I am confused as to the difference is between these Machines.
Is there somewhere I can see the difference in the stitches? Thanks to anyone who can unconfuse me. dollclothes |
I think you might want to visit a dealer who handles sergers to see for yourself the differences. The overlock and serger machines ar essentially the same. I think it is just different terminology. And the coverlock is (at least on mine) a double needle top stitch function that does not use the knife. But your best bet is to have a dealer show you.

Oh no I was hoping someone had the answer  I will be watching a dealer is 40 miles away.

Thank you for such a prompt reply. When I hem knit tops I use a wide double needle on my regular sewing machine. This top stitches two lines on top and a zig zag on the inside which encases the hem. I guess this is something like a cover stitch.

An overlock & serger basically do the same...they sew the type of stitch you see on t-shirt or knit fabric seams. They have a cutter that trims off the edge of the fabric as you sew.
Serger stitches: http://sewing.about.com/od/sewingmac...rger-Stitches/ A coverstich is basically for doing the hems on t-shirts or knit fabrics. It lays down a single/double or triple straight stich on top, depending on how many needles the machine takes & does a sort of overlock on the underside. It generally has no cutter. Coverstitch stitches: http://www.berninausa.com/webautor-d...itchbasics.pdf Some machines are combo machines that do serger stitches & coverstitches. There are various brands of machines available. I have a Bernina Serger & a Babylock Coverstitch. I chose the Babylock for the options. If you consider buying either machine research your options. Some machines are very limited, while others may have several options, I.E. 1/2/3 needles, accessories/feet, etc, for doing different things. |
Thank you! The sites you provided explained things for me. Now to get some extra cash. Do you think if I put my husband's false teeth under my pillow tonight the tooth fairy will leave me enough cash for a new machine?
