Hi! Just wondering if any of you might also like to care for Orchids? My daughter gave me one for Mother's Day and I am learning how to care for it. Any tips/advice you can give would be wonderful.

I have several orchids...here is a tip...to water them..add 3 ice cubes to them once a week. Aren't they beautiful flowers!

I have several orchids, the cymbidium ones that grow outside, they bloom every year...the inside ones didn't have much luck with them blooming again....I have been told that less water is better than to much....the blooms last a long time....

Thank you for the tip! I have heard that laying an ice cube on it is one way of watering it.

Mine is a phalaenopsis and it is a inside plant. I have read these are the most popular ones and one of the easiest to grow. I bet yours are beautiful. Since I live in the mountains, I don't think I could grow them outside. :(

Ack. Don't do that. I have 2,000 orchids. Go to www.elkgroveorchids.net to see some of my pics. Ice cubes= good selling gimic because they die and have to be replaced! Think this through, do you see orchids in the tropics sitting with icecubes around their roots....NO.

I grew up with a neighbor who had a huge greenhouse full of orchids. They don't like cold drafts, don't over water, use the correct potting soils :wink:

and not too much light.

I just bought a plant with the large flat petals for my new greenhouse window, and it was not a good match for the orchid. I did love waking up and looking at it, but I relocated it to the dining room (which is shaded by trees) and bought other plants that like a LOT of sun for the greenhouse window.

The woman at the garden center also advised me to feed the plant once every 2 weeks.

You mean medium like bark. 99% of orchids will die if put in soil.
