Just got off the computer, went into my kitchen and looked at the smooth top on my range. It is white and everything I cook leave a black spot. Because of pinched nerve in my neck I don't have much strength in my arms so I never get everything off. I thought this would be so easy to clean. I have tried everything at the stores. I give all my pots and pans extra scrubs, nothing makes it any easier. If you have a white smooth top cook range and have found an easy way to clean it, please let me know. I would be forever grateful

Mr. Clean "Magic Erasers" works on things amazingly!

BKinCO 04-06-2010 06:50 AM

I have a white smooth top too and hate it for the very same reason. No matter how I clean my pots and pans there always are black smudges. WHO decided that a white stove top is a good idea??? I'll be watching for ideas on how to get it clean......

thimblebug6000 04-06-2010 07:19 AM

I have the smooth black one and it shows the marks just as bad. I just use the stove top cleaner that's made for it, but you could spend hours standing there & still not get every little spot off, especially if you happen to let the potatoes boil over!

amandasgramma 04-06-2010 07:24 AM

have you tried LA Awesome??? It's at the Dollar stores - for $1.00 or so. It's strong! I used it full strength on my mother's stovetop, and let it set for a minute, then it wiped right up. I use it on EVERYTHING -- including clothes! Has gotten rid of spots that nothing else would lift off.

I have the gray smooth cooktop. It's a Maytag, bought at Sears. I will never buy another Maytag or anything from Sears again. I was assured the top would not have black marks, rings or discloration that would be permanent from cooking no matter what pot was used. . Ha, black marks appeared and are permanent. Maytag said the marks did not effect the workings of the stove so wouldn't honor the warranty, Sears wouldn't honor the in store warranty because it was cosmetic. The sales person even denied saying I would never have to worry about black marks. We have since bought all new appliances even washer and dryer and never set foot in a Sears store or never gave Maytag products a glance. I tell my warranty story when I see anyone looking at Maytag products.

Soft scrub works great I use that to get the gook off the top of the stove. I prefer the glass top over anything else either way, face it were going to have to clean up the messes.

Thanks, I have tried the magic Erasers. I use them on almost everything but they won't take the black marks off.

I agree!

Thanks for your suggestions. I will try the Dollar Store product and see if it works in conjunction with my 15 year old grandson who is 6'5" and is strong as an ox.

Sure wish I had read these comments before I bought this thing 2 years ago!

HIBISCUS 04-06-2010 08:12 AM

the only marks I cant get off is from an aluminum teakettle that boiled dry and was on the stove for a long time with high heat.
I use the ceramic cleaner they sell in Home Depot, or softscrub, or sometimes baking soda, and everything comes off pretty easy except for the teakettle ring!

I also have a smooth black stove top and if I had it to do over again I would have gotten white. Every little water spot of piece of lint shows up! You can only imagine what bacon splatters do to it. The magic eraser seems to be the best.

I have the black smooth top. More work to clean that thing then the old type of stove tops! My husband ALWAYS over sprays the frying pans and then that cooks on to the surface. Geez. He also picked out the cream colored kitchen sink when we remodeled - I wanted to stay with STAINLESS steel! He doesn't scrub the coffee stains after he pours out coffee. I guess this is a a 'venting.'

The last time I cleaned the stove top I used Bartender's Friend - the cleaner that doesn't scratch. I think that did as good as job as the cleaner they gave me when we got the stove.

bearisgray 04-06-2010 09:59 AM

I was wondering how those tops would be for cleaning.

Because I still can, I bought the electric range with the "old-fashioned" burners and was thinking I was missing out on something good.

Quilter7x 04-06-2010 10:02 AM

We use a razor blade to get stuck on stuff off our glass top. Maybe that would work for you too. Then we use the cleaner meant for glass tops because it puts a protective layer on the glass top to make it so that the next spills are not supposed to stick as hard.

jacee kay 04-06-2010 10:10 AM

I am so glad to see this discussed. I want to buy a new stove with two ovens. The only top is the smooth top. If I spent 1500 on a stove and I hate it I will be sick. I may rethink and just keep the electric stove I have it works good.

BellaBoo 04-06-2010 10:39 AM

Getting the burned on stuff is easy, most any cleaner or scrapper will work on that. What I was livid about was the permanent marks made on the burner ring it self. These marks are burned into to the top. I was assured it would not happen with the new Maytag ceramic smooth top like the older glass tops. My mistake was not getting that in writing. Maytag just said sorry but so what. Sears said it's paid for, we don't care.

I have a GE Profile glass stove top and love it(black). I use a cleaner called Sidol, by Henkel (Miele). My DH buys it at an appliance store. It works well and for a final shine I spay Pledge on it. I know that sounds crazy but many have asked how I keep the stove top so clean.

QuiltingGrannie 04-06-2010 01:56 PM

Bartenders Friend! Works good on a lot of things that you need to clean even counter tops with stains on them. I agree the smooth top stoves take more elbow grease to clean and you have to be careful what pots and such you use. I had one for a while, but not have the old stand by.

MadQuilter 04-06-2010 02:35 PM

I have a GE white cooktop and love it. Yes, I have to put some elbowgrease into cleaning at times, but a scrubby and the white liquid cleaner made for cooktops does the trick.

One other thing to consider for anyont planning to buy one: what kind of pots and pans do you have. A cooktop requires flat bottom pots. Mine are stainless and work great. One of my pans is an enamel over cast iron and its bottom isn't flat. I still use it but it does have some hoit spots AND I have to be careful. Heavy pots should not be dragged or banged on the top.

watterstide 04-06-2010 02:44 PM

my son has the black top..i hate it..it never cleans up nice. i will be going to stay with them in 2 weeks..

i do love thier washing machine..front loaded, uses less water and less detergent!

i have the old fashioned electric stove top..i think i will keep her..

saf45 04-06-2010 03:43 PM

i use only mr clean majic pads love them

blahel 04-06-2010 03:56 PM

i know this sounds strange.. but baby oil seems to take away a lot of marks that I have had to scrub and scrub on my oven and hotplates. it does take a little bit more rubbing on burnt on marks. It is wonderful for stainless steel too and I just put a couple of drops onto some paper towel and wipe and wow no marks just a wonderful shine and no fingerprints..it is my new best friend in the kitchen!!

jacee kay - my stove does have two ovens. The top oven is smaller and sometimes called a pizza oven. Under that is a regular size convection oven. Now I do like having the two ovens. Why heat up the big oven for something for the two of us? I knew I was going to miss that oven drawer to put my cookie sheets and stuff like that in, so I had the cabinet maker put a unit under the kitchen sink that holds my cookie sheets and trays. One the best parts of the remodel!!

I have used a razor blade also, makes sugary things come off a lot easier.

Mine is black and is only a year old, but it is still as smooth as the day it was bought. (Maybe I don't cook as much as the rest of you guys!) I use Cerama-brite a couple of times a week. A blade to scrape off the stuff that doesn't yield to the Cerama-brite and then I use a Vileda Scrunge made for ceramic stove tops... that little cutie is magic!

My husband thinks the stove is a lot of work but I love it. I seriously HATED trying to clean out those pots under the burners after a boil-over!!

soniboo 04-06-2010 05:20 PM

I love my glass top and would never go back to the burner type. Mine is ten years old and the top is a small black and whitish grey mix design. Having the mixed color probably is a big plus and it definitely doesn't look it's age.

We use the Cerama Brite that came with it and also the Cerama scraper when needed. I just went to check it and DH was in the kitchen and even he thinks it looks good.

craftybear 04-06-2010 11:27 PM

Wow, did you get your stove clean yet?

pollyjvan9 04-18-2010 06:02 PM

No, but I did have my grandson scrub on it yesterday and he got most of the black spots off. Most of the problem is my strength. Just don't have the muscle anymore to scrub hard enough. I have tried almost all the products that were suggested except the Dollar Store product. I will get some next week.

Thanks for asking.
