There seem to be a lot of members over 75 who are healthy and active. What are your secrets? Do you think it's your genes? Do you exercise and eat healthy? Do you drink alcohol or smoke? Will be fun to see what you think made the difference for you.

I can tell you about my Mom- she's 88 now.
All her life she walked- everywhere! She never drove and lives in an area where you can walk just about anywhere.
She was a very health-conscious cook- long before it was the thing to do. She bought as many fresh foods as possible and this was when you could not get things all the time like now.
Never smoked or drank.
She still lives this way!! I'm so proud of her for honoring her body (and ours when we were kids) as she has.
She's always been a worry wart but I think all her walks have let off a lot of steam over the years.
Her sister, my dear Aunt is 5 years younger and can hardly move- she's very heavy, eats a lot, used to smoke, and just led a very sedentary life. But she's such a doll. Makes me sad to see her this way.

MY Mom in law is 88 and walks 2 miles and rides her bike everyday. She keeps her own house and goes everywhere with us or my sis in law. Although she is gets tired more easily she takes her naps and takes care of herself by eating well. Her mood is upbeat and she says all of us keep her that way!!

I read a book (I think it was called the Blue Zone) about centenarians. It seemed they had a few things in common such as pretty strenuous physical labor/exercise all of their lives, a very healthy natural diet (mostly grown in their own yards - no pesticides, etc.), and daily stress relieving experiences. One woman lived in the hills (sorry cant remember where - not USA) and took care of livestock, garden, etc. ... when asked what she did for fun she stated that she took care of her cows. Others were sheepherders who walked the hillsides all day (no city life, etc.). An interesting book.
Another good book was called Second Wind... about athletes who continue to pursue athletics into their "golden" years. And while they continue their activities they do have injuries (some requiring surgery) ... they simply continue the activity after recovering ...

My Mom is 83. She walks about 2 miles a day. There is a shopping center not to far from her house. She travels, watches what she eats, doesn't smoke, she drinks beer........lol
She sews, reads does hand embroidery work and she gardens.

Her 3 sisters are all gone now. Aunt Joe drank like a fish and smoked. She died 3 yrs ago, her heart just gave out. Aunt Chris died from the disease Alzheimer's about 10 yrs ago. And Aunt Georgie died of Cirrhosis of the liver about 16 yrs ago.

My Mom just passed in April at age 94. She won top honors in ballroom dancing around the country for 5 straight years starting when she was 83. She made all of her beautiful gowns and her partners shirts, ties, etc. She had a huge garden and had a trim body until she passed. She belonged to many societies, and associations and served as President on many. She was up by 6am and in bed by 10pm. I just miss her so much. Its no fun being the matriarch of a family.
