This is Buzz, a retired racing greyhound. We picked him up Saturday so he's still adjusting to new surroundings. He's very laid back for a young grey. He's only 20 months old and weighs about 70 pounds. So far, there have been no encounters with the two cats. We haven't seen the cats since we brought him home. They've never seen a dog so I don't know when they will decide to venture out. I did see one of them streak by going to my sewing room/sun room yesterday but so far they've kept their distance. I guess they will come out sooner or later.

He isn't the same dog as my avatar. That's Lizzie. We lost her about 3 years ago.

Congratulations on your new member! My sister rescues greyhounds - they make wonderful family members.

Congratulations! He looks sweet.

Thanks quiltingcandy. Thanks to your sister for her efforts. I think Buzz is our 7th grey. I gave up fostering them. I had 5 at one time because I couldn't resist keeping them. The ones I had were mostly seniors and were about 9 years old when I got them. Most people don't seem to want the older dogs and I feel so sorry for them. They've usually been in a home before and circumstances (death, illness, etc.) caused the owner to return them. I wish more people would be willing to adopt the senior dogs. They make great pets.

He looks like a good dog. Not sure if your cats will accept him.

I love greys......always wanted one, but always ended up with some poor unloved Heinz 57.... Now living with 2weims and 3 cats.....who have accepted the gray "elephants" and they in turn have accepted those furry little things, but it take some time at both ends........

What beautiful, soulful eyes Buzz has. Hope he's very happy being loved at your house.

cashs_mom 03-21-2016 06:52 PM

Awww, welcome home, Buzz

DOTTYMO 03-21-2016 11:29 PM

I'm sure Buzz and the cats will soon be firm friends.

MaggieLou 03-22-2016 05:05 AM

i think the cats are finally beginning to venture out a little. I saw one streak by headed to my sewing/sun room yesterday and one was behind my DH's recliner last night. I'm not sure if it was the same cat both times. The one headed to the sewing room went by so fast I didn't get a good look at which one it was. They're both calicos.

Clarice29 03-22-2016 05:07 AM

Good for you. We just adopted a tiger cat that I don't think had ever been out door. He is learning slowly. I would like to have a dog again but we are too old to deal with one. Good Luck!

Roberta 03-22-2016 05:18 AM

Bless you for sharing your life with another Greyhound. They make great couch potato's and I hope the cats won't be a problem for a sighthound. I had a Grey, Jenny B, who lived in harmony with our cat as long as long as the cat didn't take off running, then the prey instinct kicked in but she didn't do that for long and they became fast friends.

MaggieLou 03-22-2016 05:51 AM

So far, the cat and Buzz haven't seen each other. I'm surprised he didn't see the one the ran into the sewing room yesterday. They say he is cat friendly so we'll see. He hasn't shown much interest in the squirrels outside but they aren't in the house. I'll put his muzzle on him when I leave so there won't be any way for him to bite them. I'm not sure who's faster - the cats or Buzz. It might be a toss up. At least the cats can hide under the furniture.

One of my best friends have adopted two retired racing greyhounds. They make lovely companions. They are very gentle giants. The cats will eventually come out.

rjwilder 03-22-2016 07:08 AM

I have a friend who adopted a retired greyhound, she has another dog and two cats. They all get along but it did take some time for the cats to adjust. They are indoor cats and they like to eat so they came out at feeding time and finally decided to show the greyhound who's the boss.

csknott 03-22-2016 07:40 AM

My dad raised greyhounds when we were growing up and I have a rescue. They are the sweetest and most laid back dogs. Just regular couch potatoes. And I have cats. And she could care less. Congratulations!

Kitsie 03-22-2016 12:12 PM

Welcome home, Buzz!!

Cybrarian 03-22-2016 06:16 PM

The cats will adjust, it just takes a little time, help him not to think the streaking animal he sees is a mechanical rabbit! Thanks for adopting him!

anniesews 03-23-2016 04:40 AM

Hope the kitties will like their new family member soon.

MaggieLou 03-23-2016 05:52 AM

I did see one of the cats last night. I caught her sitting on the couch staring at Buzz. They had a staring contest for a few minutes and Buzz decided to go see the kitty. He wasn't chasing after her just curious. Needless to say, the cat took off and hid. I guess at least one of the cats is getting braver. I put his muzzle on him if I think the cats will show themselves. I don't want to take chances. I also muzzle him when I go out. I don't think that will be necessary once they get used to each other.
