It only took nine years.....

Nine years ago I bought a dining room set that I loved, but the upholstery on the seats was awful. (Some kind of heather look with brown, pink, and blue dots, made of polyester) to my eye, it made a very expensive Oak table and chairs look old and used. I searched for nine years to find just the right fabric to redo the seats. I wanted something to go with the burgundy and tan room decor. I looked everywhere. Imagine my surprise last month when I found the perfect fabric at St. Vinnies. Right colors, enough for job (3 yards, $6) and bonus, it is all cotton! I spent the day today with a friend and we redid all the chairs while I taught her how to do it. I did 3 1/2 chairs, she did 2 1/2 chairs, and I can't tell which ones are which, she did a great job! I finally have the dining set I wanted nine years ago. I am so happy today my cheeks hurt from smiling! Lol!
The first photo is the original fabric seats, next is the old and new together, then the new cotton fabric. I am in love with it now! Lighter color really "wakes up" the dark oak. (Please excuse the mess in the background, we are rearranging the house to accomodate DH's new walker.)

The lighter color is much cheerier!

Very nice! Now make sure to get some teflon spray and give each one a good spray to preserve the seat covers good looks!

Is teflon spray and scotchgard the same thing? I did not think of this, so thank you. You have saved my new chairs.

You did a wonderful job! I agree with you - the chairs are beautiful but were all wrong with the original upholstery material. Now they are perfect.

YAY! Good job...done!

Great job. I love the style of the chairs. Perfect fabric.

Nice job. I remember when I got my dining room set it came with white broque on the chairs. Not good if you have children and animals. Finally after so many years I decided to try my hand at recovering them, even added a cording too which was very new to me. Now that I see yours I want to redo mine agaiin as it no longer goes with the new dining room. Thinking of adding an embroidery design in the center but haven't decided which one so its still in the "thinking mode" for me. Again, great job and you must give yourself credit for being such a good teacher.

I agree, that old fabric was yucky! Of course, I personally hate nubby, prickly polyester upholstery fabrics anyway. But the new seat covers really make the look; and you did an amazing job on them!

They look very good. They are usually very easy to do!

dunster 06-03-2015 02:52 PM

Beautiful job, really makes the chairs look so nice. I have a small rocking sofa that needs to be recovered... wish I was still close by so you could help! :)

Material Witness 06-03-2015 04:23 PM

They look 100 percent better! Worth the wait!

Kim B 06-03-2015 06:42 PM

I love coupons (or a great deal) and it certainly sounds like you got one! I like that you're a "do it yourselfer" and transformed something nice into something amazing! It's a beautiful fabric and suits the chairs perfectly. I agree, protect those seats; so you can enjoy them for years! Awesome job, gals!

I have only ever done chair seats, but if I ever find a wing back chair, I do want to try and recover it. I will help you by email if you like. I do have a step by step book that shows how. I will go see what the title is so maybe you can get a copy. It shows how to make the pattern, and how to attach it.

The thing that amazed us was how the new fabric made the wood appear so much lighter and brighter!

nwm50 06-06-2015 04:03 AM

I can relate to you being excited finding the fabric you like and re-doing your chairs, it's so uplifting to yourself in doing this and feeling some pride! Wonderful fabric and great job!!

mjhaess 06-10-2015 07:19 AM

nice work..

tessagin 06-10-2015 07:25 AM

I've not seen Teflon spray but the Scotchgard works great. Just make sure you either cover the wood or wipe the wood off directly after. You did a great job and the new fabric looks great.

QUILTNMO 06-13-2015 04:37 PM

great job!!!
