Pet owner alert

I just saw a report on a new virus similar to the circovirus effecting dogs. They don't know how it us spread so far and they don't know if it will effect other pets either. Cases in San Diego last year and now in Ohio and Ann Arbor, Michigan. Symptoms are abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, vomiting and lethargy.

Is it lethal? Do the dogs survive?

DogHouseMom 10-03-2013 08:44 AM

Yes, my bad ... I've known about the virus for quite some time as my dog show friends have been reporting it for weeks now. Forgive me for thinking it would be useful to have posted it here.

Deb ... it can be fatal in older dogs, very young dogs, and dogs with compromised immunity. In healthy dogs it is still serious.

Oh no, thank you for the info!

DebraK 10-03-2013 11:59 AM

thanks. My dog is due for some shots. I'll make sure to ask my Vet for any information he has about this.

Thanks for the alert! Have to take care of our pets.

There was a doggy day care the next town over that had it spread to about 4 or 5 dogs. Three of them passed away. So very sad.

Just heard about this. I`m just over the river from mi in Canada. I just had 9 yr old Beagle to the vets with severe diareah but no vomiting. He`s on antibiotics. Slow going but seems to be getting better. Will keep a close eye. Thanks Gale

How odd that you posted this. I was talking with a friend in Florence SC this morning and he told me he lost one of his white Schnauzers last week to this virus. He had to have the dog put down. I will be careful with my four dogs. I have two of this guys Schnauzers I got two and four years ago.

Ohmygoodness: these are the same symptoms our avatar had when we got her, we took her into the vet right away. Thanks for the alert, hopefully its not something that they can get again ...

My Chihuahua does not go around other dogs.

Oh my, another virus in dogs. I'm actually glad we don't show our dogs anymore.

We take in rescue dogs. Thanks for letting us know about this. How long has this been going around. We lost our little white chihuahua on April 29th of this year. The vet diagnosed him with acute pancreatitis (sp?). He did have the bloody diarrhea but no vomiting. Will check with the vet.

I remember back in the 80's the dogs had the same symptoms, and we finally figured out it was Parvovirus. They did get a vaccine for it eventually. Hopefully they will with this one too.
gosh that was nasty stuff
