Package from Canada to the US
Just sent a package to the US by mail. I was told that the minimum
declared value should be $100. Any of you on the US side receive any package lately at this value? Did you have to pay duty? |
Yes, you pay duty. Why would they tell you the minimum declared value should be $100? It is what it is. And if they are going to recommend you lie, then lie the other direction and say it is worth $5.00 and your receiver will pay less duty.

I have sent a few packages to Canada. The value was under $100. They all arrived safely. There is a lot of paperwork on this side of the border.

perhaps they meant minimum insured value for protection , I had a pkg come from Canada to the US with no problems

It was sent expedited. There's a tracking no. but I don't think there's any insurance.
The person working at the P.O. said even if your package is worth $1.00 you still have to declare it for $100. That's the minimum charge. This is nuts. I wonder if it's going to be the same thing the other direction. |

the PO may have meant the minimum insurance they will cover is for a value of a $100, But all pkg going to canada need a customs declaration form-CN22. Known as PS form 2976. See Below:
https://about.usps.com/forms/ps2976.pdf On this form you must declare the value of whats inside. (there is no minimum/maximum). But customs will calculate duty on it. Duty/tax is calculated by what it is (You have to know the HS Tariff number) and the country of Origin and if it has a tariff exemption (NOEE). I ship to canada every week, and no package goes without a customs form. (This form -the short form, is for a flat envelopes, There is a longer form for pkgs/boxes). |
The form says there is a maximum....$400.00 (that just means there is another form to use when the value is greater than $400.) So I was wrong about the no maximum value.....sorry about that.

Go to a post office, if you didn't. Don't trust the people at Shopper's or the other little postal outlets. They just don't have the training or seem to take the time.
