The young of most species of birds look like their mothers, initially.
The big increase you're seeing is because of a successful breeding season, with the young in their juvenile (female-like) colors.

Male hummers don't help with the children.

do you know the more feeders you put up the more birds you will get?

I did not know that. I have 3 on my back deck. I bring 2 in every night or they'll be empty in the morning. It's either the raccoons or the bear. I keep one stuck to the window high so they early ones can still get food before I get up.

I have 8quart feeders that have a large opening that you can get a big scrub brush in to clean them out good. I got them at walmart a couple of years ago for 5.00 I see the same ones other places for 20.00I also got the little plastic cups that go right about the feeder so the ants can't get to the feeder. I got those 4 years ago at walmart and never seen them since any place. I even looked on the internet. Before that my husband made some out of lids from hair spray, etc.

I have 4 that come to my feeder - 2 must be male - 1 has red on his neck - the other has green but not sure if it was his neck or back. I love watching them. They chase each other away from the feeder all the time.
