Do you have medical insurance for your pet? If so, which company do you use?

By the time I'd heard about pet insurance, Jake was too old at age 8 for me to purchase it...but I'm looking to get coverage for Chip, Jake's son. I figure it would probably be worth it, considering that the vet I was taking Jake to, even tho they were incompetent fools, charged me over $1000.00 this past year...much more expensive than my own doctor (and they didn't even begin to touch on what was really wrong with him!)

Anyway...what company do you use, and has it been worth it?

i have never had it, but wished i had a few times. i would talk to your vet or the person who handles the billing, and ask them, after all, they will be the ones giving you the discount..

Right now, we don't have a vet...I wouldn't take any kind of vermin to the idiots that I trusted with Jake...we might still have him had I made a better choice in vet clinics... and I'd like to have the insurance in place before I take Chip in...especially if it pays a percentage of the office visits...

We don't have pet insurance. I have never looked into it to know if it's worth it or not. I would be leery that it wouldn't cover everything needed. My Ruby Darlin' will be nine years old in October and we have spent so much money on her at the vet and specialists that we call her 'The Million Dollar Baby'.

My son and his wife have it for their 3 dogs through the local Pet Smart store which has a vet clinic inside. The insurance pays for periodic checkups and immunizations, and either full or partial spaying/neutering, but I don't know what else it covers. I do know it does not cover the surgery the one dog needs to correct cherry eye (both eyes). The surgery costs $1500 and the kids don't have that kind of money, so the poor dog will eventually be blind. However, she knows the house so well and gets around so well that no one would ever know that her eyesight is as poor as it is. She still plays with the other 2 dogs and acts as normal as can be.

The amount of coverage you get probably depends on how much premium you pay, just like any other health insurance. You will just have to check it out with different vet offices and clinics. Good luck!

My son and daughter in law have VPI pet insurance and they use theirs all the time for the annual check ups and any unexpected illnesses or injuries. I have it as well but haven't had to use it so far. They are really good about paying the claims too.

Insurance, ideally is for something that is not likely to occur, but when it does occur, it costs a lot of money. Think of life insurance, your car being totalled, your house burning to the ground.
When you buy insurance to cover smaller, routine expenses, you are just swapping dollars. Think about it, the insurance company is not going to give you anything as a gift - they are in business to make money.

call some vet offices around you and see what they take. it's expensive is all i can say. i have 3 cats and don't have insurance.
