WWII, my mom made umbrellas for us and others. She had gotten some parachute silk from somewhere and used it. I was a little alarmed to see bloodstains on some of the fabric, though.

LIke Maxwell house coffee, good to the last drop. I am so bad.
Some steampunkers are making wonderful parasols. |

Cute umbrella. Here in PNW we don’t use umbrellas unless it is pouring.
|
Well, that's a new one on me! I didn't know you could make an umbrella. It's gorgeous, LilaKay!
