is it only me who thinks this way? my son is attending school in upsate new york, it is in the middle of no where. i spoke to him ealier today and he said he had gone to church but it took him forever to get back home. he said when you get behind a horse and buggy there is nothing you can do but drive slow. i thought he was kidding because it is so rural then i asked what he was talking about and he said he lives by belfast new york there is a big amish community there. my first response was are there any quilt shops? he didn't answer. LOL

lol yea I think that way. When I first found out we were moving to Ft. Campbell, KY I asked several people on the army wives board that I was a member on if there were any quilt shops around Hopkinsville because there is a fairly large Amish community there. No one knew!

Justwanna quilt - My DH was stationed at Ft Campbell when we were married 33 years ago. We were back about 4 years ago and were able to find the trailer we lived in, in a subdivision down 41A toward Clarksville. Was astonished at how much it had grown! Unfortunately, I wasn't into quilting at the time. :(
Since I started quilting again, my first question when i go anywhere is, "Hmmm, I wonder if there are any quilt shops in the area." In fact, I already found one that is actually on my way home from DS tomorrow. So Trupeach, you are definitely NOT the only one that thinks that way. :thumbup: |
No, I am constantly asking if there are any quilt shops to all kinds of people in all kinds of situations!

I am from near Holmes county Ohio. There is a serious Amish community there. They use back roads mostly. Fortunately for everyone, this helps the horses and the cars. Lots of shops ( ! ) The Amish community depends on the "English" as part of their economy. PS they do not pay into nor take out of Social Security. They take care of their own. Interesting books written about their lifestyle in today's world, written in novel form. The Quilter's Daughter, Daughters of Lancaster County Series #2 by Wanda Brunstetter. No, not only you ! Wash day is fun to see.. All the quilts and are out to hang dry on wash day.. What a beautiful sight !!! |

where is the bathroom? and then, yes, I am wondering, "so, where are the quilt shops?"...and do they have a bathroom :mrgreen: |
That is exactly what I would like to know. That and does he remember where they turned off. I have always wanted to visit an Amish community.

It's not just you! That was the first thought that ran through my mind :D :D We have friends that we just recently re-connected with. They live just outside Amish country in Indiana. I'll give you 3 guesses as to where I want to go on our next vacation - - and the first 2 don't count. :D :D :D :D

It's not just you! :mrgreen: I would kill for the opportunity to be able to go to an Amish community! :mrgreen: :mrgreen: We're planning a 4 month trip to Calif and Arizona this winter....I've already scoped out the quilt shops in the areas we'll be in.... :mrgreen:

I live near Belfast! Yes it is a huge Amish community. I like seeing the horse and buggies go by. I like to look at the horses. :D

If you go to shipshewanna - go to Lolly's and Yoder's.... take lots of money, and plan on lots of time.....
stop by the music store go to the Amish restaurant - get the butterscotch pie - trust me on this one - it's to die for... |
Oh boy sounds like a visit is in order when the weather gets better! We are moving in a week and the first thing I checked out was where is the closest fabric store. 1 hour away. Ok better than none at all. Thankfully we have the internet. I would gladly drive behind a slow buggy for the chance to see some handmade quilts..

fluffbug95 where are you? I'm also in Belfast. We buy some of our sheep and chicken feed from the Amish in Black Creek. His wife makes the best donuts!! There is a store on Rt 305 but I haven't been there. They bought the business from Jake and Sally when they moved to live with their daughter. I think they have fabric. I go to the store in Centerville to buy my bulk flour and spices.
The buggies generally pull on to the shoulder of the road. Since they have an SMV sign(slow moving vehicle - it was designed for farm equipment) on the back of the buggies, you can pass on a double line when safe. |
nope, I do that too.
When my hubby wants to go for a ride on the motorcycle he suggests going to find a quilt shop, he knows I'll go for that one!! Once when I was in a shop and he was with me the clerk, when she heard we had come on a bike, said that was cool and my hubby said that way I could only buy so much!!! All in all he is cool! |
They can be a little tricky to find... One of my favorites (here in the Finger Lakes of NY) was, until recently, Hoovers Shoes. Now they are Golden Lane. Still sell shoes, bonnets and socks!
They don't advertise, don't have websites, so can be a little known treasure. |
Forgot to mention - there was an accident up the road recently, involving a car and a buggy.
