pinterest

Hi there!

What exactly is pinterest?
What's it's objective? How do you use it?
Those that are members, what do you post there?
I have been hearing a lot about it and I have gone to the website but it's still a bit confusing to me.

Thanks.

lauriejo 09-24-2012 04:23 AM

Well I use it as an online bulletin board. When I see something online that I like I "pin" a link to a board on my page. Then I don't have to print it out or try to remember it. When you go to the home page and aren't signed it you will see the most popular pins. When you are signed in you will see things pinned by people you follow. Like I have a friend who makes jewelry and I follow her so when she pins something it will show up on that front page for me. If you choose to follow people who like things you like somtimes they find stuff you wouldn't have seen on your own. I don't usually repin, I try to follow the link back to the original post and pin from that. Does that make sense.

Ditto. Plus I use it to "pin" my own QB pictures so I can easily view them all at once and go to the details with a single click. I often refer back to my own work when I'm trying to select quilting motifs for new projects.

It is kind of like the "bookmark" feature here on the QB - but you can store ideas, recipes, cool pictures, anything that you want to look at again - you set up an account there and then start to "pin it" on anything that catches you fancy and put it on your account. You can then have "boards" on your account - the same as here on the QB. I am just starting on Pinterest and have these different boards - QUILTS - PICTURES - PEACOCK PICTURES - RECIPES. i am branching out a bit and can now follow other people who collect pictures/ideas for quilts.

Wendy, Nikki and lauriejo:
Thanks soooo much.

I really need something like this.
I used to print quilt pics from QB and other places but it used a lot of paper and ink.
Then I started keeping just the website addresses in a folder but that's also inconvenient as I'm not always sure what's at the site without going back to the address.

Do I need to be a member of Twitter or FB to join Pinterest? I am not a member of either of those sites.

Just bear in mind that what you save is duly noted and tracked by the company as well as by others. If you are okay with that, then enjoy it for all its worth, but personally, I'd rather keep my bookmarks and folders and save things to my own hard drive.

I'm kind of fanatical about my privacy on Facebook, too, so I'm just that way...

logcabinfran 09-24-2012 06:48 AM

What I like about it is the QUILTS. Thousands literally, one lady had 11,000 quilts pinned, another lady had over 4,000 quilts plus tutorials.

Michael_r 09-24-2012 07:11 AM

I really love Pinterest lately. I use it mostly to pin various pictures I love (mostly beautiful stuff).

@logcabinfran I love that too!

I second this....hence you won't find me posting anything on Facebook. And I back up my files and folders on the computer with a flash drive. We also set up an external drive and store pictures files and folders there. And the important stuff. Which is all backed up on discs and separate flash drives, labeled for future use.

have no idea. haven't looked into it myself.

Dolphyngyrl 09-25-2012 08:19 PM

You just pin things you are interested in, they have recipes you might like to try, quilts you might like to make, crafts projects that interest you. Its kind of like the bookmark feature here but for everything not just quilting

Hey I've got one of those kind of sons too!

I have recently discovered Pinterest, and am "hooked" on it.I save hints, recipes, craft etc that I will probably never make.It is lots of fun though.

kalady 09-26-2012 01:43 PM

the reason I love it is that unlike bookmarks you can access it from any computer anywhere and I can send a link to others to see what I am talking about. You do not have to go through facebook or twitter - if you did I would be so outa there.

Pam H 09-26-2012 01:56 PM

One thing that has not been mentioned is that you need to be invited in order to join. That's no big deal if you know someone who is on it. If you don't know anyone, you can pm me your name and email address and I will invite you.
I am doing some remodeling and pinterest has been a great place to keep the pictures of all the things I like and might want to use. For instance, when I was looking for a back splash for my kitchen I would comb the internet for ones that I like and then pin them so that I could find them later. Now I am doing the same thing for my master bath. You can have as many categories and you want and it really makes it easy to find what you need at the time you need it. It is out there for everyone to see so you would not want to put anything personal or private on it.

jeanharville 09-27-2012 09:06 AM

Although you do have to be invited, they have a button or tab where you can request to be invited. That's what I did. It took a couple of days, but they accepted my request and I became a member. I haven't used it much because until this thread, I really did understand how to use it. So thanks for asking your question.

iwillquilt 09-27-2012 09:52 AM

If you find something you like you have to click on the picture to take you to the site. You may have to click again on the next box. I forget. I have to get off here and go to work or I would check it for you. Maybe someone else has a better memory than me and more time. I love to go there and look.

jeanharville 09-27-2012 07:01 PM

I have another question regarding Pintrest. After reading this thread I decided I would test pinning the tute from a poster here on QB about tracing the coloring book to use as a quilting pattern. It pinned to my board just fine. But then I got an e-mail that someone else had repinned it. So my question is will this kind of distribution cause grief to our members? I won't be pinning any photos from here if it does.

lauriejo 09-28-2012 04:23 AM

Well anything that is posted on QB is pretty much public already. If you do a google search posts from this board frequently show up.

jeanharville 09-28-2012 04:06 PM

You're right, Lauriejo. I didn't think about that.

lauriejo 09-29-2012 12:27 PM

Sometimes I think we all forget that this is a public forum. We feel like we are "chatting" with friends and kind of forget the world can peek in.

GreatStarter 09-29-2012 04:34 PM

I use it to save pictures and links to things I hope to make someday. Plus I am new to gluten free eating and I can pin recipes I hope to try. Others who have to eat gluten free can see my pins and pin them if they wish to their board. I have found some really great ideas due to pinterest.

amandasgramma 09-29-2012 04:58 PM

WARNING!!!!Pinterest is ADDICTING and the recipes will cause you to gain weight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)
