Pinterest - Important information.
I wonder how many of you post pictures of your work to pinterest, or even post pictures you have found on the internet on your board at this site?
Did you, like me just click when you had to agree to the contract and terms when you started using it? I just happened to read this today http://rettspace.blogspot.co.uk/2012...pinterest.html and it shocked and alarmed me. I have taken down my boards too. |
I've always been a little skeptical of Pinterest -- I figured that for whatever they were offering me for free, they were getting much more in return, probably things I'd never be aware of, much like Facebook.
|
So I'm lazy and don't want to read the entire agreement...lol! What does it say in a nutshell? :)
|
Hmm, maybe I won't join that site after all!

One thing to remember (out of many): The internet is still a wild, unregulated place. Even after all of these years. ANYONE that has a blog, is on a forum and posts pictures, comments on a post and offers suggestions, etc can have their work, words, ideas, stolen. It just doesn't happen on Pinterest. How many people that have blogs where they show their work ever check other sites to see if it is being reproduced? As a blog owner would you know if a company right now was using a picture of some of your work to promote their own company? Most likely not unless you happen to get lucky and someone that you know reports it to you. Do I agree with the idea that Pinterest will hold an everyday user liable for their legal fees if they do something illegal and are sued? Of course not. I do think that people who want to use Pinterest should understand what it is and follow the rules to the best of their abilities. I personally do not put my own work onto Pinterest. If I pin something and I have ideas about how I want to change it or do it differently I do not make a note of them in the description box. I keep that private. Pinterest is a tool that can be used or misused just like any other. But everyone should try to understand what Pinterest is and every other new thing that comes out and respond accordingly. |
I'm not taking any chances, I deleted all my boards and then deleted my account ...
|
I could never figure out the point of Pinterest so I never joined.
|
Thanks For the Info!

Interesting....thanks for sharing that information!

I'm not going to panic and take down my boards. I love using Pinterest and will continue to do so.
|
I'm always very leery of joining anything, surprised I joined this board! Never did facebook and never will!
|
Reminds me of a quilt contest by a place in the U.K. You designed your quilt, made the quilt, and sent in photos with a $25 entry fee. If you won, you got a sewing machine or some such - not really valuable, but bragging rights on winning the contest. THEY got all rights to your design.

I visited the site once and found it overwhelming. This is the only place I really feel comfortable posting and sharing.

I'm reading everything these days
I never put anything on any social media these days without thinking seriously about it first. Yesterday saw an article in the Washington Post that employers are now "asking" job candidates to either give them their facebook info and login, or having them log-in on that company's computer so they can retrieve the information and look at that person's facebook page. If the job candidate says no, they are not considered for the job. I think so many things have gone way too far and so many of us just give away all of our life history, ideas, and personal and financial information and people are taking advantage of our trust in others. I'm certainly more careful than I used to be, but nowhere as much as I should be. I trust too easily and am trying to be better with social media where you have no idea who some of these people are.
|
thanks for the heads up! I was halfway to joining that site. I didn't like the idea that they wanted my password for my facebook account. So I stopped the process.

I'm slow to try stuff on the internet. I'd heard about Pinterest and it sounded interesting. But I've still not figured out how to really use my laptop so I'm not on Facebook. Maybe that's a good thing. I'm glad you alerted us to reading fine print. I confess I give it a quick scan but I don't go over it as closely as I should. Thanks.

I love pinterest, but I can see where there could be problems ahead. I've just read a few of the concerns--one that was written in Huffington Post by an attorney who outlined similar concerns as was listed in this post. How though, is pinterest any different from this board or others or social media where we post pictures of our quilts allowing or even encouraging others to to copy designs. As a writer and photographer, I understand copyright infringement, and have always wondered about all things on the internet. However, I see the internet as a public domain--if we want to keep our work private, why put it 'out there?' This was an excellent thoughtful post. Certainly, this is something to think about. I have no plans of discontinuing my pinterest use because frankly, I love it.
|
I don't know anything about pinterest.
|
What's the big deal? All pins are linked right back to the original site it was pinned from. Isn't that the point of posting pictures to a public website or blog to get as many readers as possible? The Pinterest agreement is a rule. Not a law. Huffington Post leaves out a lot of important details to get everyone all riled up. Makes the news we should be paying attention to be overlooked on the back page. I've seen so many very intelligent people get steered right in the direction they are led with blinders.
|
Anything I post on the internet, whether on Pinterest or the QB, is free for anyone to use. If they use it illegally and someone wants to take me to court, I would not hire an attorney --- I don't have any money for that....and they would be hard put to find anything of value I have (maybe my longarm). If they want my house --- well, it's value is HALF of what I owe on it, so maybe that would be a good idea.....................:( I like Pinterest, I've gotten a lot out of it, I'm not going to worry.

I was glad to read this...I have been thinking about a pinterest site. It always makes me nervous when they want access to your contacts, etc. I suppose facebook is the same. I've heard that once you post something on facebook, it's no longer yours. I've thought many times about deleting my account but if you look at that, it states that what has already been posted will remain. So I'm just careful...don't put many pictures on there and am very careful with personal and family info. Too bad this has to happen. It could be a great thing, but it costs you your privacy.
|
thank You!!! I was just thinking of signing up!!!
|
I would just like to pop in here to say that just because YOU don't care if YOUR images are posted on Pinterest, you should still be aware that ANYTHING that YOU pin &/or RE-pin, without the express permission of the owner of the image, leaves you wide open for a lawsuit.

All sites have this agreement. No one pays any attention to it. Like anything else, you either like or you don't.

i enjoy pinterest and i dont do a lot of pinning or repin but enjoy looking at all the crafts on thee , i will continue to do this
|
I didn't sign up at Pinterest using any social networking login. No contacts from my Facebook or Google + account was accessed. You have to read the options when signing up. I signed up with a free gmail email account made just for Pinterest, all made up info. Pinterest can access all that they want. No emails come to that address except Pinterest emails. I never sign up for any online subscriptions using my personal email. I use throw away emails addresses.

I noticed this evening when I went to Pinterest that they have new Terms of Service to be effective 4/6/12 that will address people's concerns.
Here's a link to the info: http://blog.pinterest.com/post/19799...-updated-terms I'm going to keep my boards. |
I'm keeping my boards, too. I like Pinterest and it is fun to see what my friends and family are pinning. I've seen some awesome quilts pinned and gotten some great ideas from Pinterest. I'm glad they're changing their terms, although I did read them but didn't take them to mean they would actually sell things. Perhaps now others who were reluctant will sign up and enjoy it as much as I do.

I wonder how many of you post pictures of your work to pinterest, or even post pictures you have found on the internet on your board at this site?
Did you, like me just click when you had to agree to the contract and terms when you started using it? I sure did and was very concerned after reading your post this morning. I've been thinking all day long about deactivating my account with them. Then, tonight, on Facebook, they had a fresh post about most of your concerns. Pinterest was telling everyone they have changed their terms of service. They said they never had any intention of selling anyone's ideas. They claim they just adopted another social network's info without really considering what it all meant. They have changed all the parts people were growing concerned about. Hope this sets your mind at ease. |
I just received an email from pinterest today and they are re-writing their contract and eliminating the selling portion.
Updated Terms of Service Over the last few weeks, we've been working on an update to our Terms. When we first launched Pinterest, we used a standard set of Terms. We think that the updated Terms of Service, Acceptable Use Policy, and Privacy Policy are easier to understand and better reflect the direction our company is headed in the future. We'd encourage you to read these changes in their entirety, but we thought there were a few changes worth noting. • Our original Terms stated that by posting content to Pinterest you grant Pinterest the right for to sell your content. Selling content was never our intention and we removed this from our updated Terms. • We updated our Acceptable Use Policy and we will not allow pins that explicitly encourage self-harm or self-abuse. • We released simpler tools for anyone to report alleged copyright or trademark infringements. • Finally, we added language that will pave the way for new features such as a Pinterest API and Private Pinboards. We think these changes are important and we encourage you to review the new documents here. These terms will go into effect for all users on April 6, 2012. Like everything at Pinterest, these updates are a work in progress that we will continue to improve upon. We're working hard to make Pinterest the best place for you to find inspiration from people who share your interest. We've gotten a lot of help from our community as we've crafted these Terms. Thanks! Ben & the Pinterest Team |

Instead of bookmarking an image I pin it. Much easier. If you don't want the image you posted online pinned, disable the ability. Pinterest has the easy directions to disable pinning on their website.
|
I didn't find any info. There is a disclaimer stating that the blog doesn't exist. So what is the scoop?
