I keep seeing avatars with quilt inspectors who look awfully much like Maine Coones (or their close cousin, the Norwegian Forest Cat). If you've got one, please post a photo!

we believe this little rescue (Gryphon) has MC in him

Ditto with this little fuzz ball (Clio)

more recent of Gryphon; note hair from ears

I think Belle has some Maine Coon or Norwegian forest cat in her. She has the ear fur.

I just noticed her one white whisker shows up really good in this picture. She always looks funny for awhile when it falls out.

litacats 06-13-2011 06:58 PM

I can only boast of having Norwegian forest quilt inspectors. yours look more like the Norwegian to me as they don't have that really square solid nose and chin but that could be the cross ??? is in them. they do look good tho.
I love cats so much but I am having to give most of mine away as I have 40 and I have to reduce my work load so if anyone wants a british shorthair or Scottish fold free to good home let me know. you would have to pay airfare tho, LOL
just remembered the Nowegians have a funny habit of there tail curling up over the body and down one side like a sqirrels tail it looks so cute

sueisallaboutquilts 06-13-2011 06:58 PM

I had a Maine Coon named Fluffles. He was such a character and we loved him dearly!! Love all the kitty pics here :)

jillaine 06-13-2011 07:05 PM

Yeah, so far no true Maine Coones here (or NFC)-- mine are clearly only wannabe's; please post photos! ;-)

(I started this topic simply so I could see a bunch of photos of Maine Coones, especially as quilt inspectors.)

We had one for several years. My sister found her on her back steps when she wasn't any bigger than a mouse. She was sickly at first and spent her first few weeks lying on my chest as I sat in my recliner. Thought she wasn't going to live past kitten-hood. She was definitely a Momma's girl! She grew up to be a VERY big cat and she would often times jump on my chest in the morning to wake me up. It was like having CPR done by an elephant!
When she was about 15 yrs old she got hyperthyroidism and despite medication went down hill fast so I had to have her euthanized. I so loved my Flatus, she was one of my best quilting buddies.

Here's our KittyBee. We don't know anything about her bloodlines because someone abandoned her and her two sisters on the parking lot of a huge apartment complex in Irving, TX. They were 7 weeks old, and my daughter cared for them and found homes for them. The family member who had Bee gave her to us a couple of years later. She's now 9 years old and weighs about 18 pounds without being really fat. She's a sweetie who likes to curl up on my hubby's chest in the middle of the night and purr in his face.

NOW that is what I would call a main coon with such a lovely solid nose and chin and such big boning. he would look good on any showbench.

Thank you! She's our Bee-utiful Beestie, but she came by her looks entirely by chance. The mother cat gave birth on a balcony of one of the apartments, and the apartment dweller fed her, but eventually she disappeared. The kittens had been weaned, and the apartment manager took them in, but when her young son had an allergic reaction, she just shoved the kittens out the door. My daughter, who lived above the manager, asked her why the kitties were out, and it wound up that the manager allowed her to take them in long enough to find homes. My daughter already had 2 cats, which was the limit allowed - good thing, or she might have kept them all.

Love all your cats! I can't have one for various reasons, so have to enjoy everyone else's.

no they are British shorthairs I still have 3 of them. just as they were old enough to sell we got a bad batch of meat and they all got sick we had to treat them for 3 months to get rid of the bug that they had or it would have come back. then when they were well nobody wanted them as they were to old, now I am trying to give them away free to good home and still nobody wants them. they are so nice and such smooches I can't understand why they haven't gone to new homes.

Heres my girl...

jillaine 06-14-2011 04:59 AM

Oh yeah... kittybee definitely has some good coone genes in her... 18 pounds! Sweet!!! I've been hoping my Gryphon would grow to that size (without fat, of course), but it's not looking like he has enough MC in him. Right now, most of the MC genes are in his big fluffy tail! (And in his attitude)

jillaine 06-14-2011 05:00 AM

Riversong, that looks like my boy!!! Whats your's name? Looks like a kitten, too!

I love not only the tufts out of the ears, but between the "toes," too! sigh. I'm such a sucker for cats.

Her name is Cora...she given to us several years ago. I think she is about 15 now.

I have both a Maine Coon and a Norwegian Forest Cat. My wegie is a little boy, he only weighs about 10 lbs or so and is a sweetheart and a half. He is a retired showcat that I got at 1 year old.

The MC is typical MC, a real mischief maker. I am embarrassed to say he is grossly overweight because he is a real food hound and will eat just about anything, even the dogs food when he can get away with it (no wonder the dog hates him! ). He absolutely MUST lose weight. He is around 30lb! Waay too fat. His ideal weight would be around 21 lb or so. Here is his pic and I think he is even fatter now then when this was taken.

One FAT cat!!

I have NEVER heard of a 30-lb cat, feline fanatic!! Your vet must be furious. ;-)

That is ONE big belly he's got. But man, he's gorgeous. Is that your NFC in your avatar?

No, that is Finnigan the MC as a kitten bird watching.

Yes my vet is mad with me, I am mad with me. I did have him down to 21 lbs and we were doing so good then he started packing it back on. With 5 cats it is so hard to control. I keep the others food up on a table but he has figured out it is up there so my next game plan is to only do timed feedings and not leave the other's food out for him to snarf down the minute my back is turned. Another option is to build a feeding station like a dog house with a hole the others can easily get in and out but he won't be able to fit in. All my other cats are ideal weight but I don't want them to lose any either.

Ophelia is my Maine Coon quilt inspector. All four photos are same inspector - and notice she uses the same technique to inspect all quilts!

Awwwww. I would take them in a heartbeat if you lived closer :)

sewn3w 06-14-2011 08:12 AM

I had a Maine Coon that was mean as a witch to anyone that walked in the door. She would hunt down strangers and attack them. But she loved her family as deeply as she hated strangers. She was all attitude, in fact even tho her name was Duster, we called her KittyBitch. A 20+ pound cat can carry some serious attitude on her shoulders.
She hated flies. My 6'4" son would hold her upside down with her feet on the ceiling and she would eat flies. So I have kitty pawprints on my ceilings!!

lynnie 06-14-2011 08:27 AM

i had a beautiful kitty, Xanadu, he stepped on the rainbow on August 27, 2010. i now have a russianblue Zoey, shes a great inspecot too. your babies are so cute!!!!

sueisallaboutquilts 06-14-2011 11:37 AM

Renee765- your cat looks just like my Maggie May!!!!!!!!
But mine is a calico, her Mom was Persian and I don't know what her Daddy is :D
Keep the kitty pics coming everyone!! I love them all :)

sueisallaboutquilts 06-14-2011 11:39 AM

Actually your cat's face is a bit thinner than mine, but they sure do look alike!! Pretty girls :)

okiepastor 06-14-2011 11:43 AM

I SO want a Maine coon--have been waiting for the one we are meant to appear.....but I want a plydactyl one like we had when I was a child!

QuiltingNinaSue 06-14-2011 11:57 AM

It's a good sign that he's still able to jump with all that weight on him. I put Bee's weight control food on the bathroom vanity to make her work for it a little (and to keep it from the dogs), and the water bowl is in the bathtub because Pogo splashes it around all the time.

I wish more people would post pictures. I know I've seen an avatar on here with a cat that looks just like Bee, but I can't think whose it is.

sueisallaboutquilts 06-15-2011 08:06 AM

feline fanatic- your baby makes my big boy, Carmello, look tiny!!
His face looks just like my Maine Coon, Fluffles. Fluffles was husky but not nearly as big :)
Beautiful cat!!!!

Good grief, Feline Fanatic - your cat could double as a blanket!

Right now I have a handsome tuxedo cat, Pete, but before we found him, we adopted a longhaired cat that I thought might have some MC in her. She never grew very big, though.

Lucy was not a nice cat and hated to be brushed. We finally trained each other by using cat treats. If she resisted brushing, she didn't get her treats! Mean as she was, she endeared herself to me even though I bore a lot of scratches from her claws. Here she is, asking for her handout.

Janet

Buddy, can you spare a treat??

Here are my two. The little on is only 6 lbs and the big boy is 18. My DH swears the big guy has MC in him. then I showed him some of your cats. I keep threatening to get him a MC but he doesn't think so.

Thank you everyone for posting pictures of your darlings. I lost my constant companion, Purr-Zsa this last winter and miss her terribly. She wasn't a MC or a NFC, but she was a big Himalayan - about 16 pounds. I'm enclosing a picture of her just because.....Your post gave me a few tears as I miss her so much and lots of laughs. Thanks again.

kwhite, are they related to each other? They look alike except for the huge size difference.

Jo Mamma, Snowshoe could pass for my kitty's sister, but they were probably born a thousand miles apart! Bee's real sisters were solid gray and white.

A lot of our cats have cinnamon noses.

Quiltmaniac2010, I loved seeing the picture of your late, great Purr-Zsa, too.

kwhite 06-22-2011 04:06 AM

No Rose they are not. Boots was born under the shed and then abandoned by a bad mom who took everyone else but him, and Lola was an SPCA rescue after my old man (Siamese) was tormented to death by Boots (aka EVIL) right Amma?
