I used the pillowcase for the bottom of the dress and made a bodice and sleeves out of compatible fabric - it turned out cute!

I made twenty of these for charity. I gathered ten different calicos, cut the dress length needed, then cut 5 inches off the bottom. Then I mixed up the "bands" created by cutting off the 5 inches. Then reattached the different colored bands on the bottom of the dresses. I bound the arm holes and folded over the top to make a casing. Then I purchase grosgrain ribbon and tied the ribbon into a bow at the shoulder. On some of them, I took left over calico and put a pocket on the front of the dress. It was fun, it wasn't inexpensive to do...but worth the effort.
There are lots of patterns out there, Zieman has into on her site.

I started a charity " Knox Frox " at our Knox Presbyterian Church . IN these 2 yrs we made approx 500 dresses but also includes shorts for boys. because I sewed clothing before quilting I made the patterns.
Took a pillowcase and cut out the 2 armholes ---because we recycle we used the cutouts as pockets for others.
Naturally had to cut off the seamline at end of case. All very easy. Some striped cases I turn sideways and cut a size 4 pant . We make size 4 and 8 then pay luggage cost for our missionaries to deliver . We do well with donations .
Interesting when we skyped and saw children in our clothes. Good luck with your project. You can pm me if you want any other info.

I make the dresses for Little Dresses For Africa & if you go to their website you can get the pattern and I think there is a link to go to Nancy Zieman's site. Her instructions have how to use yardage for the dresses. I have lots of fun with them & add lace, pockets, etc.
Made my granddaughters some but for the ties made a sash that threaded through and they were beautiful- found that on Pinterest
