One of my favorite birds...

We feed birds, squirrels, chipmunks, and other wild animals in our back yard. We often have deer, groundhogs, and foxes. But I think my favorite is when a hawk appears. This one was eating from a suet feeder this morning. The picture is a little dark because it was early, but she is in the center of the photo.

We have bird feeders in our big cherry tree in the front yard. A couple years ago we had a hawk come into the tree. Unfortunately, it was not interested in the bird feeder, it was after the birds. It was about a month before the birds came back to the feeder. We never saw the hawk again.
You got a beautiful photo. |
We had one sitting on a fence post, looking around. I was just glad Cookie was not outside. I don't like them.

Jingle, our chi, Dabbie never goes outdoors without either being in his harness or being carried. I don't think a hawk would attack him that close to a human.

There were birds at my feeder right after she left. She has been here on several occasions and the other birds still return, I am pleased to say.

You are very lucky. We have a couple of kinds of hawks that come around here in Downeast Maine. HOWEVER, they eat the birds and chipmunks. I chase them as soon as I see them. They can find there dinner in the national park which our property borders. They don't need to be eating my "pets".
We also have a large number of deer that come onto the property each day. I put some grain out for them. They are so lovely! We did have 3 raccoons last year. One of them got inside the cage of our giant feeder and got stuck. We got him out safely and none of them have returned since. LOL. We have a beautiful red bellied sapsucker who comes every day. Here he is. |

I put food out for the birds also, and I don't care who comes to eat it - squirrels, raccoons, deer, etc. I like watching them all. Our hawk keeps down the field mice and small snake population so it's a good bird. There are enough woods and shrubs for most birds to easily take evasive action and avoid the hawk.

I like the hawks for keeping the squirrels and rabbits at bay. The birds don't seem to mind their occasional raids.

i get hawks all the time through my area. I get marsh, sharp shin and red shouldered hawks. Boy it is awesome to see them fly through the trees. I know they nest close by but have not found their nesting sites. Just a few days ago one immature red shoulder was trying to go after something it saw through the ice on the pond. What a show!
here is one that visits. I really need to get a zoom for my camera. |
I don't let my furbabies out unless I go with them. Two of them could be easy prey, while the other two aren't in much danger. I can hardly lift the little fatties!

One of my favorite things to look for here in Brooklyn are Quaker Parrots. The story is they were imported from Argentina in the sixties to be sold in pet stores. But they were accidentally set free at JFK airport. Everyone assumed they would not survive the northeast winter, so it was chalked up as a loss. But they adapted by nesting in the warm electric boxes at the top of poles. They have colonized much of Brooklyn including Brooklyn College and many parks. and add some happy color among the pigeons.

I had a Red Tail Hawk land in the tree right outside my sewing room window. I know he was hunting the quail at the back door.

We have hawks in our area too. I hate seeing them. They kill our chickens and I have seen them swoop down in our feeder and kill a Cardinal. I also have a small dog that I have to be very careful with when we go for walks. We have sunflower seeds out for the birds and have many varieties that are so interesting, but the hawk is their enemy and I wish they would stay in the field to catch mice and stay away from our feeders and chickens.

Love the quail and the quaker keets! I would love to see them both at my house!

I feed also all Birds, cardinals, chickedees, bluejay, Mr. Woody Woodpecker, Mourning Doves, but black birds and Hawk seem to me they're meant, they chase and bite other birds, but of course they have to eat too. it's nice of you to take picture. Birds are like human, there are good and bad.
